What are our ethical responsibilities toward people who migrate? How does immigration affect a sense of identity—as individuals, as communities, as nationals? To explore these complex questions, students in a January Term Paideia 450 course made a classroom of regional communities.
An Iraq War veteran, a survivor of domestic abuse and an evacuee from Hurricane Katrina share their stories of survival and shine a light on what it's like living with and recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder in the documentary "Buried Above Ground." Savannah Hartman, Luther College senior, worked for the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging in Waterloo, Iowa, for her summer internship. Specifically, she worked in the Elder Abuse Awareness and Prevention program. The daughter of Jeff and Jen Hartman of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Hartman graduated from Cedar Falls High School. She plans to graduate from Luther in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in social work.
Sthela Gun Holly Hanitrinirina, Luther College junior, was the Research and Evaluation intern for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Global Mission unit in Chicago, Illinois. She facilitated conversations on gender justice within the Global Mission unit, which will contribute to the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.

Over the course of the last 10 years, Decorah and other communities across northeastern Iowa have experienced multiple floods characterized as 100-year floods. As the effects of climate change intensify, events like these are only expected to increase. Halina Pyzdrowski, Luther College senior of Minnetonka, Minnesota, is researching flood resilience in the Upper Iowa Watershed for her summer research project at the college.
