Meeting with President Torgerson

Faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to attend either an 8:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. meeting with President Torgerson Thursday, Feb. 17 in the CRH. The President will provide an update on Task Group 150 discussions and a recap of the February Board of Regents meeting.  The Feb. 17 meeting replaces the Feb. 23-24 staff meetings.

DCI report regarding Nabby's death

The Decorah Police Department has released the Iowa DCI report on the cause of death for Luther student Nabby Baffour-Awuah, who died Jan. 1. The report was sent via email to all Luther students, faculty and staff on the afternoon of Feb. 14. If you have questions or concerns regarding the report please direct them to Jerry Johnson, 387-1565 or <johnsjer>.

Tenure and promotion announcement

At their meeting Saturday, the Board of Regents approved tenure and President Torgerson announced promotions for the following faculty members:

'Using Dropbox' introduction Feb. 17

"Using Dropbox: An Introduction to Saving and Syncing Files in the Cloud" will be Thursday, Feb. 17, 3-4 p.m., in the Borlaug Room in the Union. This LIS Training session will introduce Dropbox, an online service that provides automatic file backup and synchronization between multiple computers. Learn how to work on the same files at the office and at home without needing to lug a laptop or flash drive. To sign up, visit http://lis.luther.edu/node/5317.

Mac computers and Luther W2s

The Payroll Office has just learned that faculty and staff who printed their W2s using a Mac computer may have a W2 that does not have Box 13 correctly marked. In order to have the correct format, a PC has to be used. Contact the Payroll office, 387-1135 with questions.

Flu shots available at Health Service

The flu season is upon us. If you have not had your flu shot, come to Health Service Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Price is $10 for students, $20 for faculty and staff.

Event funding available

Got art? Planning to bring a speaker, artist, musician or performer to Luther in the near future? The Lectures and Fine Arts committee has limited funding still available for guests visiting Luther for this fiscal year. See: https://www2.luther.edu/programming/lfa/ for more details. Note: applications for the next fiscal year will be accepted the second Friday after spring break. Some changes to the funding guidelines will be made for the next year. Changes will be discussed by LFA Committee representatives at upcoming divisional meetings.

Employee blood screenings

Health Service will offer employee blood screenings for employees and their spouses on March 24, April 21 and May 5. Call Health Service, 387-1045, to schedule an appointment. Price is $35 for regular lab screenings and $40 for the PSA. This is an uneven year so employees will not be reimbursed for blood screenings.

Alumnus art exhibit on display

The photography of Doug Knutson '84, is on display through March 18 in the upper level of the CFL. The exhibit is on display throughout Luther's Black History Month Conference and the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Forum. It consists of portraits of notable black Americans and Nobel Prize laureates. There will be a gallery reception Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. in conjunction with the Black History Conference.

Luther College Woman's Club Feb. 15

Robert Shedinger will present the February program to the Luther College Woman's Club Tuesday, Feb.15 at 1:45 p.m. Shedinger's presentation is "Was Jesus a Muslim? Trancending the Stereotypes of American Muslims." Music will be provided by members of the Luther musical community. The LCWC meets in Peace Dining Room.

Religion Forum Series lecture Feb. 15

Robert Shedinger will present the Luther Religion Forum Series lecture Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in Olin 102. The forum will be based on Shedinger's lecture titled "Is Islam a Religion? Religion, Politics and Islamic Revivalism in America."

Pack the Stands Night Feb. 16

The Luther community is invited to Luther women's basketball's last home game of the season Wednesday, Feb. 16. SAAC and Happy Joe's are partnering to sponsor Norse Pack the Stands Night. The basketball game will begin at 6 p.m. Free pizza and games with prizes at halftime.

'Tribute to Duke Ellington'

Luther Jazz Orchestra will present a "Tribute to Duke Ellington" Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission and is in conjunction with the Edward (Duke) Ellington Symposium of the annual Midwest Black History Conference. The Jazz Orchestra will perform instrumental and vocal selections composed and arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.

