A College of the Church

We’re a Lutheran college. (Our name gives it away). What does that mean?

As a Lutheran college, we are focused on helping you discern your sense of purpose and discover how you can use your talents to serve your neighbor, community, and the larger world.

You don’t have to be Lutheran, Christian, or of any particular religious tradition to be an essential part of our campus community. We welcome all and learn from all.

Rooted and Open

Luther College is deeply rooted in the Lutheran intellectual tradition and boldly open to insights from other religious and secular traditions. We intentionally pursue conversation about big questions from the full array of religious and secular academic traditions. In so doing, we shape character, invite vocational discernment and build religious literacy.

Gifts of the Lutheran Tradition

Grounded in Grace: The Lutheran emphasis on the expansive grace of God leads us to encounter our world and our neighbors with hospitality and generosity of spirit. Interfaith cooperation, rigorous academic inquiry, and ongoing work in diversity, equity, and inclusion flow freely from this core value of grace.

Intersection of Faith and Learning: Martin Luther, namesake of our college and denomination, was a pastor and a professor. Following his example, Lutherans have historically placed high value on education. Faith and learning are not adversaries. Heart and head work together to understand the world and our place in it.

Living with Purpose: In the Lutheran tradition, we talk about vocation–the many ways we can live life serving God and others. Whatever your interests, gifts, or fields of study, we believe that you bring your mind, body, and spirit to these endeavors. In doing so, you are able to find deep meaning and purpose in all that you do, and to embody your core convictions for the sake of the world around you.

Growing in Faith: Faith and spirituality are lifelong journeys. The Lutheran tradition embraces paradox, encourages exploration, and leaves room for questions and doubts. We are liberated to be honest and curious in our engagement of sacred texts and academic pursuits alike.

Committed to Justice: God’s grace liberates us from the powers of sin, death, and evil. This freedom compels us to seek liberation for our neighbors, serving them and advocating for their needs. We seek the common good, discern moral vision, and address social and cultural injustices. God calls us into the world for the sake of the world.

Always Reforming: Martin Luther sought to reform the church so that it more closely and honestly reflected God’s love and grace. In this spirit, the Lutheran tradition encourages us to be responsive, creative, and compassionate as we engage with our ever-changing world. We embrace newness and celebrate the ongoing, active work of God’s Spirit.
