Bergen: The Beautiful Waterfront City

At Luther, we have a great global story to tell. This blog, in part, gives it voice!

In October 2019, the Institute of International Education released its annual Open Doors Report. Luther was ranked #9 of all baccalaureate institutions in the country for the number of students studying abroad on short-term duration programs.

During J-Term 2020, 243 students and 26 program leaders will participate in one of Luther's 14 courses around the globe. This blog is about more than numbers, though. Its purpose is to provide glimpses into our students’ experiences as they live out an important component of the college’s mission—to move us into a larger world.

So, take a look at the course descriptions, review the itineraries, and learn about our leaders. But most importantly, follow along as our J-Term students experience a much larger world.

After spending a week of nonstop rain and overcast days, the city of Bergen still was able to display its jaw-dropping scenery. In Bergen, a city of about 270,000 people, I have come across so many different attractions on foot. The walkability of this city has made it easy for us to dive into topics of urbanization and sustainability, from our meetings with the transportation department of Bergen to the ocean plastics awareness campaign at the Bergen Aquarium.  This old town was built right on the water and on the edge of the mountains providing charm to this city. When I first arrived, I was amazed by its views of the fjords and mountains that are distinct to Western Norway. In my opinion, this was one of the most beautiful cities that we visited throughout our time abroad.

The most famous site in this town is Bryggen, this beautiful part of the city has been standing since 1720, made entirely of wood, and housing the local arts district of Bergen. Bryggen was on the edge of the water, and provided us with beautiful views of the water and the shipping ports along the coastline. Fun fact: the area of Bryggen is a UNESCO World Heritage site!

The city has many museums that display the fascinating history of Bergen and gave us the opportunity to learn more about its history. The last few days in this city were amazing, starting with Fløibanen, a funicular that takes us up to see a breathtaking view of the city, then with the amazing views from the fjord cruise and finally learning about the history of the textile industry at Oleana, it has all been life-changing for our group.

Norway has given the absolute best views and best experience ever, maybe one day I will return. For now, it is time to say ha det (goodbye!) to Norway, but only for now! We are en route to the United States as we type this! We can't wait to share all of our pictures and memories with you all!

Tusen Takk, Norge! We will miss you!
