The Dorothy M. Ansett Scholarship, established by Betty (Ansett) Witte and Lois Ansett in honor of Dorothy Ansett, great-grandmother to Benjamin Kratchmer '10 and Angela Kratchmer '13. The scholarship shall support two students, who by audition and selection by the Conductor of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, have been named principal player of cello and principal player of second violin, in the symphony. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit alone. In any given year that the spending allowance exceeds the stated amount for two awards above, additional merit based scholarships may be awarded to deserving symphony orchestra players.

The Frank R. Barth Prize in the Department of Economics and Business, established by Frank '40 and Marjorie (Hove) Barth '42, to be awarded to acknowledge academic performance and/or future potential to students majoring in economics, accounting, and management.

The Marjorie V.Barth Prize in the Department of Art, established by Frank '40 and Marjorie (Hove) Barth '42, to be awarded to acknowledge academic performance and/or future potential to students majoring in art.

The Bentdahl Award for Excellence in Nursing, established by Ann Bentdahl '85 and Roger Smith, shall be awarded to nursing students of junior or senior standing, who wish to pursue a January or June nursing internship in the Twin Cities area, with preference given to students who carry out their internship within the Allina Health system. A maximum of ten awards will be made per academic year.

The Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Prize for Opera Performance, established in celebration of the two generations of Luther College graduates in the Brudos family, including Alan R. Brudos '55, Eric C. Brudos '85, and Ginger (Felland) Brudos '85, is awarded each year to the outstanding opera performance student for use in his or her senior year. A committee selected by senior voice faculty shall determine the winner based upon quality of performance and promise. Each year, the Brudos Prize recipient will perform the Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Recital during which members of the Brudos family may publicly award the prize.

The Joan deAlbuquerque Memorial Prize for Band was established in memory of former Luther College Director of Bands, Dr. Joan deAlbuquerque. The mission of the prize is to encourage, recognize and promote musical excellence by showcasing exceptionally talented students to a broad audience. The scholarship shall be awarded to the recipient(s) of the band (wind/brass/percussion) concerto competition. An audition process to select the prize recipient will be held in the academic year in which the competition takes place. Preference shall be given to members of the Luther College Concert Band, however, it shall be open to other students participating in a Luther College instrumental ensemble at the discretion of the Director of Bands. The audition process will be managed by the Director of Bands. Selection of the recipient(s) is at the discretion of the Director of Bands, in consultation with a committee of adjudicators.

Dr. Joan deAlbuquerque was an inspirational conductor of the Luther concert band from 2011-2020. She passed away on September 6, 2021 at the age of 54. Joan received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Michigan State University and earned a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University, where she studied with John Whitwell. She earned her Doctorate in Wind Conducting at the University of North Texas while studying under Eugene Migliaro Corporon, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Joan was a great and caring musician and conductor, loved by all for her passion for music. She was a teacher, band director, adjudicator, conductor, professor, pianist, singer, flutist, and published author in music textbooks. Joan was Band Director at Adams State University in Colorado and Associate Director of Bands at California State University, Long Beach. At Luther, Joan was Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands for 9 years (2011-2020). Joan's bands performed internationally, including Norway, Spain, Iceland and notable locations throughout the U.S. including Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Joan was also a clinician in Israel, sharing her love of teaching music.

Joan was the first female Director of Bands at Luther College. She was proud to follow in the footsteps of legendary Luther conductors who had made Luther famous for musical excellence, and was determined to build on that legacy. Joan was known for highlighting the connection between the music generated on stage with the “music” each student generated in their personal lives. While her passion for music was highly inspirational to students and audiences where ever she taught, it was also impactful throughout professional music associations, as well as local, and regional communities.

The E-Club Entrepreneurial Leadership Prize, established by members and friends of the Entrepreneurship Club, shall be awarded to qualified students who have shown strong leadership as members of the Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club) at Luther College, and will be awarded in addition to the student's regular financial aid package.

