Planes, Trains, Automobiles…and Taxis

We are all adjusting well to the transition from the States to Roatan. One of the biggest adjustments for most of us is how we get around on the island. Here, the main mode of transportation is the use of taxis. There is no shortage of these white cars with yellow numbers on them driving around the island. There are no Ubers and Lyfts here, so there is no planning your ride ahead of time. One of the first things we were taught on the island is to stand on the side of the road for the direction you are traveling. After a few days at our internships, we began to learn the expected price for our taxi ride. It was a new skill for many to negotiate with the driver to lower the fare, but became easier as we began to learn the island.

Another way to get around the island is the use of buses. The buses run from one end of the island to the other and allow people to jump on at any point in-between there. These buses have a consistent 20 limpera fee, a little less than the U.S. dollar, and it costs that no matter how long you ride. They are usually filled with 10-16 passengers, making it a packed ride a majority of the time. Knowing the island helps us tell the driver when we are at our destination, as they only stop when directed to. The buses are a great choice when we are traveling long distances, and a great way to meet new people on the island.
