Nominations for VP/Dean due April 7

Due to the President's heavy April travel schedule he asks that nominations for the three-year position of vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college be submitted by 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, rather than Monday, April 11. Nominations should be sent to Linda Skoda, <skodalda>.

The President will meet with the Appointment, Tenure and Promotion Committee and the chairs of the Academic Planning Committee and Faculty Interests Committee early next week to seek their counsel.

College Council Executive Summary

College Council met March 14 and March 30. Agenda included: continuing review and development of the 2011-12 budget; assessment of budgetary implications of adding the international studies major and the discontinuation of the management information systems major per faculty action on March 15; a review of faculty/staff compensation including looking at ACM college and benchmark college comparative information; discussion of the progress of TG 150 discussions and the process for budget assessment and reallocation currently underway.

Staff Excellence Award nominations

Staff and faculty are invited to nominate a Luther staff member for this year's Staff Excellence Awards. Deadline for nominations, Friday, April 15, is earlier than normal so that the recipients can be announced at the Sesquicentennial Faculty/Staff picnic on Wednesday, May 25. Distinguished Lectures next year

Selection process has begun for next year's distinguished lectures. To submit a person for consideration, send the name(s) and reason for consideration to Tanya Gertz at <gertta01>.  Distinguished Lectures are intended to engage the entire campus around a high profile special guest once a semester, and offer various connections to academic life.

NFCA Strikeout Cancer game April 10

Sunday, April 10, the softball team will host the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Strikeout Cancer game with St. Mary’s University for a double header that will begin at 2 p.m.

The Norse will have balloons and ribbons available for donations, and will be wearing green headbands to show their support for Luther outfielder Abby Christian, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. All of the donations will go towards Lymphoma research and the Christian Family.

Jens Jensen's Transformed campus

Luther senior Rebecca L. Kohnert's exhibit "Jens Jensen and the Transformed Campus" is open, displaying the evolution of the Luther campus landscape over the past 100 years.  

The exhibit is located outside the Hovde Lounge on the main floor of the Preus Library. Kohnert, a history major with minors in museum studies and classical studies, is curator of the exhibit.

The Kohnert exhibit includes historic photographs, borrowed from the Luther College Archives and the Luther Photo Bureau gallery.

'Eyewitness to the Egyptian Revolution'

Ahmed Shawki, internationally-recognized activist, journalist and author, will present a Luther College Guest Lecture Tuesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Olin 102.

In his lecture, "Eyewitness to the Egyptian Revolution," Shawki will discuss his firsthand account of the Egyptian revolution. He will provide the Luther community with a unique perspective on the future of the movement in the months to come and its impact on struggles throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Dorian Choral Festival, Concert April 6

Luther will host the Dorian Invitational Choral Festival and Concert Wednesday, April 6, the Festival Concert will begin at 3 p.m. Festival events will be held in the CFL. Choirs attending the 2011 festival include the Fort Atkinson High School Chamber Chorale, Fort Atkinson, Wis., the Hudson High School Chamber Choir, Hudson, Wis., the Lakeville North High School Chorale, Lakeville, Minn., the Mankato East High School Concert Choir, Mankato, Minn., and the Rosemount High School Concert Choir, Rosemount, Minn.

Collegiate, Cathedral tour homecoming

Collegiate Chorale and Cathedral Choir will perform Tuesday, April 5, 7:30 p.m. in the CFL.

The performance is open to the public, no charge for admission.

Collegiate Chorale will perform works by Peter Philips, Carl Heinrich Graun, Sergei Rachmaninoff and an arrangement by Allen Koepke. In the second half of the performance, Cathedral Choir will perform Bach's "Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin bei dir" and "Jubilate Deo" by Agneta Sköld.

