This course is a study of English theater–among the richest in the world in its variety and depth–and the ways that it both mirrors and seeks to influence social values by dramatizing ethical conflict. Our exploration will be based in London, a crossroads of world cultures, with side trips to historic cities, including Stratford, the birthplace of Shakespeare, and York, a city that retains its medieval walls and cathedral.
