Time for a party

A college can't celebrate a sesquicentennial without paying special tribute to the faculty and staff who have served with distinction, devotion and yes, stress and sweat.  Luther's 150th Family Reunion and Fun Festival on May 25, 4-7 p.m., is a time to honor each of you, your families, and former faculty and staff. Look for your invitation in campus mail. Judy and I look forward to sharing good food and fellowship with the best group of co-workers anywhere.

Faculty Recognition Dinner May 12

Faculty and staff are invited to attend the Faculty Recognition Dinner, Thursday, May 12, 5:30 p.m. reception and 6 p.m. dinner, in Peace Dining Room, with a program immediately following. The program will honor retirees Virginia Gibbs, Carol Gilbertson, Sheryl Juve, Harvey Klevar, Penny and Rich Leake, Alan Lerstrom, Mark Lund, Judith Nye, Fred Nyline, Uwe Rudolf, Loyal Rue and Walt Will. Emergency Communication test

Luther's Emergency Communications team will send a test message via the ConnectEd/Blackboard system this week. The test will be scheduled for a date and time that we hope is least disruptive to classes and activities.

Facilities Services

Facilities Services will conduct the annual boiler shutdown and inspection beginning Thursday, May 26 at 7 a.m. Steam will be back on by 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 1. Hot water will not be available in Farwell, Larsen, Brandt, Regents Center, Ylvisaker, Olin and Valders.  Limited hot water will be available in the Union, Miller/Dieseth and Sampson Hoffland.  Some buildings will be cooler when the boiler is shutdown.  For more information, call 387-1146.

Children's bargain book blowout

The Book Shop is celebrating Children's Book Week, May 2-8, with a bargain children's book sale beginning Monday, May 2. Selection includes hundreds of titles priced $1 and up. Hurry in. The sale continues while supplies last.

Mental Health First Aid

Pam Torresdal and Stu Johnston may offer a Mental Health First Aid class for faculty and staff the week after commencement, if there is sufficient interest. MHFA is a 12-hour course designed to equip lay people to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. To participate, you must be able to attend all 12 hours of the training (morning sessions on May 23, 25, 26, and 27).  Email Pam, <torrespa> by Monday, May 2 if you want to participate.

Summer 2011 faculty workshop

LIS and the Dean's Office are partnering to offer "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology" for faculty July 11-15. Participants will consider course-specific information literacy principles in the context of departmental/ program goals and teaching goals in relation to use of technology: social media, new media, hardware, software, etc. More information and application at: http://lis.luther.edu/studentlearningworkshop2011. Writing help/chat time in Gathering Place

Don’t miss the new events happening in the Diversity Center Gathering Place. Thursdays from 11 a.m.-noon, librarian Germano Streese will be on hand to provide writing help for students. Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. is Chat Time with Sandhya Caton, Interfaith coordinator.  This is a time for students to have casual conversations about Interfaith issues. All are welcome. No appointments necessary.

Green officer certification

Faculty and staff are invited to get their office green certified by Sustainability. Fiscal year end approaching

The end of the fiscal year is fast approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 10-11 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices (no faxed copies) and supporting purchase orders/ purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 10 to be included in FY 10-11 budget. Luther Reuse Sale April 26

A Luther Reuse Sale will be held Tuesday, April 26 from 5-7 p.m. in the Ashmore-Jewell barn, next to Baker Village. As a replacement of the annual Luther College auction, the reuse sale will sell a variety of items no longer needed by the college. Benefit concert April 26

Peter Lingen will perform a benefit guitar recital in Postville Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. at the Postville Community Schools Fine Arts Center. He will perform music by Julio Cesar Oliva and Manuel Ponce from Mexico, Venezuelan Valses by Antonio Lauro and Brazilian music by Paulo Bellinati and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Lingen will also perform "Berceuse Sfaradite" by Paul Ben-Heim, a work he arranged, performed with Diane Lingen.

Brass Ensemble Concert April 26

Luther's Brass Ensemble will perform in concert Tuesday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Ensembles are conducted by Rebecca Shaffer, horn, Michael Smith, trombone, and Richard Tirk, trumpet. The concert will conclude with the entire Brass Ensemble joining forces in Giovanni Gabrieli's Canzona no. 27.   

Varsity Band, Wind and Percussion Ensemble concert April 27

Under the direction of Frederick Nyline, the Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The Varsity Band will perform a variety of Americana music, including "The National Emblem March" by E.E. Bagley, "Cajun Folk Songs" a two-movement suite by Frank Ticheli.

Luther first-year and student conductor Sydnie Reynolds will direct the Wind and Percussion Ensemble in "El Capitan March" by John Philip Sousa and "The March of the Belgian Paratroopers" by Pierre Leemans. 

Sustainability offering 'Gardening 101'

Luther Sustainability, will offer a series of three gardening classes: "Gardening 101," Saturday, April 30; "Planning a Fall Garden," Saturday, June 18; and "Extending the Season," Saturday, Aug. 6.

