Program dates: August to December, April to August

Students participating in the Japan Studies in Nagasaki (JASIN) program are based at the Nagasaki University of Foreign Languages and can take various courses in English including business, economics, society, history, culture, and literature, as well as in seminars in traditional Japanese arts. In addition to taking classes taught in English, students may also enroll in courses in simplified Japanese (with other international students) or in courses from the regular university curriculum (with Japanese students).

Eligibility: Second-semester sophomores, juniors, seniors; 2.5 minimum GPA; no previous Japanese language study required

Financial aid: Students should refer to the Financial Aid Office for information on financial aid eligibility. Students should also check on outside scholarships. Bridging, Gilman, NSEP, and Freeman scholarships may be available for this program.

Housing: Homestays and college dormitory

Program sponsor: University of South-Eastern Norway

The University of South-Eastern Norway program at the Bø, campus offers students the opportunity to study at a Norwegian college in English and to study Norwegian language at various levels. Course options include Scandinavian Studies, Alpine Ecology, Ecophilosophy, Tourism and the Environment, Business Administration, Sustainability Management and Norwegian language, among others.

Eligibility: Second-semester sophomores, juniors, seniors; 2.5 minimum GPA

Financial aid: Students should refer to the Financial Aid Office for information on financial aid eligibility. Students who receive Pell Grants as a portion of their financial aid package are also eligible to apply for a federal Gilman Scholarship (competitive). Students may also apply for a Wigeland Scholarship for Study in Scandinavia through Luther College. Please note: application for the Wigeland must be made in the fall semester of the year before study on the program.

Program sponsor: University of Agder

The University of Agder in Kristiansand, Norway offers students the opportunity to study at a Norwegian college in English and to study Norwegian language at various levels. Course options include The Nordic Welfare State, Global Environmental Issues, The European Union – Institutions and Politics, Immigration, as well as courses in fine arts, science, and management.

Eligibility: Second-semester sophomores, juniors, seniors; 2.5 minimum GPA

Financial aid: Students should refer to the Financial Aid Office for information on financial aid eligibility. Students who receive Pell Grants as a portion of their financial aid package are also eligible to apply for a federal Gilman Scholarship (competitive). Program sponsors: Volda University College

The Volda program offers students the opportunity to study in English at a Norwegian college. Volda University College is a small institution known for its lively academic and social environment and is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Possible course options include Religion in Norway, The Norwegian Welfare State, and Visual Communication.

Eligibility: Second-semester sophomores, juniors, seniors; 2.5 minimum GPA

Program sponsors: Chicago Center and Luther College

Enrollment limit: 8 Luther students per year

The Chicago Center program provides community-based living, learning, and working experiences for students who opt to complete their Social Work Field Instruction or Education Practicum in an urban setting. Students are housed in three or four bedroom apartments in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood.

Eligibility: Seniors completing Social Work Field Instruction or Teaching Practicums

Six colleges founded by Norwegian-American immigrants sponsor an annual summer Peace Scholars program in Norway, designed to deepen students’ understanding of the central issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace. Through an application and interview process, students from Augsburg, Augustana (Sioux Falls), Concordia (Moorhead), Luther, Pacific Lutheran, and St. Olaf are selected as Peace Scholars and awarded a seven-week academic experience held in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.
