Change of plans: A day in Sakata!

Today we had a change from the original plans to go up into the mountains to see some mummies due to a snow storm. This morning we took a two hour train ride to a small town, where we visited a couple Shinto shrines and then to another temple and museum with mummies in the cold rain and snow. We saw two mummies; one was 260 years old, and the other was 250 years old. Both voluntarily passed away by starving to death in a cave during a ritual of nonstop chanting without food or water present in the cave. However, the mummies are believed to have continued living on, the soul still in their body. We were also given a bit of a Buddha’s robe for free from the temple after we left.
