Task Group 150 update

For those who missed President Torgerson's presentation to faculty and staff last Thursday, his Powerpoint presentation on Task Group 150's work can be found on Katie under the course called Office of the President.

Registration for Nobel Peace Prize Forum

Those attending the Nobel Peace Prize Forum should pick up their nametag and program booklet in the Union lobby between 3-5 p.m. Friday afternoon to avoid long lines (1,400 have registered). The opening plenary session begins at 7 p.m. in the CFL.  Online registration is closed but a limited number of walk-in registrations will be accepted beginning at 3 p.m. Friday in the Union lobby.

Parking restrictions during NPPF 2011

With more than 1,300 registrants for the Peace Prize Forum on campus March 4-5, parking and traffic flow will be an issue. To help accommodate the parking needs of our guests we will close the Preus Library parking lot to faculty, staff and students at midnight on March 3. The lot will reopen for regular use at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 5. As an alternative to the Preus Library lot we suggest the Regents Center or Farwell lots. We urge anyone who can avoid bringing a car onto campus during this event to do so. Consider car pooling, walking to work or using alternative means of transportation. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.     

Sustainability seeks immersion leaders

The Sustainability Office is looking for group leaders for the 2011 first-year immersion trips the week before Move-In Day.  There are six different trip options, and each faculty/staff leader will be assisted by a student leader.  If you enjoy interacting with students and spending time in nature, look for the link under “What’s Currently Happening” at www2.luther.edu/sustainability/ for more information.

Book Shop textbook challenge reminder

Faculty who turn in their textbook order by March 18 will be entered in a drawing for a Book Shop gift card.

Explanation of brochures from HR

Employees covered by The Hartford, Luther’s life and disability insurance provider, received an inter-campus envelope with three brochures: Employee Assistance Program, Funeral Planning and Travel Assistance. There is a wallet-sized card on the back of the travel assistance brochure. The policy # for this program is GLT696936.  Write this number on the card and place in a wallet or purse.

KATIE workshop

On Thursday, March 3, Rebecca Sullivan will lead two sessions in Preus Library's Hovde Lounge. The first session, "Posting Course Materials and Activities," is at 9:30 a.m., and "Venturing into the Gradebook" begins at 10 a.m. Bring questions to this informal workshop for new KATIE users. See http://lis.luther.edu/node/5367 for more information.

Human Dissection Seminars

Ever wanted to see what the inside of a human body looks like? The students who took the human dissection and anatomy course during J-term will share their dissections with Luther students, faculty and staff Feb. 28-March 17. Farewell reception for Peltz March 2

A farewell reception for Mark Peltz will be held Wednesday, March 2 from 3:30-5 p.m. to thank him for his service to Luther as assistant dean and director of the Career Center. Please join us in the Addams Lounge just outside of the Career Center on the second floor of the Union to bid Mark a fond farewell.  

SPOKES first meeting March 3

Ethnic Arts Festival March 4

The Diversity Center will present the 28th annual Ethnic Arts Festival Friday, March 4 from 8:15-11 p.m. in Valders Hall of Science.

Luther students will set up display tables on both floors of Valders to share information about their respective countries.  The students will dress in native outfits and "street performers" will be located throughout the display tables.

Live entertainment will be provided during the evening in Valders 206. 

Ethnic Arts food prep help wanted

Food preparation for Ethnic Arts is underway, presenting a chance to work with Chef Victor to prepare dishes for the Ethnic Arts Food Market, held in Valders Friday, March 4 from 8:15-11 p.m.

Come help Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings beginning at 8 p.m. and work as little or as long as you like. Need not have food prep experience. Come ready to learn and have a great time. Contact the Diversity Center with questions, 387-1014.

Community mapping forum-date change

The Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative invites the Luther community to a community mapping forum. Bring your great ideas and questions to help support an active community. Discussion about the walkable and bikable future of Decorah will be Tuesday, March 8, 7 p.m. at Decorah's City Hall.

Jeffrey Shulman guest lecture March 8

Jeffrey Shulman, associate professor of legal research and writing at Georgetown Law, will present the lecture "Who Owns the Soul of the Child?: Religious Parenting Rights and the Enfranchisement of the Child" Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. 

