The four-week sessions are held Wednesdays from 9 a.m.–noon in the Loyalty Hall Board Room on the Luther College campus.

Registration takes place on a first come, first served basis. Classes are limited to 30 participants.

The cost per seminar is $50 per person. Participants may register for one seminar or all four at the same time. Those who sign up as a couple will be accepted together. Need to cancel? Let us know two weeks prior to each seminar for a refund (less $5 administration fee).

Jim Martin-Schramm, Emeritus Professor of Religion

Description

This four-session study explores the life and thought of the Lutheran theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was executed by the Nazis for his participation in a conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler.  This course explores several key questions:

  • How does such a privileged young man risk his life and reputation for the welfare of others?
  • Why did he take so seriously Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, including Jesus’ injunction to love one’s enemies?
  • How does Bonhoeffer get drawn into the conspiracy and what role does he play?
  • What does Bonhoeffer mean by “Religionless Christianity” and what other key insights emerge during his incarceration
  • To what extent is Dietrich Bonhoeffer a model for Christian discipleship today?

Description

Since the mid-20th Century, the term “micro-historian” has characterized a group of historians who focus their studies on small events.  The individual or a small group experiencing such an event is the raw material of their research.  This short course will consider three aspects of micro-history.  First is a quick sketch of professional micro-history.  Next, we will explore topics of personal interest to class members.  Finally, we will discuss vehicles one might use to present your examples of micro-history to an audience beyond yourself.
