Spring 2019
Dear Classmate,
I am writing today from the Marshall Lounge in the Dahl Centennial Union on Luther’s beautiful campus. This is the first thing I have written on campus since I turned in that senior paper back in April of 1989. But, sitting between paintings of Leif Erikson and Roald Amundsen, I felt inspired to reach out to you and talk a little Luther College.
Campus has been busy the past two days. Yesterday the career fair brought students to the Union to look for internships and full-time employment. I was at Luther representing internship opportunities for my employer and enjoyed my discussions with the students. I can assure you that the students today are not that different from when we were running around campus. They are pretty focused on what is happening day-to-day on campus but are also eager to find their place outside the Luther bubble.
Today, the campus is bustling with visiting high school senior. It was great to run into a classmate of my wife (Class of 1995) and his family. I remember how excited I was to visit Luther way back in the day. Luther’s buildings and campus features are so different than in the mid-1980s. Beautiful buildings for science, business, and the arts as well as changes to the green spaces make Luther a wonderful place to study and visit.
Yesterday (3/7) also marked Luther’s fourth annual Giving Day. It was a record-setting day with well over $800K raised in a 12-hour period. The Board of Regents generously matched a large portion of the donations made by friends and alumni. If you missed the opportunity to give on March 7th, it is not too late. Luther has a dedicate link on its website: givenow.luther.edu. Very simple to enter the amount you would like to donate and the method you would like to use.
It has been good for my soul to be back on Luther’s campus the past couple of days. As you and I approach our 30th reunion this fall, some of my memories of the happenings and shenanigans are starting to fade a bit. I hope we can reconnect as a class at Homecoming, October 4 – 6. I can’t believe 30 years have already passed. It will be great to see you in October!
I will close with some inspiration to get us through what has been a brutal and never-ending winter in the upper Midwest. Dear classmate, I wish you a happy and healthy spring. And, I hope that is comes soon.
I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration
Of green fires lit on the soil of the earth, this blaze
Of growing, and sparks that puff in wild gyration,
Faces of people streaming across my gaze.
-D.H. Lawrence
Warm wishes,

As you may remember from your Fall 2018 Class Agent letter, Luther has recently completed an extensive brand strategy research process.
As a result of our research and in collaboration with members of the Luther community, we have developed several statements that will guide future communications. We know that you, our alumni, are often asked about your alma mater. What you say to prospective students and their families about Luther College can have a huge impact on their decisions to visit campus, apply and, hopefully, enroll. You know Luther well. You matter to us and we’re interested in hearing from you. We invite you to take a few minutes to preview some of our new statements and share your thoughts. The example statements, as well as a response survey, are available online: luther.edu/alumni/brandsurvey Many thanks!
