CIES Weekly Newsletter March 6 - 12, 2022

Announcements

  • International student seniors:  If you are NOT graduating as planned this May, you must inform your DSO in CIES as soon as possible. If you don’t let us know in advance about any change to your plans, your SEVIS record will auto-complete after spring semester.
  • The Summer Student/Faculty Collaborative Research Program provides opportunities for students to engage in collaborative research projects with faculty members during the two months of Luther’s summer session (June/July). Proposals are due in the Office of the Provost (Union 262) by noon the 2nd Monday of March (3/14). Complete information and application guidelines here!
  • Do you love to work with people? Would you like to enhance your leadership and outdoor skills? Become a leader for the 2022 Endeavor Together Program! The Center for Sustainable Communities is now taking applications for Endeavor Together pre-orientation leaders for 2022. The Endeavor Together Leadership Program provides current Luther students with leadership training to prepare them to lead the incoming first-year pre-orientation trips in August. Along with Wilderness First Aid training, leaders will learn how to mentor incoming first-year students through the facilitation of group discussions, active listening, and leading group challenges in the out-of-doors, all while creating positive group dynamics. Spring training begins in March with meetings once a month. For more information, contact Kim Chham at [email protected] or apply online by March 7th.
  • International Students:  CIES has created a new KATIE site called International Student Resources. This site contains a variety of information and resources about topics that apply to you as an F-1 student at Luther. Please check it out and get in the habit of looking there first when a question comes up about taxes, CPT, health insurance, and more. We also welcome feedback on additional topics which you think should be included. (Email us if you have problems accessing the site)
  • International students taxes. Please note that you cannot file your tax return until you receive your 1042-S. The college will provide this form to you in March. CIES does not conduct tax workshops, but we do provide the software (GTP) and information that will help you complete your tax return correctly. These are the federal tax instructions; however, remember it is not time to file yet since the 1042-S documents are not ready!  CIES will be sending out additional information and reminders about tax filing in March.

Events

  • Register for the National Student Leadership Diversity Convention! The National Student Leadership Diversity Convention is the largest national gathering of student leaders and campus based advisors to address the most critical topics of diversity and social justice challenging our campuses today. Through experiential workshops, keynote sessions, and round table discussions teams of students will explore various elements of diversity and how they affect themselves and their campuses. During the conference students will be led through facilitated workshops to develop a Campus Action Plan for a program or event that the teams selects to work on together on in order to bring back a piece of the NSLDC experience to their own campuses. The in-person conference will be held April 22-23 in New York City. The virtual conference will be held April 30th. Request for conference support is available here!
  • The CIES office is partnering with ClipDart to give FREE haircuts to Black men on campus. Gil Jordan IV will be here 2 times per month throughout the semester in CFA room #143. Sign up for an appointment here!