The classes will be 10 a.m.-noon in Luther's Valders Hall of Science Room 362. All are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Gardening 101 teaches beginning and intermediate gardeners the basics of gardening. The class will feature special tips for those gardening with limited space.

LSEA sponsoring informational forum

The student education group LSEA-Wisco, with support from the Center for Ethics and Public Life, will sponsor an informational forum on the budget/political battles that have been taking place in Wisconsin. John Lehman ’67 and Brian Rude ’77, former members of both the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate, will share their views.  The discussion will be in Valders 206 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27.

Jim Martin-Schramm will give the lecture "Climate Justice and U.S. Energy Policy" Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Olin 102.

Philharmonia concert April 28

Philharmonia will perform a spring concert with the Luther Ringers Thursday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Philharmonia, conducted by Spencer Martin, will perform "Pomp and Circumstance" March No. 4 by Edward Elgar, "An Outdoor Overture" by Aaron Copland, "Hungarian March from La damnation de Faust" by Hector Berlioz, and more.

Luther Ringers, conducted by Gregory Peterson, will play "Antiphony" by Dale Wood, "For As the Rain Comes Down (Isaiah 55:10)" by Lee J. Afdahl, Luther College Class of 1971, and more.

Aurora, Norsemen concert April 29

Aurora and Norsemen will present a spring concert Friday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m., the Center for Faith and Life.

Aurora will perform repertoire by Vaclovas Augustinas, Ola Gjeilo, Libby Larsen, Antonio Vivaldi and Gwyneth Walker.

The Norsemen will perform works by Jacob Handl, Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov and Felix Mendelssohn and arrangements by Howard Helvey, Brad Holmes and Mack Wilberg.

 The two groups will combine to perform "Lift up your heads" arranged by Olaf C. Christiansen and the finale from "The Gondoliers" by Gilbert and Sullivan.

'The Assemblage Point'

The Theatre/Dance department will present seven performances of "The Assemblage Point."  The production is described as "a myth performance centered around archetypal energies which beckon to dream a new world into being." Performances are April 29 and 30 and May 5, 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. with matinee performances April 30 and May 7 at 1:30 p.m.  Performances will take place in Jewel Theatre. Tickets are available at the Luther Box Office.

Luther 150th Birthday Bash April 30

Luther College Student Activities Council Special Events Committee will host the Luther 150th Birthday Bash Saturday, April 30 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on the Library Lawn. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. A ceremonial cake cutting with Luther President Richard Torgerson will take place at 5 p.m. with music from the Luther Pep Band. DJ Donald Lee-Brown will provide the evening's entertainment following the cake cutting.

'Ask What You Can Feed Your Country'

Curt Ellis, founder of FoodCorps and a Peabody-winning film-maker, will speak at Luther Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in Valders 206. His lecture, titled "Ask Not What Your Country Can Feed You—Ask What You Can Feed Your Country," will discuss his documentaries, advocacy and ideas for changing the way America eats. Reception with Ellis to follow the lecture.

'Of Pueblos, People and Prophets' May 4

Bruce Bradley, world-renowned archaeologist and professor at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, will present a public lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 4 in Olin 102 titled "Of Pueblos, People and Prophets." The lecture will examine the rise and fall of an ancient civilization in the Southwest between 900 and 1200 A.D.  Bradley is an expert on stone tool technology and experimental archaeology.  His varied research interests include stone tool technology, paleo-American archaeology and the ancient history of the North American Southwest.

Farewell reception for Jean and Wanda May 5

A farewell reception for Jean Brickman and Wanda Flatland will be held Thursday, May 5, 10-11 a.m. in the Admissions Atrium. Faculty and staff are invited to join in saying farewell to Jean and Wanda and recognize them for their years of service to Luther and IKON.  Their service with IKON concludes May 10. 

"Healing Ecology" lecture May 5

David Loy, professor, writer and Zen teacher in the Sanbo Kyodan tradition of Japanese Zen Buddhism, will give the lecture "Healing Ecology: Buddhist Reflections on the Eco-Crisis," Thursday, May 5, 7 p.m. in Olin 102. Open to the public with no charge for admission.

Loy will argue that there is an important parallel between what Buddhism says about our personal predicament and our collective predicament today in relation to the rest of the biosphere.

'Street Scene' May 6-7

The Music department will present "Street Scene" with music by Kurt Weill. "Street Scene" takes place on two scorching summer days in July 1946. The opera tells the story of the romance between Rose Maurrant and neighbor, Sam Kaplan, as well as the extramarital affair of Rose's mother, Anna. The tensions climb, along with the heat, building to a tragedy of epic proportions.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, May 6-7 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL. The Luther Jazz Orchestra will play the music, conducted by Dr. Tony Guzman. Tickets are $10 (free with Luther ID), available at the box office.

