Studying political science means you’ll examine the nature of power and governments while building skills in analysis, research, and communication.
As a political science major/minor, you’ll:
- Find, evaluate, and use reliable sources of information to analyze political phenomena in the United States and globally
- Apply a wide range of research methods to identify and create knowledge
- Effectively communicate political ideas and beliefs to scholarly audiences
- Consider the implications of political issues from diverse perspectives
Mock Trial
Participating in Luther’s mock trial team is an engaging way to learn about the legal system and careers within it. It helps you develop persuasive argumentation skills, public speaking skills, teamwork abilities, and self-confidence.
The Political Science Department’s mock trial team participates in competitions sanctioned by the American Mock Trial Association. Since 1993, Professor Michael Engelhardt has coached the team with assistance from Decorah attorney Jim Burns of the Miller, Pearson, Burns, Beatty, and Cowie Law Firm.
Pre-Law Program
Luther’s liberal arts education helps develop analytical skills needed in the practice of law. Many alumni with political science majors have earned law degrees.
Model UN
Twenty-three students from Luther College Model U.N. attended the conference, with some representing Malta and others representing Niger. Luther College senior Cassandra Norton won an award at the American Model United Nations (AMUN) Conference in Chicago.
Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society
Luther College Political Science Department has established a chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society to recognize Luther students. The first induction ceremony took place in 2011.
Facilities
The majority of political science classes take place in Koren Hall, dedicated in 1921 and named in honor of Ulrik Vilhelm Koren (1826-1910), one of the founders and leaders of Luther College.
