Fiscal year end approaching
The end of the fiscal year is fast approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 10-11 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices (no faxed copies) and supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 10 to be included in FY 10-11 budget. Items for deposit must be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 3. Thanks for helping Office for Financial Services close out the year in a timely manner.
Feedback session on LIS events
LIS will hold a feedback session Monday, May 9, 12:15-1:15 p.m. in Mott for members of the community to offer feedback on LIS Training and Faculty Development sessions, and to offer suggestions for the upcoming year. 'Ask What You Can Feed Your Country'
Curt Ellis, founder of FoodCorps and a Peabody-winning film-maker, will speak at Luther Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in Valders 206. His lecture, titled "Ask Not What Your Country Can Feed You—Ask What You Can Feed Your Country," will discuss his documentaries, advocacy and ideas for changing the way America eats. Reception with Ellis to follow the lecture.
'Of Pueblos, People and Prophets' May 4
Bruce Bradley, world-renowned archaeologist and professor at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, will present a public lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 4 in Olin 102 titled "Of Pueblos, People and Prophets." The lecture will examine the rise and fall of an ancient civilization in the Southwest between 900 and 1200 A.D. Bradley is an expert on stone tool technology and experimental archaeology. His varied research interests include stone tool technology, paleo-American archaeology and the ancient history of the North American Southwest.
Crippen book signing May 5
Luther College Book Shop will host a book reading and signing session of the book "Every Place I Go I Take Another Place With Me" with author and Luther senior Hannah Crippen Thursday, May 5 from 9:40-10:30 a.m. in the Luther Book Shop. Compiled and edited by Crippen, the book is a collection of non-fiction essays written by 19 Luther students. Crippen and several Luther student contributors will read from the book and sign copies.
Farewell reception for Jean and Wanda
A farewell reception for Jean Brickman and Wanda Flatland will be held Thursday, May 5, 10-11 a.m. in the Addams Lounge. Faculty, staff and students are invited to join in saying farewell to Jean and Wanda and recognize them for their years of service to Luther and IKON. Their service with IKON concludes May 10.
Refsal book signing May 5
A book signing and reception in recognition of Harley Refsal's latest book on Scandinavian-style figure carving, "Whittling Little Folk," will be held at Java John's on Thursday, May 5, 5-7 p.m. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, but if you already have a copy, feel free to bring it along for signing.
'The Assemblage Point'
The Theatre/Dance department will present seven performances of "The Assemblage Point." Performances are in Jewel Theatre May 5, 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee performance May 7 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Luther Box Office.
'Healing Ecology' lecture May 5
David Loy, professor, writer and Zen teacher in the Sanbo Kyodan tradition of Japanese Zen Buddhism, will give the lecture, "Healing Ecology: Buddhist Reflections on the Eco-Crisis," Thursday, May 5, 7 p.m. in Olin 102. Open to the public with no charge for admission.
Loy will argue that there is an important parallel between what Buddhism says about our personal predicament and our collective predicament today in relation to the rest of the biosphere.
Student Research Symposium
Students will present and display the results of their 2010-11 research and creative work on Friday, May 6 at the Student Research Symposium.
Presentations and displays take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in various buildings across campus.
The Symposium’s printed program and information about events will be available during the day in the lobby of the CFL and at the information desk in the Union.
The Research Symposium will showcase some of the best examples of the scholarship, research and creative activity of students from academic disciplines across the college.
'Street Scene' May 6-7
The music department will present "Street Scene" with music by Kurt Weill Friday and Saturday, May 6-7 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL. The Luther Jazz Orchestra will play the music, conducted by Tony Guzman. Tickets are $10 (free with Luther ID), available at the box office.
Discovery Day May 7
Calling all kids in kindergarten through sixth grade, Saturday, May 7 is Discovery Day from 9 a.m.-noon at Baker Commons. Come enjoy a morning of outdoor games, discovery and fun. Luther Environmental Education class will host a series of three short workshops for all students interested in learning more about the natural world. Pre-registration required. 'History Walk' dress rehearsal May 7
Faculty, staff and students are invited to view a dress rehearsal of the "History Walk" that Luther has commissioned for the Sesquicentennial Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. Costumed actors stationed throughout campus will bring to life many of the people and pivotal moments which have shaped the college since 1861. Meet at Bentdahl Commons ten minutes before show time, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. The tour will last 50-60 minutes. Another performance will be offered Sunday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m. as part of Commencement weekend.