Discovery Day May 7

Calling all kids in kindergarten through sixth grade, Saturday, May 7 is Discovery Day from 9 a.m.-noon at Baker Commons. Come enjoy a morning of outdoor games, discovery and fun. Luther Environmental Education class will host a series of three short workshops for all students interested in learning more about the natural world. Pre-registration required. 'History Walk' dress rehearsal May 7

Faculty, staff and students are invited to view a dress rehearsal of the "History Walk" that Luther has commissioned for the Sesquicentennial Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. Costumed actors stationed throughout campus will bring to life many of the people and pivotal moments which have shaped the college since 1861. Meet at Bentdahl Commons ten minutes before show time, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. The tour will last 50-60 minutes. Another performance will be offered Sunday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m. as part of Commencement weekend. 

Student composers recital

Fifteen new works by 14 student composers will be premiered in two recitals, Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m., and Monday, May 9 at 9 p.m. Both recitals will be held in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The performances are open to the public with no charge for admission.

The composers are students in the Luther composition studio, directed by Brooke Joyce and Steven Smith.

Farewell reception for Crafts

A reception for Bill and Anne Craft will be Tuesday, May 10, from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. in Bentdahl Commons (rain location: CFL lobby).  Join the campus in bidding farewell and thanks to the Crafts as they move north to share their gifts with the Concordia College (Moorhead) community. 

Sesquicentennial relay race

Relive the Luther journey on a 150-kilometer relay race from Luther's birthplace in Halfway Creek, Wis. to Decorah, Iowa on June 4-5. On day one of the race, runners will travel approximately 60 miles from Halfway Creek to Rushford, Minn., the location of the overnight stay of the relay race participants. NAHA seminar June 14-17

Luther will host the 11th seminar of the Norway chapter of the Norwegian-American Historical Association, bringing together specialists, researchers and writers in Norwegian-American literature, linguistics, religious studies, history, social science, fine and folk arts, and cultural studies to share information in the context of international migration and ethnic studies. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Todd Green gave a presentation and facilitated a discussion at an event sponsored by the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa in Des Moines on April 15. The topic was "What's Driving Anti-Islamic Sentiment in the U.S.?"

The Luther College Balalaika Ensemble, under the direction of Laurie Iudin-Nelson, performed a concert at Grinnell College on April 9. On April 14, the ensemble performed a concert for residents at Hillcrest Manor in Sumner, Iowa.

Earlier this month, Nick Gomersall acted as moderator at a workshop funded by a $15,000 FaCE grant which he, together with colleagues from Colorado College and Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, was awarded last fall by ACM.

Music faculty members Eric Kutz, cello, and Miko Kominami, piano, recently performed three concerts in Chicago as the Murasaki Duo.  The first concert on March 27 was at the Mayne Stage and was also a one-hour live radio broadcast and interview on WFMT, Chicago's classical station. Later that day, the Duo was joined by music faculty member Tarn Travers, violin, for a performance at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago's Chapel Concert Series.  On March 27, Kutz and Kominami performed on the University of Illinois at Chicago's "Tuesdays at 1" concert series.  Over the course of the three concerts the Duo performed works by Brahms, Saint-Saens, Cowell, Hagen, Barber and Piazzolla.

Brooke Joyce's music was recently heard in two concerts in Illinois. As part of a residency, three of Brooke's works were performed by faculty and students at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. Three days later, across town in Normal, Brooke's work "The Artsy Harpsichordiste" was performed as part of Illinois State's Red Note New Music Festival.

Jim Martin-Schramm gave two presentations at the University of Montana on April 18. He presented "Climate Justice and U.S. Energy Policy" to the philosophy forum. He also gave a public address sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department and the Center for Ethics on "Skull Valley: Nuclear Waste, Tribal Sovereignty, and Environmental Racism."

Holly Moore presented the paper "Anaximander's Transcendental Materialism" on April 14 at the Ancient Philosophy Society conference held at the Sundance Resort in Utah.

Rachel Vagts presented "150 Years of Norwegian-American Education: The History of Luther College" to the Glitne-Sioux Viking Sons of Norway lodge in Sioux City, Iowa on April 16.

Heather Armstrong recently performed recitals and gave master classes at the University of Iowa, Augsburg College and the University of Northern Iowa. She was also invited to be an adjudicator for the Midwest Double Reed Society's Young Artist Competition, held this year at Kansas State University.

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

No. 11 softball defeated no. 3 Central April 23, 9-5 and 1-0. The Norse are tied for first place in conference with Central, and their current win streak is 14. In game one Lauran Snyder '12 hit a two-run homerun and lead off batter Kelsey Weindruch '13 went two for four, scoring twice. In game two Becca Girvan (13-2) went the distance, pitching with her fourth shut out of the season, allowing four hits and striking out two.

Baseball lost to Dubuque April 23, 2-5 and 3-4, and defeated Dubuque April 22, 7-1. Joe Thompson '11 hit a three-run double in the win. Chris Reynolds '12 went three for four with an RBI, and Paul Ryan '11 went two for three with an RBI.

Home events this week:

Baseball hosts Wartburg April 27 at 3 p.m.; Simpson April 29 at 3 p.m.; and Simpson April 30 at 1 p.m. The April 27 and 29 games will be video streamed.

Women's tennis hosts NCAA Qualifier April 30 at 10 a.m.