Midwest Black History Conference

Jazz workshops, presentations and performances will rock Luther Feb. 16-17 when the college hosts the eighth annual Midwest Black History Conference. The conference, "An Edward 'Duke' Ellington Symposium," celebrates the life and music of Ellington. Featured presenters include six-time Grammy nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon. Freelon's presentation culminates with her Center Stage Series performance "Dreaming of the Duke," Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m.

Center Stage Dinner Series

Dine with Luther Catering before the Nneena Freelon performance Thursday, Feb. 17. Service begins at 5:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. Serving bistro salad drizzled with a housemade dijon vinaigrette, maple glazed salmon served on a roasted vegetable nest, herbed focaccia bread with dipping oil, finished with dark and white chocolate dipped strawberries. CSS: Nnenna Freelon Feb. 17

World-renowned jazz singer Nnenna Freelon will perform Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets are $23, $21 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, available at the Box Office, 387-1357. Discounted tickets are available for Black History Month Conference participants. Alumna art exhibit on display Feb. 17

Luther '70 alumna and 1995 Distinguished Service Award recipient Paula Berg Owen will exhibit her work Feb. 17-April 6 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery. An artist's reception will be held Monday, Feb. 21 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Gallery. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission. Owen's exhibit is part of the 2011 series featuring select alumni artists as part of Luther's Sesquicentennial.

SAC presents: Dynamic Duo

The Dynamic Duo, a slam-poetry performance pair, will perform at Luther Friday, Feb. 18, 9 p.m. at Marty's. Tickets are $10, available at the door or the Box Office, 387-1357. The performance is sponsored by the SAC Diversity and Spotlight committees. The dynamic team of Panama Soweto and Ken Arkind will slam everything from video games and super heroes to racial inequality and social injustice. 

'The Vagina Monologues' Feb. 18-20

Luther V-day 2011 will present a benefit production of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" Feb. 18-20 to raise awareness to stop violence against women and girls. Performances are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in Storre Theatre.

Sesquicentennial visitor series: Rahfaldt

Michal Rahfaldt '97, is on campus through Feb. 19 as part of Luther's Sesquicentennial Visitor Series. Rahfaldt is the director of the Children's Radio Foundation in Cape Town, South Africa. He has taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Cape Town, along with serving in several capacities with UNICEF in Cape Town and Zambia. His visit is sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Life and Sense of Vocation.

Faculty Artist Series: Travers

Tarn Travers, visiting instructor in music, will perform a faculty artist series recital Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The violin performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Travers will perform Bach's Chaconne for solo violin, Beethoven's C Minor Sonata for violin and piano, Ramiro Cortes' Duo for violin and piano, and the Ravel's Sonata for violin and cello.

Faculty Artist Series: Ware

Soprano Rachel Ware, alumni guest lecturer in music, will perform a faculty artist series recital Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. Ware will be accompanied by Jessica Paul, and the performance will feature clarinetist Michael Chesher.

Gospel Service Feb. 20

Luther College Ministries will host the annual Black History Month Gospel Service Sunday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The college extends an invitation to the community to attend the service, which is scheduled in conjunction with Luther's eighth annual Black History Month Conference.

Guest preacher will be the Rev. Albert Starr Jr., director for African Descent Ministries for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

'We the People' Feb. 22

Luther will host Theaterworks USA's production of "We the People" Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. "We the People" is an all-new musical revue that brings American civics lessons to life and promises to make social studies exciting and accessible. 'Ecological Restoration' lecture Feb. 22

Eric Baack and Beth Lynch will present a Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. The lecture, "Ecological Restoration: Maintaining Spaces for the Wild," will explore the ecological and ethical dilemmas involved with restoration and how this form of service develops connection to place and sustains hope in a time of ecological crisis.

Community mapping forum invite-DATE CHANGED

The Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative invites the Luther community to a community mapping forum. Bring your great ideas and questions to help support an active community. Discussion about the walkable and bikable future of Decorah will be Tuesday, March 8, 7 p.m. at Decorah's City Hall.

Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Lecture

Jack Goldstone, a globally acclaimed authority on regional conflicts, will present Luther College's Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Lecture Thursday, Feb. 24 at
7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall.

Goldstone, whose work on issues such as social movements, revolutions and international politics has won him global acclaim and tens of thousands of dollars in research grants, will present the lecture titled "Global Trends in the Quality of Governance and Democracy."

