Thank you

Thank you to the campus—especially our campus programming staff, security, dining services, facilities and grounds crew—for helping facilitate the send-off for the members of the 322nd Engineer Company who are heading to Afghanistan. The CFL provided a great venue for the ceremony and thanks to Sodexo, the soldiers and their families were served a nice meal in our cafeteria. I'm proud Luther could extend its signature hospitality in this important way.

Comprehensive fee set

The Board of Regents has approved increasing the 2011-12 comprehensive fee from $38,930 to $40,585 (tuition-$34,735; room-$2,780; board-$3,070).

Sesquicentennial royal visit

Luther College is pleased to announce that the King and Queen of Norway hope to visit the Luther campus Thursday, Oct. 13. The college will receive final confirmation in May, when the Royal Palace in Oslo makes a formal announcement of the King and Queen's Midwest visit.

Strategic plan progress report

A progress report on Luther's current strategic plan, "Transformed by the Journey," is available to view on Katie. The plan was launched in 2008 and is meant to guide college decision making through 2012. To view the report, go to the Office of the President folder on Katie and click on the "Luther-President" course.

Winter Board of Regents meeting

The Regents will meet on campus Feb. 11-12. They will learn about Task Group 150's work, discuss Luther's financial position, act on tenure recommendations and eat lunch with students in the cafeteria. The Board's business meeting, held Friday, Feb. 11, at 4:15 p.m. in the Loyalty Board Room, is open to interested members of the campus community. Pre-meeting materials can be viewed at http://katie.luther.edu. Look for the Board of Regents site under the "my courses" section on the left hand side of the page. A sub-folder contains February 2011 documents.

Health plan incentive credit

The Luther health plan offers incentive credit to employees to encourage examination and self-auditing of eligible medical bills to ensure amount billed by provider accurately reflects services/supplies received by employee or dependent. When employee's self-audit results in elimination/reduction of charges, 25 percent of amount eliminated or reduced will be paid to employee ($10 minimum savings) provided savings are accurately documented with a copy of incorrect bill and corrected billing showing a reduction in charges, and submitted to Human Resources. Credit payment limited to $500/calendar year.

Faculty/staff buffet: revisited

Remember the faculty/staff buffet in Peace Dining Room? It is making a one-day return in honor of the sesquicentennial kick-off Convocation. Stop by between noon and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 for the "Luther Blue Plate Special" for $5. 

Sesquicentennial convocation Feb. 3

Spring convocation, to be held Thursday, Feb. 3 at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL, will also be Luther's sesquicentennial kick-off celebration. The president of the University of Oslo, Ole Petter Ottersen, will speak on "Preparing Leaders for a New Global Environment: The Role of the University." Many descendants of Luther's founders will be in attendance and Dean Craft's sesquicentennial hymn, "Invocation," will be premiered. The entire community is encouraged to attend.

Magazine seeks senior profile suggestions

The Luther Alumni Magazine staff seeks help in compiling a list of Class of 2011 members to profile in a future issue. We want to hear about students who have excelled academically, but we'd also like to learn of students who have been exceptional in contributions outside the classroom or are embarking on unique or interesting careers. Email names and information on accomplishments/activities and post-graduation plans to Sara Friedl-Putnam at <friedlsa>.

U Car Share hits Luther campus

Luther College and U Car Share are launching the first U Car Share service in Iowa. The new partnership will provide Luther students, faculty and staff as well as community members access to U Car Share's car-sharing service. Beginning Jan. 20, U Car Share will provide students, faculty and staff as well as Decorah community members with another transportation option. Sign up online at http://www.ucarshare.com.

Nobel Peace Prize Forum registration

Luther will host the 23rd annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum March 4-5. "Striving for Peace: Courage to Act," will focus on the importance of courageous action in the work of peacemaking. Luther has invited as keynote speaker the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, President Barack Obama. Confirmed keynote speakers include Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi and Eboo Patel, leader in the global interfaith youth movement.

