Dinosaurs are a topic that brings out the child in all of us, and this book is certainly full of them. Different species of lesser-known dinosaurs are discussed, along with their abilities to adapt to their specific climates. Special adaptations such as large eyes helped certain species see well in the dark, and long tails provided some grass-eating dinosaurs a way to defend themselves from their meat-eating relatives. With in-depth explanations and scientific descriptions, this book is best suited for slightly more advanced readers.
(TS)

Lost in Time: a medieval adventure is a fairy tale where the Nickelodeon characters Sponge Bob Square pants and Patrick Star go to a medieval themed restaurant. At the restaurant they are chosen to participate in a jousting activity. However, something goes wrong with the seahorses they were riding and SpongeBob and Patrick get thrown into the air and they land in a new world. In this world they are mistaken for great knights and are sent on a mission to rescue the princess from the evil jellyfish dragon. Along the way they meet Squidward the jester and the Black Knight who agree to help them on their way to save the princess. Although this book is a little silly and not an accurate representation of the medieval times, it would be a great resource to use in order to teach the parts of a fairy tale or even just to practice reading skills.

This story and activity book will surely capture the attention of children with its vibrant colors and adventurous plot. A nadar, Boots! focuses on Dora, her sidekick monkey named Boots and their journey to the sea. Once they arrive, they meet a mermaid who teaches Boots how to swim. Throughout the story, Dora asks the reader questions to help her continue the adventure. Readers can complete a small maze included within the story, which has the beach as its final destination. Although the book portrays learning how to swim as an easy task, which some children may struggle with, it encourages students to try to learn this important skill.

Salsa. Colón-Vilá, Lillian. Arte Público Press, 2009. [email protected], (713-743-2998). 31 pp. $7.95. ISBN 978-1-55885-238-9. Illustrated by Roberta Collier-Morales.
Salsa, written by Lillian Colón-Vilá, is a wonderful children’s story about a young girl, Rita, living in a family that loves playing and dancing the salsa. Colón-Vilá uses bright imagery to show the reader not only what Rita does while listening to and playing the salsa, but also how she sings and moves to the music. She writes “1-2 back, 1-2 move those hips, 1-2 shake those shoulders, 1-2 cha-cha-chá…” (Colón-Vilá). The way Colón-Vilá portrays Rita’s character is as a young girl with a large imagination; a girl who loves to dream about herself salsa dancing and playing in a salsa band. The book covers all angles of the salsa including the instruments one would find in a salsa band such as: the güiro, the timables, the trumpet, and the piano. Salsa includes not only interesting facts about instruments in its pages, but also facts about the dance and different aspects for the singers. Children will love all of the fun facts present in this story. If the unique writing style does not capture the reader, the bright beautiful colors used in the illustrations will. Illustrator Roberta Collier-Morales has incorporated many different shades of colors in order to paint a picture of all the different instruments and aspects one would expect to find with the salsa. Collier-Morales creates a wonderful image to what Colón-Vilá writes. Overall, I would rate the book a 4 out of 5 stars for creativity and imagination while explaining a life growing up in a family that loves the salsa.
The triple banana split boy. Corpi, Lucha. Arte Público Press (Piñata Books), 2009. [email protected], (713-743-2998). $15.95. ISBN 978-1-55885-504-5. Illustrated by Lisa Fields.
A story about a boy named Enrique who loves sweets, this book is good for families and classrooms wanting to teach children how to live well in moderation. At first, Enrique’s father tells him that he is not allowed to eat “any sweets at all.” Then the little boy and his mother make a deal so that sweets can be eaten on Mondays and Fridays. By reading El niño goloso children can learn the benefits of planning, waiting, and eating in moderation. The many large illustrations throughout the book are useful for teachers who want to read aloud to a class and also increase student comprehension. However, the pages of this book are not bound, creating a possiblity for disorganizaion. I would recommend this book to elementary school teachers and to parents who have very hungry children!
(MD)
El niño goloso. The Triple Banana Split Boy. Corpi, Lucha. Arte Público Press (Piñata Books), 2009. [email protected], (713-743-2998). 32pp. $15.95. ISBN 978-1-55885-504-5. Illustrated by Lisa Fields.
Enrique has such a strong sweet tooth that it distracts him from everything else in his life, besides sweets. He has trouble concentrating in school while his stomach craves sweets. His dreams are haunted by El Coco, the monster who always appears when Enrique is being particularly gluttonous. His constant cravings also put a strain on his relationship with his parents, and keep him from spending time baking with his Grandma, for he fears he will get into trouble. He finally learns his lesson when his Mother lets him get any treat he wants, and he orders a huge banana split. After eating the banana split, Enrique gets such a bad stomachache that he finds El Coco staring straight back at him in the mirror. From then on, when his mother takes him out, he gets something small that he can enjoy without getting sick. When he starts to learn self-control, he is allowed to bake with his Grandma. Finally, he learns to channel his love for sweets into a true talent for baking.
This story is a fun and easy read, and it teaches an important lesson about learning from your mistakes and learning to control your desires. Enrique grows as an individual and conquers his obsession with sweets. As a result, he is happy with his parents and Grandma, and earns respect from his fellow classmates because of his superior baking skills. He can still enjoy sweets, but in a reasonable fashion. Readers will both learn from this story and enjoy it.
(PO)

