Setting Foot in a New World

Across the Pond

After three flights and lots of airplane food, we finally arrived in Belfast. The long flights were filled with sleep, laughter and, of course reading. As we began to further learn about Lewis and Tolkien's fairytale lands, we quickly bonded as a group. Jet lag set in for most of us as we tried to adjust to the time change throughout travel. We stayed on our feet after landing and looked forward to our first night of sleep in actual beds.

First Reflections

Upon arrival, we quickly visited the Ulster Folk & Transport Musuem. The outdoor and indoor exhibits gave glimpses into the world of C.S. Lewis' childhood. Many of the buildings and cobblestone streets came alive as we imagined Lewis' introduction to the Chronicles of Narnia. Most of us enjoyed our first authentic Irish meal at a tea room where many of us tried Irish stew.

After finally unloading at the hotel, we took a walking tour of the Belfast City Center. Here we saw the City Hall, many shopping centers, endless pubs and magnificent architecture. We began to understand the layout of our surroundings and/or ourselves in the city.

Dinner proceded as we all enthusiastically pursued food and rest. We ate at The Crowne, a historical pub restored to its original beauty. Juicy burgers and Irish potatoes soon filled our empty stomachs. Each of us made our way back to the hotel for showers and well-needed rest.

Exhausted travelers have transformed into enthusiastic explorers. The cityscape is continuously changing into an alternate world of Lewis' many creations. As we continue to read, we have also been able to visit the many sights and scenes that define Lewis. His writing along with his personal experiences are scattered all around us in Belfast.

Looking ahead, we will have cozy class meetings from the comfort of our hotel. Our free day is quickly approaching and we also await the pantomime performance. We also look forward to the north coast where the castles perch along the seaside. The world of Narnia is unfolding around us as we step through the wardrobe.