Opera Workshop performance Jan. 25

Students in Luther's January Opera Workshop course will present "What's Da Ponte: Scenes from Mozart's Da Ponte Operas" directed by Jacob Lassetter Tuesday,
Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. in the NRH. The program includes 12 scenes from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's operas that feature libretti by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Science research poster symposium

Come to the J-term science research poster symposium Wednesday, Jan. 26, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in the Sampson-Hoffland Carlson Atrium. The symposium will include poster presentations by students from ENVS 185 Global Climate Change: Science and Society, BIO 149/249 Winter Biology, BIO 247 Subtropical and Marine Biology, and MATH 260 Elementary Number Theory. All members of the Luther community are invited to come and see the results of research projects Luther students have been undertaking during J-term on-campus and away in the Boundary Waters and Bahamas.

Message from HR: HERway Feb. 1

Winneshiek Medical Center presents HERway Conversations, a casual, educational community health talk series for women of any age. "WMC Mammography-Saving Second Base!" will be the topic of discussion Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 5:30-7 p.m. in Conference Room B on the lower level of WMC. Richard Remark, M.D., radiologist with Decorah Clinic Physicians-Mayo Health System and the WMC "home team" discuss the "why," "how" and "what if" questions many women ponder when they plan a mammogram.

Spring Convocation Feb. 3

President of the University of Oslo Ole Petter Ottersen, M.D., Ph.D., will be the featured speaker at the Luther College Spring Convocation, Thursday, Feb. 3 at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The convocation is open to the public with no charge for admission. Ottersen's convocation address, "Preparing Leaders for a New Global Environment: The Role of the University," kicks off Luther's sesquicentennial celebration which is based on the theme "Transformed by the Journey."

Faculty artist series: Martin, Kominami

Spencer Martin and Miko Kominami will perform a viola and piano recital Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. in the NRH. "Forgotten Gems for Viola and Piano" will feature selections from the duo's upcoming CD of the same name. The repertoire consists largely of pieces by lesser-known Romantic Era composers. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Remembrance gathering for Nabby

College Ministries will hold a gathering Sunday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. to remember Luther student Nabby Baffour-Awuah who died Jan. 1. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend, especially those who were gone during J-term and were not able to attend other memorial and remembrance services. The remembrance gathering will start in the CRH and move to Qualley Lounge. 

Faculty artist series: Peter Lingen

Peter Lingen will perform a faculty guitar recital Sunday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. in the NRH. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. Lingen will play classics of Brazilian guitar such as "Sons de Carilhões" by João Guimarães and "Preludes" by Heitor Villa-Lobos. The program also features works from several contemporary composers who are fluent in classical and pop/jazz styles including Marco Pereira, Paulo Bellinati and James McGuire.

CSS: Carrie Newcomer Feb.11

Folk singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer will perform Friday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets are on sale through the Luther Box Office, 387-1357. The first Center Stage event of 2011, Newcomer's performance connects with Luther's sesquicentennial, inviting community members to explore the year's celebrated theme, "Transformed by the Journey." Self-guided art tour through March 18

As part of Luther's sesquicentennial celebration, the college will host a self-guided art tour Jan. 10-March 18. Luther's first 150 years will be on display through portraits of individuals significant to the school's history. The tour begins in Preus Library.

Nordic Choir tour homecoming concert

Nordic Choir will perform a tour homecoming concert Tuesday, Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. The performance by the 64-member Nordic Choir is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Women's basketball lost to Simpson Jan. 22, 58-118. Sam Jewell '11 tallied 26 points, going 18 of 23 from the foul line to tie the single game school record.

Men's basketball defeated Simpson, 77-65. Five Norse posted double digits, Nnamdi Okolue '11, 15, Dane Larson '12, 14, Jacy Dillahunty '11, 12, Tim Merritt '12, 11, and Tyler Wedemeier '13, 11.

McElroy Fellowships

Graduating seniors intending to pursue a Ph.D. in any field are eligible to be nominated for a McElroy Fellowship, worth a $30,000 stipend over a three-year period. Luther may nominate only one candidate, but only 10 colleges may submit nominees for the two annual awards. Seeking volunteers for 'History Walk'

In celebration of the sesquicentennial, Kristen Underwood seeks faculty, staff and students to portray people from Luther's past in a "History Walk," a series of short scenes to be staged around campus. Participants can expect 3-4 rehearsals in April; the opening performance is Saturday, May 7. Subsequent performances will be offered in the summer and fall.
