Frequently Asked Questions

What are the fees associated with the festival?

A 20-minute session costs $20. A 30-minute session costs $30. You will select which option you would like on the registration form, and you can pay your fees on the day of the festival.

What is the difference between the closed sessions and masterclass sessions?

There are two types of sessions available to Dorian Keyboard Festival participants:

  • Closed sessions
  • Masterclass sessions

Closed sessions are 20 minutes long and appropriate for all ability levels. The student plays their prepared piece for one clinician and receives verbal and written feedback from that clinician. Memorization is not required. A student’s private instructor and/or a parent are allowed to attend a closed session.

Masterclass sessions are appropriate for advanced students and are 20 or 30 minutes long. These sessions are open to the public and held in larger performance venues. The festival guest clinician along with Luther piano and organ faculty members hear the performance and give public verbal comments. Performances must be memorized.

What are the student honors recitals?

There are two honors recitals that take place at the Dorian Keyboard Festival. The 4:45 honors recital is intended for students performing intermediate repertoire, and the 5:30 honors recital is intended for students performing advanced repertoire. Students are selected for these recitals based on their performance earlier in the day for the festival clinicians. All recitals take place in the Noble Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.

Students may mark their interest in being considered for the student honors recitals on their registration form. Memorization is required in order to be considered for the recitals.

Do I need to attend all events of the festival?

We encourage students to participate in all aspects of the festival, however some students choose to only participate in certain festival activities.

The festival schedule allows students to participate in many opportunities including a masterclass, harpsichord and organ workshops, and student honors recitals. We strongly encourage students to attend all of these events in order to fully take advantage of the festival offerings! None of the events are required, however, so students can choose to participate only in the activities which interest them.

What are the on-campus housing accommodations available during the festival?

If there is a junior or senior driving themself to campus for the festival, and they require on-campus housing on Friday or Saturday night, they should reach out to Dorian Office at [email protected].

Interested in auditioning for a keyboard music scholarship?

Students interested in attending Luther the following year may audition on piano or organ for a music scholarship during the Festival. The audition is scheduled by checking the scholarship option on the registration form.

If students are also interested in auditioning for a scholarship in voice or another instrument while on campus for the Festival, they may arrange to do so by calling the Admissions Office at 563-387-1287.
