Sesquicentennial convocation Feb. 3
Spring convocation, to be held Thursday, Feb. 3 at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL, will also be Luther's sesquicentennial kick-off celebration. The president of the University of Oslo, Ole Petter Ottersen, will speak on "Preparing Leaders for a New Global Environment: The Role of the University." Many descendants of Luther's founders will be in attendance and Dean Craft's sesquicentennial hymn, "Invocation," will be premiered. The entire community is encouraged to attend.
Faculty/staff buffet: revisited
Remember the faculty/staff buffet in Peace Dining Room? It is making a one-day return in honor of the sesquicentennial kick-off Convocation. Stop by between noon and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 for the "Luther Blue Plate Special" for $5.
Magazine seeks senior profile suggestions
The Luther Alumni Magazine staff seeks help in compiling a list of Class of 2011 members to profile in a future issue. We want to hear about students who have excelled academically, but we'd also like to learn of students who have been exceptional in contributions outside the classroom or are embarking on unique or interesting careers. U Car Share hits Luther campus
Luther College and U Car Share are launching the first U Car Share service in Iowa. The new partnership will provide Luther students, faculty and staff as well as community members access to U Car Share's car-sharing service. Beginning Jan. 20, U Car Share will provide students, faculty and staff as well as Decorah community members with another transportation option. Sign up online at http://www.ucarshare.com.

Nobel Peace Prize Forum registration
Luther will host the 23rd annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum March 4-5. "Striving for Peace: Courage to Act," will focus on the importance of courageous action in the work of peacemaking. Luther has invited as keynote speaker the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, President Barack Obama. Confirmed keynote speakers include Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi and Eboo Patel, leader in the global interfaith youth movement.

Memorial information for Nabby
Memorial donations for Nabby Baffour-Awuah will be sent to Nabby's family to assist with travel costs and other expenses. Flexible Spending Account reminder
The 2010 prescription debit cards expired Dec. 31. 2011 prescription debit cards are being mailed to employees that checked the enrollment form request. Employees may request a 2011 prescription debit card any time during the year. Call Human Resources, 387-1134 with questions.
IRS guidelines for debit cards
The Internal Revenue Service issued new guidance allowing the continued use of health flexible spending arrangement and health reimbursement arrangement debit cards for the purchase of prescribed over-the-counter medicines and drugs.
Starting Jan. 16, you may continue to use an FSA or HRA debit card to purchase over-the-counter medicines or drugs, so long as you obtain a prescription for the medicine or drug, the prescription is presented to the pharmacist, and the medication is dispensed by the pharmacist and given an Rx number.

Employee withholding changes for 2011
The employee share of FICA withholding has been reduced by two percent, from 6.2 to 4.2 percent. The Medicare withholding remains the same at 1.45 percent. The employer-matching share remains the same at 6.2 percent and 1.45 percent respectively. Complete information can be found at irs.gov in Notice 1036.
In addition, Federal withholding tax tables have changed for 2011. Call the payroll office, 387-1135, if you would like to review your withholding information.

Self-guided art tour through March 18
As part of Luther's sesquicentennial celebration, the college will host a self-guided art tour Jan. 10-March 18. Luther's first 150 years will be on display through portraits of individuals significant to the school's history.
The self-guided tour begins in Preus Library and travels through several other locations on the Luther campus including the CFL, Jenson-Noble and Koren.
Luther College Woman's Club Jan. 18
Mary Hull Mohr, emerita professor of English, will present the first program of the year to the Luther College Woman's Club Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 1:45 p.m. Mohr's presentation is "The Beginnings of LCWC: A Chapter in Luther's Sesquicentennial Celebration." The group will also share a musical program presented by Spencer Martin, associate professor of music, and Miko Kominami, adjunct faculty in music. The LCWC meets in Peace Dining Room.
Oneota Film Festival Jan. 21-23
Looking for something to do in January? The second annual Oneota Film Festival is coming to Luther's campus Jan. 21-23. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Films that pertain to adventure, eco travel, local and student films, food/agriculture, social justice and the environment will be showing in Valders 206, Olin 102 and the CRH. Brandt Open Mic Bar Jan. 22

Nordic Choir tour homecoming concert
Nordic Choir will perform a tour homecoming concert Tuesday, Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. The performance by the 64-member Nordic Choir is open to the public with no charge for admission.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Martin Klammer co-authored a book with South African freedom movement activist Blanche La Guma. The book, titled "In the Dark with My Dress on Fire: My Life in Cape Town, London, Havana and Home Again," was released in South Africa Nov. 25. Klammer was joined at a sold-out book launch event by La Guma and guest speaker Albie Sachs, a former Constitutional Court Judge of South Africa.
John Goodin's book, "Telemann for Mandolin: 72 Compositions Chosen from the Works of Georg Philipp Telemann, Arranged for Solo Mandolin" has recently been published under the Bill's Music Shelf imprint of Mel Bay Publications.
Richard G. Cole, emeritus professor of history, has a short article: "The Enlightenment: We were wrong about the woods" published in the annual holiday issue of WOODLANDS AND PRAIRIES magazine, winter 2010-11.
Richard Tirk performed as principal trumpet in the Wichita Grand Opera's production of "Madama Butterfly" by Puccini on Jan. 8.

Philip Freeman's biography "Alexander the Great" received praise in a recent Wall Street Journal review. Reviewer Tom Holland says "Here, in vivid and exciting detail, are all the familiar highlights of Alexander's career: the battles, the tempestuous relationships, the dazzling ambitions, the mysterious death in Babylon. Mr. Freeman's ambition, he tells us in his introduction, was 'to write a biography of Alexander that is first and foremost a story.' It is one he splendidly fulfills." SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE
Wrestling lost to no. 1 Wartburg Jan. 14, 3-45. Kevin Bokoski '11 defeated the no. 3 wrestler in the nation at 141, 4-3. The Norse placed eighth of 10 teams at the Cornell Matman Invitational Jan. 15, Cody Orr '14, 141, and Taylor Mansfield '11, 285, placed fourth.
Women's basketball lost to Simpson Jan. 15, 36-55. The Norse were led by Sam Jewell '11 who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Men's basketball defeated Simpson, 57-45. Dane Larson '12 and Tim Merritt '12 led the Norse scoring with 16 and 10 points respectively.

McElroy Fellowships
Graduating seniors intending to pursue a Ph.D. in any field are eligible to be nominated for a McElroy Fellowship, worth a $30,000 stipend over a three-year period. Luther may nominate only one candidate, but only 10 colleges may submit nominees for the two annual awards. Paper and personal care items drive
Luther's men's basketball team is assisting Northeast Iowa RSVP in conducting a paper and personal care items drive. The campaign is launched in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his vision of making this country a better place to live. Drop-off boxes are in the Regents Center south lobby, by the SPOs in the Union, in Main by the Paideia office, and in the service centers for Towers, Brandt, Ylvisaker, Olson, Larsen and Farwell. Winter soccer skills clinic
The Luther soccer programs will host a three-day soccer skills clinic for youth age 7-14. Luther soccer coaches will run the clinics Sundays, Jan. 30, Feb. 6 and 13, from 1-2:30 p.m. The first two sessions focus on improvement of players' technical skills. The final session is a 3v3 tournament incorporating all aspects of the game. The clinic will be held in Luther's SRC. Cost is $50. Register by Jan. 27.