The Henrik and Marcia Engebretson Endowed Scholarship, established by Henrik '57 and Marcia (Borreson) Engebretson '58 in honor of their children Erik '82, Kari '84, and Maren '91, and shall serve to endow the Erik, Kari, and Maren Engebretson Chair for Principal Horn in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. The recipient will be chosen through a process of auditions under the guidance of the conductor of the orchestra.

The Douglas L. Esse '71 Award in Political Science and Religion, established by Ann (Furman) Esse '71, shall be given in alternating years to a junior or senior political science or religion major. The faculty in each respective department will identify excellent papers over an academic year from sophomore through junior majors for review by the department. The respective department will select a student(s) paper deemed exemplary in its scholarship and the award shall be given in the ensuing academic year.

The Colin Y. Farbotko Memorial Scholarship, established by friends and classmates in memory of Colin Farbotko '00, shall be awarded to a qualified rising senior art major with or without regard to financial need. Preference shall be given to students interested in sculpture.

The Olga Fischer-Proehl International Studies Scholarship, established by Jutta F. Anderson in honor of her mother, Olga Fischer-Proehl, a German business woman of great strength, courage, and perseverance who accepted an extraordinary challenge when her husband suddenly died during early post WWII years and when there were three children under twelve to be raised. She decided to continue running the foundry, Uerdinger Metallwerke Wilhelm Fischer, which the couple had started in the late thirties. She did so successfully for the next three decades. The scholarship shall be awarded to a woman student majoring in International Studies (for use during the junior or senior year). The scholarship shall be used to offset the additional tuition and fees incurred as a result of a semester abroad immersion experience required of all International Studies majors. This scholarship is intended to support an outstanding International Studies major who demonstrates intellectual curiosity, cultural sensitivity, maturity, and an eagerness to explore connections among an increasingly interconnected world.

The Ida M. and Olaf J. Fosso Prize in American History, established by Doyle R. Fosso in honor of his parents, Olaf '30 and Ida Fosso, shall be awarded each year to the best student essay on any topic in American History.

The Dr. Ronald and Carole Fox Music Scholarship, established by Dr. Ron Fox, professor emeritus of music, and his wife Carole, shall serve to endow the Dr. Ronald and Carole Fox Chair for Principal Trumpet in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, and be awarded to the student who, by audition, is selected to serve as the principal player of the trumpet selection in the symphony orchestra.

The Richard C. and Joann M. Hemp Family Prize for Orchestra Performance, established by Richard '64 and Joann (Harr) Hemp '65, shall be awarded annually, through an audition process, to rising seniors who are members of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra.

The Helen (Hoff) James Music Scholarship, established by Helen (Hoff) James '65 and Betty Hoff '60, shall serve to endow the Helen (Hoff) James Chair for Principal Bassoon in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, and be awarded to the student who, by audition, is selected to serve as the principal player of the bassoon section in the symphony orchestra.

The Karen Julesberg Scholarship, established by Karen Julesberg '60, shall be awarded to qualified students with demonstrated need for financial assistance who qualify for the Student Support Services (SSS) or TRIO Achievement Programs, or similar, designed to assist students as they adjust to the academic, personal, and social demands of college.

The Edward A. Kaschins Endowed Scholarship in Economics, Accounting, or Management, established by Elizabeth Kaschins in honor and memory of Edward A. Kaschins (1939-2017), professor emeritus of economics. The scholarship shall be awarded to a junior majoring in one of the disciplines in the department of economics, accounting and management. The award may be renewable for the student's senior year upon evidence of continuing academic success, commitment to the discipline, and the ability to complete the major. A new recipient will normally be selected every two years. The department faculty will select a student who presents an exemplary academic record in all coursework, evidence of active engagement in campus life, with consideration of financial need.

The Don Kemp Memorial Social Work Scholarship, established by the Kemp family in recognition of the contributions of Don Kemp, director of the social work program from 1978-1997 and to honor Don's memory as husband, father, teacher, and social justice activist before his untimely death on March 4, 2003. The scholarship shall be awarded to a social work major who best embodies the mission and objectives of the social work program with personal qualities of commitment, initiative, and service. The recipient is chosen by the faculty of the social work program.