Adiós, tricycle. Elya, Susan Middleton. Penguin Group (USA), Inc. (G.P. Putnam’s Sons), 2009. [email protected], (212-366-2000). $16.99. 30 pp. ISBN 978-0-399-24522-0. Illustrated by Elisabeth Schlossberg
A classic tale of growing up but having difficulty holding on to the memories of a simple childhood, Adios, tricycle is enjoyable for everyone! A pig, depicted as a young boy is having a garage sale to sell old clothes and his tricycle since he has outgrown these items. However, when the garage sale begins, he realizes that he does not want to give away his tricycle. The tricycle is hidden from all the buyers until a little girl comes and falls in love with it. In the end, the pig realizes how happy the tricycle will make the little girl so decides to sell it to her and use the money to buy a new bicycle for himself!
Bilingual books such as Adios, tricycle are excellent reads for children. In this book, the struggle of growing up but not wanting to let go of things cherished at a younger age is relatable for children. The illustrations of many different animals allow younger readers to understand and enjoy the story, while the combination of English and Spanish provide more advanced readers a challenge. This book helps children understand that getting older provides opportunities to things not accessible when they were younger, like earning money to buy a new bicycle! I would recommend this book to children ages 6 years and older. There is a glossary and a pronunciation guide on the final page for the Spanish words. (KD)
Zulema and the witch owl. Zulema y la bruja lechuza. Garza, Xavier. Arte Público Press (Piñata Books), 2009. [email protected], (713-743-2998). 32pp. $15.95. ISBN 978-1-55885-515-1. Illustrated by Xavier Garza.
Based on Mexican-American folklore, Zulema and the witch owl teaches valuable lessons about respecting elders and being kind to others. It follows the meanest little girl in the world, Zulema Ortiz, who learns these lessons when her 90-year old grandmother comes to visit and warns Zulema about the witch owl that snatches up mean children. Zulema does not believe in the old folklore until she finds herself face to face with the giant owl and promises to change her ways. Children ages 5-10 will enjoy both the colorful illustrations and the suspenseful plot. In this bilingual book, Xavier Garza transforms an old Mexican-American folklore into a modern day story, teaching an important lesson while retaining his Mexican cultural influence.
The last doll. La última muñeca. Gonzales, Diane Bertrand. Arte Publico Press, 2009. [email protected], (713-743-2998). 29pp. $7.95. ISBN 978-1-55885-291-4. Illustrated by Anthony Accardo.
The Last Doll was written by Diane Gonzales. It is a precious book about Sarita, the last doll in a children’s toy store. Sarita remained in the same spot on her shelf for a long time, where she became very afraid of being alone; consequently, she did not want to be the last doll sold. One day her luck changed when a man with a black mustache came to the toy store. He walked straight to Sarita and said to her, “You are perfect, you are going to be the last doll for my goddaughter”. The man, Pablo, gave Sarita to Teresa, his goddaughter, for her quinceañera. Sarita felt special because she was off the shelf and in the loving arms of Teresa! Teresa liked Sarita a lot and said to her, “You are my last doll. You will always stay with me, even as I grow into a woman. I love you.” At this moment Sarita was very happy to be the last doll.
The last doll has great illustrations and the feelings of love and family that are prominent throughout the story create a heartwarming plot. There are not only qualities to intrigue children in its pages, but also moral qualities like patience, maturity and love. Although it is more in the romantic genre, I would recommend this book for children between six and twelve years of age.
(MH)

This book teaches the lesson that we should help out with the chores around the house. Mama wakes Roberto with a kiss and asks him to clean his room. He responds that he cannot clean his room because the closet monster will grab him and take him away forever. Mama says that she has no time for monsters and again tells Roberto to clean his room. Mama then asks Roberto to wipe the table and sweep the floor. Both times, Roberto says that the monsters will take him away, but Mama still has no time for monsters. Roberto then asks Mama to read him a story while she is mopping, but she says that the work monster will come and take her away forever; but if Roberto helps her, he will not come. Roberto helps his mother, and then she finally reads him a story.
(LH)

To the delight of Gabriela and Diego, their family receives a new pet, a dog named Sophie. The children have wanted a dog very badly and they are excited to teach her tricks. They teach Sophie tricks by rewarding her with Mrs. Domínguez’s tortillas. After eating too many tortillas, Sophie feels sick, but she soon begins to feel better. In this way, the family learns that eating too many tortillas is not healthy for dogs. The vocabulary used in the story is advanced but not too challenging. The message is important because many kids today want pets but do not realize the responsibilities that come along with them, or how to provide them with proper care.