Philosophy Colloquium Feb. 25

Andrew Dilts, assistant professor of social sciences at the University of Chicago, presents "How Liberalism Succeeds by Failing the Felon" Friday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. in Olin 102.

Faculty Artist Series: Ashcraft

Eric Ashcraft will perform a faculty voice recital Friday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the NRH. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The evening will feature pieces from various operas, including "Tosca" by Puccini, "La Forza del Destino" by Verdi and "Carmen" by Georges Bizet. Jessica Paul, piano, will accompany Ashcraft. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

William Craft and Keith Christensen were part of the "Fundraising and the CAO" panel presentation at the Council of Independent Colleges 2010 Institute for Chief Academic Officers and Chief Financial Officers, held Nov. 6-9 in Williamsburg, Va. The goal of the 2010 Institute for CAOs and CFOs was to strengthen their partnership and help them better understand each other's perspectives on campus priorities.

Luther has been awarded a $169,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to purchase a 300 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer for Luther's chemistry department. Bradley Chamberlain will serve as project director, overseeing the implementation of the new NMR spectrometer. The spectrometer will be installed this summer.   

Richard Tirk presented masterclasses and performed recitals on the campuses of University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of Alabama and Montevallo University. 

Kim Powell had "Framing Islam: An analysis of U.S. media coverage of terrorism since 9/11" published in the special Middle East issue of Communication Studies, 62(1), 2011. This paper was in collaboration with COMS 464: Advanced Research Methods students.

Kate Martinson is curating "Making a Mark: Jeremiah Johnson and Jon Lobeck," the first in a series of art exhibits to be held at The Spectrum Network, 607 Washington St. The show is on display through March 15. The Spectrum Network will hold a reception Wednesday, Feb. 16, 4-7 p.m. The reception is open to the public with no charge for admission; refreshments provided courtesy of Oneota Community Food Co-op.

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Wrestling lost to Dubuque Feb. 11, 13-26.

Men's tennis defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering Feb. 11, 9-0, Buena Vista Feb. 12, 6-3, and Central Feb. 12, 8-1. With the win over Central, the Norse have 33 consecutive victories in the IIAC.

Women's track placed second of five teams at the Meet of Hearts results held Feb. 12 at Carleton. The Norse placed first in the 4x200 meter relay, 1:49.53. They also took first through eighth place in the 3,000 meter run, and first through third in the mile run.

Men's track and field placed third of five teams at the Meet of Hearts. The Norse had three first place finishers: Nick Clark, high jump, 1.86m; Shane Steele, 3,000 meter run, 8:50.23; and Vaughn Tackmann, 600 yard dash, 1:16.02.

Women's basketball lost to Dubuque Feb. 12, 55-64.

Men's basketball defeated Dubuque, 64-53, clinching a share of first IIAC title since 1984.

Admissions seeks student ambassadors

The Admissions Office is in the process of hiring next year's student ambassadors. These students will serve as office assistants and tour guides. Take a moment to think about the students with whom you interact who would do a great job of representing their Luther experience to prospective students and their parents. Encourage them to come to the Admissions Visit Center for more information and an application, or email their names to Marty Berg and she will send them an application. They must be next year's sophomores, juniors and seniors. Applications are due Feb. 21.

Volunteers sought for Peace Prize Forum

Nobel Peace Prize Forum organizers are looking for drivers, traffic directors, hospitality helpers and people to direct crowds in between Nobel Peace Prize Forum sessions. You will not have to miss any of the Forum. McElroy student/faculty research

The Iowa College Foundation announces its call for proposals for student/faculty research projects for 2011-12. Student participants must be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2011. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student or team of students, and a sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of a credible research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award is $2,000. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals. Internal deadline for proposals is March 4. Forms are available in the Dean’s Office or via email <brandtja>.

Oneota Film Festival seeks volunteers

The Oneota Film Festival is looking for individuals or groups that want to be part of the planning process for the 2012 film festival. Planning will begin in the next couple of months with volunteers being solicited to help with film screening, event planning, volunteer coordination, student film submissions and marketing.