The Kerry Knodle Scholarship for Percussion, established by Kerry Knodle '72, shall serve to endow the Kerry Knodle Chair for Principal Percussion in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, and be awarded to the student who, by audition, is selected to serve as the principal player of the percussion section in the symphony orchestra.

The Stephen E. and Susan L. Kraabel Actuarial Award, established by Stephen '63 and Susan Kraabel, and Timothy Kraabel '88, shall be awarded to students who have successfully passed an actuarial exam, sponsored by the Society of Actuaries or the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries, or a similar organization.

The Krahn Family Student Life Service Award, established by Roger '68 and Laurie Krahn, shall be awarded to a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Students are selected through a nomination process.

The Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award, established by George Kuh '68, regent emeritus, Warren Kuh '74, and Kristian Kuh '97, shall be given each year to a student whose character, leadership, and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life. This award is managed through an application process.

The Professor John W. Kurtich Foundation Scholarship, established by the Professor John W. Kurtich Foundation for Study and Research, shall be awarded to a current student with interest in the arts and/or archaeology. Reflecting on the foundation's priorities and honoring the impressive career of Professor Kurtich, the college will select a recipient based primarily on merit; choosing a student who is among the 'best and brightest' in the areas of visual and performing arts, and/or archaeology.

The Brianne Lee Spanish Scholarship, established by family and friends to honor Brianne Lee '78, who died of cancer during her first year of graduate studies in Spanish at Marquette University. In keeping with Brianne's excellence as a student and her leadership in the Spanish program, the recipient of the award will be determined by the following criteria and in consultation with all permanent faculty in the Spanish section of the department of modern languages: (1) the recipient must be a senior majoring in Spanish with solid evidence that completion of the major is imminent; (2) the student recipient must show academic excellence by having a minimum overall GPA, as well as a Spanish GPA, of 3.5; (3) the recipient will have shown a strong degree of commitment to the Spanish program as evidenced by participation in some of its many extracurricular and service opportunities; (4) the recipient will have indicated future career goals that will incorporate the use of Spanish and knowledge of Hispanic cultures; and (5) the student will be expected to participate in Spanish department activities during their senior year by registering for a class or the senior project, or through some other academic contribution as determined in conjunction with the faculty.

The David O. Lomen Award in Mathematics, established by Constance Lomen and Catherine Lomen-Hoerth to honor the memory of David O. Lomen '59, shall be awarded to a full-time junior or senior mathematics major, in excellent academic standing as determined by the mathematics faculty with consideration given to a student's character and involvement in the Luther community.

The Melin International Studies Scholarship, established by John '70 and Barbara Melin and Bennett Melin,shall be awarded to one student majoring in International Studies, to manage and meet expenses related to tuition, travel, room and board, and living expenses while abroad. While the award shall be given to students with or without regard to demonstrated financial need, preference shall be given to students with financial need and who otherwise would not be able to afford the study abroad experience. The members of the International Studies Board shall elect one recipient, by application and interview, annually. First preference shall be given to an International Studies major undertaking an academic year, semester, or semester and a summer study in Africa, with further preference given to study in sub-Saharan African nations, such as Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, eSwatini (Swaziland), Tanzania, etc. If no eligible International Studies majors are identified, second preference shall be given to students of any major engaged in similar study (as described above) in Africa.

The Kathryn Ulvilden Moen Fund for Organ and Church Music, established by Kathryn (Ulvilden) Moen '41 in celebration of the three generations of family members who have attended Luther College. This fund, supported by the Kathryn Ulvilden Moen Fund of the InFaith Community Foundation, creates the Kathryn Ulvilden Moen Organ Scholars, awarded to outstanding organ students who are prospects for a career in performance or church music. If no students qualify, outstanding cello students may be chosen, and shall be recognized as the Kathryn Ulvilden Moen Cello Scholars.

The Andrea Nelson and Kathryn Nelson Endowed Scholarship, established by David T. '49 and Betty (Rikansrud) Nelson '57 in honor of their daughters Andrea '81 and Kathryn '83, and shall serve to endow the Andrea Nelson and Kathryn Nelson Chair for principal viola in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. The recipient will be chosen through a process of auditions under the guidance of the conductor of the orchestra.