Big Questions Debate April 6

What is the relationship between religion and science in the pursuit of truth and goodness? Where does morality come from? Professors Eric Baack, Storm Bailey, Sean Burke and Loyal Rue have been invited to discuss such issues in a panel format in the first Big Questions Debate, hosted by the Secular Student Society Wednesday, April 6, 7-9 p.m. in Valders 262. Wii bowling party April 7

There will be a Wii bowling party on Thursday, April 7, starting at 9:45 a.m. in the Luther bookstore. Come see the two top teams challenge for the championship, have some snacks and enjoy the fellowship of friends.

NAA luncheon April 7

The Norse Athletic Association will hold a spring sports luncheon Thursday, April 7 at noon in Peace Dining Room. Cost for the luncheon is $5, paid at the door. Spring sport coaches will speak about their respective seasons, providing NAA guests a chance to get firsthand information on upcoming Norse athletics. RSVP to Mark Franzen, 387-1588 or <franma03>.

Flatland on IPTV

Wanda Flatland will be on "Iowa Outdoors," an IPTV program, on Thursday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. The spring episode takes viewers 100 feet underground into Coldwater Cave on Wanda's property to explore Iowa's longest and most spectacular cave.

Jason Derülo in concert April 7

Singer, songwriter, dancer and actor Jason Derülo will perform in concert Thursday, April 7 at 8 p.m. in the Regents Center. Tickets are $27, available at the Luther Box Office. 

Opening act for the Derülo concert is Nikki & Rich. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The concert is sponsored by Luther's Student Activities Council: Concerts Committee.

Brudos Family Prize recital April 9

Aliyah Richling '11, will present the Brudos Family Prize in Opera Performance recital Saturday, April 9 at 4 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.

Richling is the 2010 recipient of the Brudos Family Prize in Opera Performance. A reception will follow the performance. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Believe to Achieve' half marathon

The second annual "Believe to Achieve" half marathon will be Sunday, April 10, starting at 1 p.m. This 13.1 mile race is for all walkers, joggers and runners that have never run more than a 5K race before. Balalaika Ensemble performance April 10

Luther College Balalaika Ensemble will perform in concert Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. in the Helen Farwell Lounge in Farwell Hall.

The fully costumed Luther Balalaika Ensemble performs Russian and East European music on traditional instruments.

The ensemble features instruments of the balalaika and domra families, as well as accordion, percussion and vocal. Members of the ensemble include students, faculty, staff and community members.

National Library Week book sale

Preus Library's annual National Library Week book sale will be held Monday-Friday, April 11-15. Hundreds of hardcover and paperback books will be available. Prices will decline daily.

'The Luxury of Limited Means'

Janne Kimberly Flisrand '94, will present the lecture "The Luxury of Limited Means: The Freedom to Choose Your Own Route" Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Flisrand will be on campus for a five-day residency, April 10-14.

Jazz Orchestra to perform April 13

Luther College's Jazz Orchestra will perform Wednesday, April 13, 7 p.m. at Center for Faith and Life. The performance is open to the public. The Jazz Orchestra concert program will feature Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Maakestad art exhibit on display April 14

Paintings by Tom Maakestad '80, will be on display April 14-May 22 in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

Maakestad's large landscapes have been featured in 50 group and solo exhibitions in the U.S. and overseas, including 10 shows at the Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis over the past 16 years. 

Comedian Pete Lee April 15

Pete Lee, comedian, will perform Friday, April 15 at 9 p.m. in Marty's.

Retirement party

The Economics and Business department invites students, faculty, staff and alumni to join us in celebrating two special retirements. Uwe Rudolf and Rich Leake are retiring after a combined 76 years of service. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Nancy K. Barry has been selected as a participant in the Lutheran Academy of Scholars 2011 Summer Seminar. Barry will be one of a select group of leading scholars from educational institutions affiliated with the Lutheran church who will take part in the prestigious LAS seminar. Held at Harvard University June 20-July 1, the seminar will address issues of religious, social and cultural significance. The summer seminar is the foremost of the Academy's programs that encourage scholars and promote scholarship: faculty seminars, publication support and conference sponsorship.

