Class of 1949 Spring 2018 Letter

Spring 2018

Dear ’49ers,

I am writing my 2018 spring Luther newsletter in the afternoon of February 23rd. I often wonder about the number of 49ers who are still available to read what I write about ??? It has been a long, cold winter in my opinion.

Last night, (Thursday), Marilyn and I were at the Fieldhouse to watch the Luther women defeat Simpson in the semi-final round of the Iowa Conference basketball tournament. For the fourth year in a row, Luther will play in the championship game, this year against Wartburg. The Luther gals have been a great group for several years—thanks to Amanda Bailey, the head coach. Really, it is quite an event when our college defeats Wartburg in any athletic contest.

From my vantage point, I believe that our college is doing O.K. (remember—what do I know?) I think the decreasing enrollment is a serious situation. Next fall will probably see an enrollment of less than 2,000 students, down from the high point of about 2,500. That brings about a real financial situation and real decisions of cutting back and in what areas. Tough decisions!!!!

I don’t have much to write about. I never hear from classmates. March the first, Marilyn and I plan to be in Hawaii for five days. We are looking forward to the adventure.

I must repeat again in this letter my remark—if you can, please remember our college in any way that you can. Money gifts are always welcome. You can make a gift today by using the attached form and the reusable envelope or by visiting givenow.luther.edu.
