STEVE REMMEN, 64, of Decorah, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at his home from a sudden illness. Services were on Saturday, Dec. 28, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Pastor MARK KVALE ‘84 officiating. Organist was Paul Bruvold. Hymns were "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," "Beautiful Savior," "Silent Night" "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." Pallbearers were Karith Remmen, Laurie Remmen, Carolin Remmen, Kaitlyn Humpal, Cory Ellingson and Sherman Watts. Honorary pallbearers were all of Steve's co-workers at Carquest. Interment is in the spring at Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Arrangements were handled by Schluter - Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Steven Douglas Remmen was born April 21, 1949, the son of Glenn and Ruth (Bullard) Remmen in Decorah. Steve was baptized and confirmed at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. He graduated from South Winneshiek School and attended Luther College and NICC in Calmar. He married Marilyn Turner Sept. 15, 1969. They became the parents of Karith. He married JANE (BOWERS) REMMEN ‘75 Aug. 23, 1975, and they were the parents of Laurie and Carolin. He married Carol Harris Jan. 29, 1994, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. Steve worked at Carquest Auto Parts in Decorah. He enjoyed music, his pets, the study of the universe and, in his younger years, sailing and fishing. He was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Steve is survived by his wife, Carol Remmen, Decorah; his parents, Glenn and Ruth Remmen, Decorah; his three daughters: Karith Remmen and her daughter, Kaitlyn Humpal, Des Moines; Laurie Remmen and Cory Ellingson, Jerico; and Carolin Remmen and Sherman Watts, Decorah; one sister, Nancy (Bruce) Layton, Bethesda, Md.; uncle, Rudy Remmen, Decorah; cousins: Lila Holets, Sylvia Benzing, Glorine Puralewski, Marvin Olson, Maureen Rohret, Gary Remmen, Wayne Remmen and Craig Remmen; brothers- and sisters-in-law, David (Lynn) Harris, Stoughton, Wis., and Randi Harris, Postville.

Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents: Gilbert and Ida Remmen and Ralph and Agnes Bullard; uncles and aunts: Olaf and Marie Remmen, Velma Remmen and Anna and Morris Olson; and cousin, Dennis Olson; brother-in-law, Richard Paine; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leo "Dutch" and Lillian (Monson) Harris.
