They offer to perform in exchange for just one itsy bitsy little bite each. The message of the book is ambiguous, but the illustrations are appropriately colorful for Day of the Dead celebrations.

Los esqueletos ofrecen hacer un show maravilloso a cambio de sólo una mordidita chiquitita cada uno. A nice story for children of all ages.

El asombroso pez acuarela es un libro bilingüe en español e inglés sobre dos peces que comparten sus imaginaciones a través de la pintura. Cada pez desea un mundo fuera de sus peceras - por eso el libro comienza sin color y se vuelve más colorido cuando los sueños están compartidos. Activities related to collecting and reusing materials are presented at the end of the book. Available in English and as an English/Spanish bilingual reader.

Written in both English and Spanish, this book is meant to be an inspiration how no dream is impossible with the right ingredients. However, the book lacks excitement in both the text and illustrations. A great life story.

Una historia directa sobre el sueño y el camino del autor para ser un astronauta. Su receta para el éxito: nombra su meta, hace un plan, trabaja duro, y nunca se rinde. Escrito en inglés y español, este libro se supone que es una inspiración que cualquier sueño es posible con los ingredientes necesarios. Pero, al libro le falta entusiasmo en el texto como las ilustraciones. Una historia buena de una vida. (HHA)

With a little encouragement from famous Haitian and Dominican artists, Sofi learns she can be an artist, too! Although the impetus for the story feels contrived, the colorful illustrations and overall message of persistence are appropriate for children. Information at the end of the book explains the places and people featured in the story. An English/Spanish bilingual book.

Con un poco de ánimo de artistas famosos de Hispaniola, Sofi aprende que ¡puede ser una artista también! Aunque el impulso para la historia parece artificial, las ilustraciones coloridas y el mensaje de perseverancia son apropriadas para niños. Hay información al final del libro sobre los lugares y las personas en la historia. Un libro bilingüe de inglés y español. (HHA)

 

Davis, Jacqueline. 2019.  El Delito De La Limonada. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH Books for young readers). 192pp.  $16.99. ISBN 978-1-32-860608-2. Translated by Aurora Humaran.

This ghost translation of the second installment of the popular five-book series reads well enough, and young adult Spanish readers will profit from this “who done it” and its attendant judicial lessons, based on the USA legal system. As a moral conundrum—justice versus forgiveness, rumor and gut feeling versus evidence—the story also provides a nuanced examination of the human heart’s capacity to transcend justice and logic.The unnamed translator makes many unfortunate decisions robbing reader’s need for language which evokes, touches, or otherwise signifies a style aware of the musicality of language, a sense of place, and even correctness. In short, the translation is as generic as the ghost translation indicates. For example, the idiomatic “lo siento en mis huesos,” (I feel it in my bones), while altogether appropriate in English, is an Anglicism in Spanish. The proper expression of this sentiment is best expressed by “me huele a “(it smells of . . .). If the former phrase is the choice, then it should read “lo siento en los huesos,” as the possessive is never used with regard to one’s body parts. Elsewhere, the literal translation to “juegos cortos de fútbol y basquetbol” (short games of soccer and basketball), could read in Spanish “partiditos de futbol y basquetbol”; furthermore, the verb “fanfullar” is used for “mumble”, and “habladurias” for “rumors”, where the more current “balbucear” would do in the former, and “chismes or rumores” would serve well in the latter. In short, this Spanish rendition lacks the stylistic flair of a translator/artist. (RRR)

This distinctly mexican american translation works well for Spanish readers the world over, as Baeza Ventura has taken care to remain faithful to latin-american standard spanish, while retaining the northern mexican and texan flavor of the language; save for a few errors--creya should be “crea” on page five, for example, and “peseta” for quarter (C. 4), which denotes a fifty cent piece, and not a quarter--the translation will work well for young adults and any one interested in the horror/humor genre writer Zavier Garza has honed to very entertaining ends while instructing or informing readers regarding mexican american culture and its moorings in latin-american and Spanish cultures.Will Vincent, along with BFF’s Michelle and Bobby, solve the mystery of the disappearing dogs since Mr Calaveras (Mr. Skulls) moved in next door? Could he be the mythical chupacabras, the blood sucking vampire-like monster praying on neighborhood pets? With a nice balance between scary and fun for young readers, this story may delight young and old alike. (RRR)
