What Do Students Say About the Benefits of Studying Away?

When Luther students study off campus, they tell us that they:

  • Gain a better understanding of and respect for diversity
  • Develop an appreciation for their own culture
  • Increase their analytical abilities and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Examine their personal values
  • Develop greater self-confidence

Most importantly, students increase their awareness of the interconnected nature of the world. The world is truly our classroom.

Flexible Options

Luther makes it easy for students in all majors to study abroad because of the varied course options. For those who can’t take a semester or a year away, there are short-term study away and abroad experiences led by Luther faculty during January Term.

Environmental Communication in Belize

Janet Borchardt ’24 took this group selfie on top of a Mayan temple at Lamanai during the J-Term course Communication Studies 239: Environmental Communication in Belize. What struck her most deeply about the trip, she says, is “the passion and pride Belizians have for their country and the environment. We saw time and time again just how willing many citizens were to go out of their way and make personal sacrifices to protect and restore their environment, which is what makes the country so special and beautiful.”