The Karl H. and Anna B. Nordgaard Memorial Nursing Award, established by Karlyn (Nordgaard) '55 and John Cross in honor of Karl '25 and Anna Nordgaard, shall be awarded to a senior nursing student who has demonstrated high standards of excellence in nursing studies and has a demonstrated need for financial assistance.

The Emery O. Nordness Memorial Award for Business, established by Alan R. '55 and Sally J. Brudos in appreciation of Emery O. Nordness '32, for his loving wisdom as a music and band teacher in Viroqua, Wisconsin. As a teacher, he provided undergirding support and encouragement to students with respect to the abilities and interests of the whole person. In the case of the donor, he saw beyond his interest and excellence in music by encouraging him to pursue his business talents and aptitude, while nurturing his musical interests as an avocation. The award shall be given annually to one outstanding senior majoring in accounting, business, economics, or management. The student is chosen based upon academic merit and promise for the future, with preference given to a student who has demonstrated and maintains an active interest, and participation in, the arts.

The Anna (Kemp) and Russell Norris Endowed Scholarship, established by Don and Jane Kemp in honor of the marriage of their daughter, Anna Mary Amanda to Russell Joseph Norris, and shall serve to endow the Anna (Kemp) and Russell Norris Chair for Principal Oboe in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. The recipient will be chosen through a process of auditions under the guidance of the conductor of the orchestra.

The Fred Nyline Distinguished Award in Music, established by Jaime (Rowe) '00 and Matt Titus '01 in honor of Fred Nyline, professor emeritus of music. Fred Nyline conducted the Luther College Concert Band, Varsity Band, and the Wind and Percussion Ensemble for 38 years. He also taught advanced instrumental conducting. Before joining the Luther faculty in 1973, Nyline served on the faculty of the University of Minnesota as associate director of bands and director of the University Men's Chorus. He has been a guest faculty member at the University of Illinois and director of bands in the Austin, Minnesota school system. Nyline frequently served as guest conductor for the Musashino Academia Wind Ensemble in Tokyo, Japan. Nyline has served as festival director, guest conductor and adjudicator throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Pacific Rim, including such locations as Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. Under Nyline's direction, the Luther College Concert Band performed at numerous state and national music conventions, participated in yearly Midwest tours, two European tours, two extended tours of the West Coast and Hawaii, and three tours of Japan and China. The award shall be given annually to a junior or senior whose character, leadership, and participation in the music program demonstrates a strong contribution to the program in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. The recipient must be participating in the Luther College Concert Band and be in good academic standing.

The Timothy and Sandra Peter Music Leadership Award, established by alumni, parents, and friends in celebration of the dedicated teaching and choral conducting careers of Timothy '86 and Sandra Peter, especially the profound influence they have had on the first-year student experience at Luther College. The scholarship shall be awarded to two first-year students, one member from each of the first-year choral ensembles (Aurora and Norskkor) with a one-time financial benefit for their sophomore year respectfully. Recipients shall be selected by the directors in partnership with the music department chair. Recipients shall be selected not only for their musicianship, but also for their personal leadership, commitment to ensemble, and their mutual respect for colleagues. Recipients may be music or non-music majors, shall be in good academic standing, and need not qualify for financial assistance.

The Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Award, established by Robert Rosholt '51, shall be awarded by competitive audition to sophomore or junior students based on: technical command of repertoire, musicality, excellence in ensemble, ability to inspire and work well with colleagues, and work ethic. A panel of judges will make the final selection.

The Uwe Rudolf and Karen Braun Outstanding Accounting Scholar Award, established by Karen (Wilken) Braun '85 in honor of Uwe Rudolf, professor emeritus of accounting and management, shall be awarded to an outstanding accounting major, for use during their senior year, based on the following criteria: the student/s will be selected by a committee of full-time accounting faculty; the student/s must be an accounting major completing their junior year of study; and, the faculty committee will consider the students dedication to learning, scholarship in coursework, work ethic and character.

