What is Net Neutrality?

Net neutrality has been in the news. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will be making a big vote on December 14th. To help you navigate this complex but important topic, your helpful information professionals at the Library have created a handy information guide about net neutrality.

What is Net Neutrality?

It is the principle that all Internet traffic be treated equally. It is in contrast to a model where Internet Service Providers (ISPs) could create “fast lanes” and “slow lanes” of Internet traffic, and charge different rates for different kinds of traffic, such as traffic from specific websites or specific kinds of content, like streaming media.

What do people say about it?

There are proponents of net neutrality and people who oppose this principle. See the linked images for the key arguments for and against net neutrality.

What else do I need to know?

The FCC is going to vote on December 14 on a proposal to eliminate net neutrality guidelines for broadband Internet. Come by Preus Library to see our full display, including key terminology and a timeline of events related to net neutrality.
