Hot Reads for Cold Nights 2019

What makes reading during January even better? Winning prizes!

Participate in Preus Library’s Hot Reads for Cold Nights and earn chances to win prizes for all of the good books you read over winter break and J-term. Not only will this recreational reading win you prizes, but according to surveys by the National Endowment for the Arts, people who read recreationally are more likely to engage with their community. Furthermore, people who read tend to have longer attention spans and increased exposure to new ideas than those who spend their time on the internet or playing video games. Clearly, reading for fun is for more than just fun- it’s an opportunity to expand your understanding of the world and develop life skills! Despite these benefits, many people are choosing not to read, leading to a cultural crisis.

Unfortunately, the rate of recreational reading in the United States is declining at a rapid rate. If this pattern continues, it will likely result in what the National Endowment for the Arts calls “vast cultural impoverishment”. On the bright side, there is an easy answer to this dilemma- reading more! This January, be the change you wish to see by cracking open a good book and getting lost in the story. The future is in your hands!