The Audrey (Hanson) Sorlien and Marilyn (Sorlien) Skatrud Scholarship for Flute, established by Susan Sorlien '73 and Kara (Skatrud) Baylor '92 in recognition of Luther College's powerful tradition of music scholarship and performance, to honor the role the flute has played in the extended Sorlien family, and to honor their mothers who were both flute players--Audrey (Hanson) Sorlien '49 and Marilyn (Sorlien) Skatrud '58. The scholarship endows the Audrey (Hanson) Sorlien and Marilyn (Sorlien) Skatrud Chair for Flute in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra and the Luther College Concert Band, and is awarded to the student who, by audition, is selected to serve as the principal player of the flute section, rotating between the concert band and the symphony orchestra each year.

The Genevieve E. Stelberg Award, established through the estate of Genevieve Stelberg, shall be awarded to students selected on the basis of participation in co-curricular activities rather than on high academic achievement or extreme financial need.

The Jim and Wendy Stevens Award in Biology, established by Wendy (Tessman) '69 and Jim Stevens, shall be awarded to qualified junior or senior students, majoring in biology, without regard to financial need. Students must show strong academic potential, strong work ethic, and have demonstrated exceptional competency and capability as a biology lab assistant.

The Ryan Stroschein Computer Science Scholarship, established by Ryan Stroschein '99, shall be awarded to an outstanding junior majoring in computer science. The scholarship recognizes well-rounded students, excelling in the computer science field, as well as extra-curricular activities or study within other departments. Secondary consideration is given based on financial need.

The Bennett A. and E. Oneida Talle Memorial Award for Business, established through the estate of Bennett and Oneida Talle, shall be awarded to qualified juniors or seniors majoring in the area of business, economics, management, and accounting, and who demonstrate outstanding academic ability.

The Edward O. Thorland Memorial Prize in Computer Science, established by the Thorland family, former students and friends, to be given to outstanding junior computer science majors. Dr. Thorland '64, became the computer center director in 1970 and was largely responsible for the establishment of the computer science major in 1975.

The Joy Tlou Memorial Award, established by Hla Tlou in memory of her brother, Bonolo Joy Tlou '86, shall be awarded to students, with or without a demonstrated need for financial assistance, whose character, leadership, and participation in the campus community enhance the quality of campus life and encourage a 'community of Joy'. Born in Africa. Raised in Decorah. Educated at Luther College. Celebrated for years in Park City, Utah. From the humblest beginnings to universal adoration. Joy was loved by everyone, everywhere. He was the Director of Public Relations for the Salt Lake Community College System. He was an artist who made beautiful pottery. He was a singer and musician whose performances spanned genres from funk to acoustic. He was a cook who wowed anyone lucky enough to sit at his table. More than all that, he was a friend to everyone. He was called the mayor of Park City for good reason. From college through his final days, he helped raise money for worthy causes. He made time for children and adults alike. He held massive dinners with no purpose other than to bring people together. His surprise phone calls and visits “just checking in” were welcome any day, any time. Joy touched people. Joni Mitchell wrote a song about him. Seriously. Simply put, Joy brought the joy everywhere he went.

The Karl, Lillian, and Henrietta Torgerson Endowed Scholarship, established by Karl '36 and Lillian (Madland) Torgerson '65 and Henrietta Torgerson '39, in memory of Katherine M. Torgerson, Luther College carillonneur from 1977-1985, and to commemorate the family relationship with Luther since its founding. The scholarship serves to endow the Torgerson Concertmaster in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra (first violin) and the Luther College Concert Band (first clarinet). The recipients will be chosen through a process of auditions under the guidance of the conductors of the orchestra and the concert band.

The Dorothy (Bonnell) and Russell Ziemer Scholarship, established by Jane, Don, and Anna Kemp, in honor of Dorothy (Bonnell) and Russell Ziemer, aunt and uncle and also godparents to Jane Kemp. The scholarship also recognizes Dorothy Ziemer's parents, Anna and Benjamin Bonnell, in whose home Ben frequently played the trombone. The scholarship endows the Dorothy (Bonnell) and Russell Ziemer Chair for principal trombone in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. The recipient will be chosen through a process of auditions under the guidance of the conductor of the orchestra.