Ash Wednesday service March 9

The community is invited to an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Hosted by Luther and St. Benedict's Parish. Join us as we begin the Lenten season with the imposition of ashes and sharing Holy Communion.

Faculty Artist Series: Kominami

Miko Kominami will perform a faculty artist series piano recital Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in Noble Recital Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. Kominami's program includes "Deep Color" by Henry Cowell, Sonata, Op. 31 No. 2 "Tempest" by Beethoven and the Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op. 87 by Antonin Dvorak.

CSS: Cantus March 11

Cantus, a premier all-male a cappella ensemble, will perform Friday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall as part of Luther's 2010-11 Center Stage Series. Tickets are $22, $20 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, available at the Box Office.

Q&A with Cantus March 11

The Center Stage Series is hosting a Q&A session with Cantus, an all-male a cappella ensemble, for Luther students and the community Friday, March 11 at 4 p.m. in the Jenson-Noble Choir Room. Luther alum Eric (Hopkins) Ellingsen is a Cantus member and an incredible resource for anybody interested in choral music, performing and more. Get your ticket to the Cantus performance the same evening at 7:30 p.m.

Center Stage Dinner Series March 11

Luther Catering will serve dinner before the Center Stage performance of Cantus Friday, March 11. Service, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room includes: bruschetta with a tomato-olive tapenade, apricot chicken pinwheels with confetti hash brown potatoes and chef’s choice vegetable, artisan rolls/butter, tuxedo petit fours. Augustine performs March 12

Indie-acoustic duet Augustine will perform Saturday, March 12 at 9 p.m. in Marty's CyberCafé. Tickets are $9, available at the door or at the Luther Box Office. Augustine is named for the oldest town in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla., where the duo, Louis Johnson and Jordan Meredith, met in 2009. Both sing and play guitar.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Bruce Butters and Wayne Tudor of Decorah, and Ardith Hoff of Calmar, have joined the board of directors for The Spectrum Network in Decorah.

Michael Chesher gave a clarinet master class and a guest artist recital at University of New Hampshire Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Ginger Meyette presented a workshop at the Baccalaureate Program Directors conference in Cincinnati, Ohio on Feb. 25. The workshop was on "Infusing LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) Elder Content into the Social Work Curriculum."

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Luther wrestling finished sixth at the IIAC championships Feb. 25. Two Norse qualified for the national meet; Kevin Bokoski '11 at 141 and Daniel Mendoza '14 at 125.

Men's track and field placed third at the IIAC indoor championships Feb. 25-26. Shane Steele '12 earned the conference championship in both the 5,000 meter and 3,000 meter run. Also earning all-conference honors in the 3,000 was Scott Mittmann '14, and the Norse distance medley relay team of Kyle Buck '11, Robert Matthiesen '12, Max Molzahn '12 and Andrew Papke-Larson '12.

Women's track and field placed third at the IIAC indoor championships. Emma Spoon '12 and Ellie Neubauer '11 earned all-conference honors in the 5,000 meter run. Spoon earned a second all-conference honor in the 3,000 meter run. The Norse distance medley relay team of Sarah Lundine '11, Sam McAllister '12, Annie Klepper '13 and Dani Meirick '12, also earned all-conference honors. Meirick, McAllister, Julia Schiefelbein-Egan '11 and Kayla Uphoff '14 won the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:31.84, a new school record.

Men's basketball captured their first IIAC tournament championship Feb. 26, 57-48, over Dubuque. Tim Merritt '12 and Nnamdi Okolue '11 led scoring with 13 and 11 points respectively. The Norse will travel to Mequon, Wis. to take on Concordia (WI) in the Buuck Fieldhouse Friday, March 4 at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Student mental health

Last spring, 360 Luther sophomores and juniors completed the National College Health Assessment. Luther swim team offers swim lessons

The Luther and diving teams is offering swim lessons in the Regents Center Pool for area children ages four and older. Two sessions are available: Session 1: March 30-April 8 and Session 2: April 11-20. Each session has three times available, 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. Cost is $70 per session, per child. The swimming and diving teams will collect non-perishable food items for the local food pantry. With each item donated, $1 will be taken off the cost of the lessons, up to $5.
