Civic Sustainability Initiative

Partnering with our community to strengthen the "world house" we share.

We have inherited a large house, a great ‘world house’ in which we have to live together—black and white, Easterner and Westerner, Gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Moslem and Hindu—a family unduly separated in ideas, culture and interest, who, because we can never again live apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace.

 --Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Luther College is seen for its commitment to environmental sustainability by visible symbols such as our wind turbine and solar fields. With the Civic Sustainability Initiative, we are pleased to partner with individuals and organizations on campus and in Decorah to consider how we might sustain the "world house" we share.

-- President Jenifer K. Ward

In response to President Ward’s call to action, the Civic Sustainability Initiative seeks partnerships between campus and the Decorah  community in offering a series of forums during the academic year, designed to build connections, foster conversation, and inspire actions toward a more just and livable world. Using a variety of formats from small group discussion and book groups, to guest speakers and panelists, we encourage productive, civil dialogue on all topics and welcome your ideas.
