Green Germany: Advanced Models of Sustainability

Green Germany J-term Course

Offered for the third time, this course explores environmental sustainability in an area of Europe that is way ahead of the U.S. in renewable energy production, energy conservation, mandated recycling, and a commitment to lifelong environmental education. In January 2013, students grappled with the long-term ethics and practicality of alternative energy sources as they toured a nuclear power plant, climbed a wind turbine, experienced a homestay and learned in a green school, and skied with Forest Kindergarteners in Lillehammer. In Berlin, they also discussed with Germany’s Green Party the ethics and costs of that country’s controversial decision to shut down its nuclear power plants, and in Oslo and Lillehammer, explored with Norwegians their efforts to support social justice and sustainable peace-making in the world.
