Before telling about my experience, I think it’s important to have a little background: Miss Peggy is the one behind Clinica Esperanza and all of its success. She is a nurse who started the clinic in her kitchen, which then moved to her basement, which then got moved to where it is now, in a two story building that was built with donations from many generous people.
On the first day of my internship, I walked into Clinica Esperanza not knowing what sort of things I would see. While getting oriented, I learned that there are different areas of specialty the clinic has. General medicine, pharmacy, dental and the emergency room are on the ground floor, while pediatrics, diabetics, obstetrics, and gynecology are on the second floor.
So far, I’ve gotten a chance to work in the pediatric unit as well as pharmacy and triage. The clinic is sponsored by donations from generous donors from all over, including people from the United States, as well as a small fee that patients pay in order to receive an appointment and whatever medications or medical attention they need afterwards.
After working side-by-side with the people at the clinic, it is easy to see how dedicated they are to helping each individual patient. After seeing patients leave the clinic, it is easily understood how much they appreciate and cherish having a facility like Clinica Esperanza.