Don Jones, along with the partners of the LoSasso Interactive Advertising Agency in Chicago made a presentation titled "Matching Course Content with Interactive Marketing Needs of Business" March 24 at the Marketing Management Association Conference held in Chicago. 

Richard Mtisi presented an invited lecture at Valparaiso University on Tuesday, March 22 titled "Triumph of Wild Animals over People? The Challenges and Opportunities in the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Area of Southern Africa."

Robert Shedinger was invited to speak on his book "Was Jesus a Muslim?" by the Muslim Student Association at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and the Islamic Society of Nevada on March 18-19, and then by the Albanian Islamic Center in Grosse Point, Mich., and the Islamic Society of Flint, Mich. on March 25-26.

Emily Voss '13, has been selected as a finalist in the 31st annual College Photography Contest sponsored by Photographer's Forum Magazine and Nikon. Voss's photo, titled "Ice Blue: Eyes of the Winter Goddess," was one of the finalists selected from some 14,000 images submitted to the College Photography Contest by students around the world.  Winners will be announced by August 2011.

Luther College Ballroom/Swing club took one-third of the medals in the 14th annual Star of the North DanceSport Classic held Feb. 25-27 at the Ukrainian Event Center in Minneapolis. Luther club members were among the 243 competitors at the event, ranging from college students, high school students and adults from the region. Thirty-one Luther students competed in seven dance categories: cha-cha, foxtrot, rumba, swing, tango, waltz and west cost swing.

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Women's track and field placed first of 10 teams in the Central Invitational April 2. Christina Storlie '13 placed first in the 3000m steeplechase, 11:27.49; and Lauren Boleen '11 placed first in the javelin throw, 41.87m.

Men's track and field placed second of 11 teams in the Central Invitational. Trent Stonerook '11 placed first in the javelin throw, 50.82m.

Women's tennis defeated St. Ambrose, 9-0, and Monmouth, 9-0, on April 3

Men's tennis defeated ARI, 8-1, and St. Ambrose, 8-1, on April 3

Softball split games with Eau Claire April 3, 6-2 and 5-6. Bre Twait hit a two-run home run, Abby Christian went three for four in game two with three RBI.

Women's golf placed first of three teams at the Loras Invitational April 3-4, with Laura Davis '14 and Kate Traxler '13 placing first and second respectively.

Men's golf placed eighth of 12 teams at the Loras Invitational.

Benefit brunch for Joni Meyer family

A benefit brunch for the Joni and Herman Meyer family will be Sunday, April 10, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in St. Benedict Parish Hall, Decorah. Serving scrambled eggs with toppings, pancakes, sausage and beverages. Tickets are $6 per person; children five and under, no charge. Advance tickets available at the Luther Alumni Office or Viking State Bank. Tickets available at the door. The event will also feature a bake sale and silent auction. Joni, a staff member in the Alumni Office, was seriously injured in an automobile accident Jan. 28. 

'Veg Yourself' pledge

Pledge to "Veg Yourself" and join Luther students, faculty and staff in a pledge to eat vegetarian at least once a week until the end of the spring semester. By focusing on the food groups we don't eat enough of, yet are so good for our well-being, we hope this pledge will help establish healthy habits for you and the planet. LFA accepting applications April 8

On Friday, April 8 Luther's Lecture and Fine Arts committee will begin accepting applications for the funding of campus programming. This programming may involve musical events, literary events, theatre/dance events, artistic events and speakers.

Funding is available for requests ranging from $100 to $1,000. If you are bringing someone to campus for the 2011-12 academic year who might fit in one of these categories, consider applying. Save the date for Senior Sendoff

Faculty/staff are encouraged to "save the date" for the 2011 Senior Sendoff. Sponsored by Student Senate and the Alumni Office, Senior Sendoff has become an annual celebration, bringing together soon-to-be graduates with faculty/staff for an evening of conversation and dancing. Senior Sendoff will be held at the Hotel Winneshiek May 19 from 7-10:30 p.m. Faculty and staff will receive an email message with a link to register in late April.
