La Fiesta para Papá Luis is a fictional children’s book that portrays a birthday party for Papá Luis. The story begins when the family brings in the piñata, the children then fill it, and the events unfold chronologically from there. Numerous party activities ensue. From making a cake to a visit from a clown, everyone has a very fun day. Diane Bertrand uses a different technique in which she repeats the past events while proceeding to describe the new ones. Alejandro Galindo uses very colorful and fun pictures to describe the passing events, tying in the new events with the past events. The illustrations are also interesting in that they are not exact forms of humans; at one point one of the characters does not even have a nose. The book conveys the similarities in various Hispanic cultures with that of American cultures through the use of English language as well as the Spanish language. The story itself represents traditional festivities within large families, specifically on birthdays. It is a very entertaining book that can be beneficial to young children attempting to learn basic principals of English or Spanish. (KR)

The dead family Diaz is an English text that describes a holiday in the Mexican culture: The Day of the Dead. Written for children, this book describes one family’s typical celebration of this special day—but with a twist! Instead of telling this story from the living’s perspective, this tale is told by one of the dead! This book recounts Angelito’s journey to the land of the living, where he meets a friendly boy around his age; though initially frightened by their differences, both boys learn to befriend each other during a time of celebration. This book includes full-page illustrations and uses clever wordplay and humor to create a light, fun read. There is also a section at the back that briefly describes The Day of the Dead. The dead family Diaz works great to quell the fears associated with this holiday, while at the same time promoting friendship and cultural awareness! (ET)

Gossie/Gansi is a book written for young children around the ages of 1-4. This is a very simple book that is written in both Spanish and English. It would be a great tool to use if one wants to expose a child to both Spanish and English from a young age. This book tells the story of a duck, or a gosling, who loves to wear her bright red boots. She wears them every day for many different situations. She wears them in all kinds of weather, even rain and snow. She wears her boots for almost everything she does. Then one day she discovers that her boots are gone. She looks everywhere for them but cannot find them. She is incredibly sad. Eventually, she sees another gosling, Gertie, walking in her boots! Gertie loves to wear the bright red boots too. In the end, Gansi shares her boots, so they each have one to wear every day. Not only is the story a good introduction to simple words in both English and Spanish, but it helps teach the child that sharing is good. Overall, I would recommend this book to young children. (IG)
(IG)

Many things change over the years apart, but the girls remain close. Their friendship follows them from the summers at Pierpoint, and they remain close friends throughout their lives. Even though they end up spread across the globe, the bonds of their friendship have no limits. This is a great coming-of-age novel that has some adults themes, such a sexual awakening, fascism, and abortion. The story is told from the three points of view of the girls. This gives the novel a unique perspective and voice. (MK)

Es hora de dormir/Time for bed is a lovely bedtime story that will certainly put anyone in a relaxed mood. Each verse makes use of a different animal saying goodnight in their own way to their adored child, from the woods and the field to the nest and the bed. This book is written in both Spanish and English. The writing is simple yet heart-warming. The lack of exact translation acts to preserve a gentle, easy-flowing rhyme that will easily put any young child to sleep with a peaceful smile on his face. However, the odd verse has a near identical translation that still rhymes, creating a beautiful bedtime poem. Both little ones and their parents will love this bedtime story. Dyer’s illustrations are calming and pretty companions to each page that accompany each verse perfectly. (BF)

Day and Night is an educational book that describes the difference between day and night. It starts with the question, “Why does the cycle of days and nights happen?” The book states that the earth spins, and there is always one side that faces the sun, and one side that faces away from it. It explains that while the side we are on faces away from the sun, it is night, and that as our side spins closer to the sun, we see the sunrise. It says that as our side spins further from the sun, we see the sunset, and that the cycle continues endlessly. There are photos on each page that show what the earth and sky look like during each part of the cycle, and the book includes a glossary and an index. The book is meant for beginning readers and very young children. (KS)

In addition, there is an index, diagrams, and important facts about water. I like this book because it is very simple, especially for children. Also in this series, there are similar books about day and night, the night sky, seasons, hibernation, and migration. I recommend these books for parents and teachers that want to teach about nature. Silverman, Buffy. 2013. Sabes algo sobre anfibios? Lerner Publishing Group (ediciones Lerner). [email protected], (800-328-4929). 32 pp. $18.95. ISBN 978-0-9333-7.
This excitingly informational and cleverly organized book expresses a simple explanation of how the three main types of amphibians develop and how they survive in the wild. These three types include: frogs, salamanders, and toads. The book begins with observing the fascinating metamorphosis of tadpoles, specifically how they change as they grow. Once an amphibian has reached adulthood, it is ready to lay eggs, but not without encountering danger. Fish, birds, snakes, turtles and insects all eat eggs, so while amphibians will lay up to thousands of eggs at once, not all of them will survive the threat that is the circle of life. The lucky eggs that do make it, however, undergo an amazing journey of transformation. Tadpoles are born underwater with gills, no appendages, and eat aquatic plants. As they grow, their gills close up and lungs are developed in order to breathe air, they grow front and back legs, and their tongues grow long and sticky in order to catch insects. All of these changes are a part of the wondrous cycle known as metamorphosis. As adults, amphibians must be able to protect themselves; many accomplish this by living under branches or digging wells. Some are able to mix in with their environment by utilizing their camouflage. The most beautiful amphibians are actually the most dangerous and should not be tampered with, for their skin is protected by poisonous venom. This book provides the reader with a simple lesson of amphibians by using creative designs and expressive language. It is the perfect informational book for children who love to learn. (IG)
(IG)
Weiner, Eric. 2012. Adaptado por Laura Driscoll. Bailando al rescate. Simon and Schuster (Libros Para Niños). [email protected], (800-223-2336). 24pp. $3.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-3983-2. Ilustrado por Dave Aikins.
Bailando al rescate is a wonderful book for children of all ages to hear and for children aged six or seven to begin to read. The book does not have an English translation but can be easily understood by Spanish students at an intermediate level. The story follows Dora, Boots, and Swiper through their journey to release Swiper from being trapped in a magical bottle. Bailando al rescate is a fun, interactive book for children because there are directions for each dance that the friends learn along their journey, and children are asked to dance with them to help in reaching their goal. The following are important messages that are taught by this story: be careful when interacting with strangers and do not trust them, like the dancing elf; help everyone, even if they do bad things at times, like Swiper who often steals things; be merry and dance, and you will be able to help others. These lessons could be emphasized in the classroom along with reading and dancing with the characters. This would work well to attract the attention of children who are between the ages of two and six especially. (EH)
(EH)
Wood, Audrey. Translated by Alma FlorAda and F. Isabel Campoy. 1984, 2012. The napping house. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. [email protected], (800-597-6127) 32pp. $6.99. ISBN 978-0-547-71920-7. Illustrated by Don Wood.
The Napping House is a fun, bilingual children’s book about a house in which everybody sleeps. It tells a story about a cozy bed with many napping people and animals, until a flea bites a mouse and causes a chain reaction that wakes up everybody. The story is very predictable but amusing, and it is easy to read. Its plot lacks depth, but it is a great book for preschoolers and children in kindergarten or first grade. This could be a great book for teaching cause-and-effect or Spanish vocabulary. In addition it includes many prepositions and adjectives, so one could also use it to teach these parts of speech. This story is bilingual, which makes it a great option for English or Spanish language-learners. It also includes delightful illustrations that the children will enjoy. (RL)
(RL)