Student composers recital
Fifteen new works by 14 student composers will be premiered in two recitals, Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m., and Monday, May 9 at 9 p.m. Both recitals will be held in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The performances are open to the public with no charge for admission.
The composers are students in the Luther composition studio, directed by Brooke Joyce and Steven Smith.
Garlic mustard pull land stewardship volunteer event
Garlic mustard pull, a land stewardship volunteer event, will be held Sunday, May 8, 12:30-2:30 p.m. Come spend time outside in Luther's natural areas, pulling a problematic invasive weed, garlic mustard. Also see native wildflowers along the way.
Volunteers will meet in the first floor study lounge of Sampson Hoffland Laboratories at 12:30 p.m. Gloves and digging tools will be provided. In case of rain storms look for cancellation notices posted at Sampson Hoffland 190C.
Luren Singers and Norsemen concert
Decorah's Luren Singers will perform with the Luther College Norsemen Sunday, May 8, 7 p.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago St. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Norsemen are conducted by Tim Peter, and the Luren Singers are conducted by David Judisch.
Farewell reception for Crafts
A reception for Bill and Anne Craft is Tuesday, May 10, from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. in Bentdahl Commons (rain location: CFL lobby). Join the campus in bidding farewell and thanks to the Crafts as they move north to share their gifts with the Concordia College (Moorhead) community.
Book signing May 21
Luther College Book Shop will host a book signing session with author and Luther alumnus Theodor Robert Jacobsen Saturday, May 21, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Luther Book Shop. Written for children of all ages, "Hallowed Ground: A Luther College Legacy" is the story of Jacobsen attending the Luther 100th anniversary celebration with his grandfather when he was six years old. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Natalino Guterres '13 has been awarded a $10,000 Davis Projects for Peace to support his "Music for Peace" project in his native country of Timor-Leste. Guterres will travel in the summer of 2011 to his home in Santa Cruz, Timor-Leste to direct his peace project. With the assistance of a non-governmental arts education organization, he will purchase and distribute musical instruments to school children, coordinate music lessons and rehearsals, and organize Concert for Peace.
Jim Martin-Schramm represented Luther College and the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities on a panel devoted to "Iowa Leadership in Wind Energy Education" at the annual meeting of the Iowa Wind Energy Association in Des Moines April 27.
Jonathon Struve, baritone, and Jessica Paul, piano, will present an art song recital Friday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah. The recital will include selections by Reynaldo Hahn and Vincenzo Bellini. It will also feature Gerald Finzi's extended cycle, "Earth and Air and Rain," set to poems by Thomas Hardy.
Nancy K. Barry presented a paper, "Before Research Went Electronic: How Did Students Use Sources?" at the annual Conference on College Composition and Communication in Atlanta on April 9. The paper was part of a series of panels related to The Citation Project, a multi-institutional research project aimed at exploring what students understand about sources they use in college-level research papers. Kathleen Stokker will deliver the 17th of May address for the Syttende mai Club of Iowa City. Her talk, "The Fabric of Life: Textiles and the Rites of Passage," traces the journey through life's passages from birth through baptism, marriage and death. Vintage Norwegian photographs and paintings illustrate the talk, which examines the textiles used on these occasions to see how this handiwork amplified the meaning of the rites themselves. Stokker's talk is based on an exhibit of traditional textiles presented by the Vesterheim in 2010.
Men's golf placed fourth at the IIAC championships April 30. Tobias Kohl '14 was named all-conference.
Baseball split a double-header with Simpson, 1-2 and 12-1. Jordan Greenland '14 went two for three in the second game, with three RBI.
Women's tennis earned their third straight trip to the national tournament with wins over Cornell, 5-0, and Coe, 5-0, May 1.
Softball won a share of the Iowa Conference championship with wins over Simpson, 9-1 and 7-0 on May 1. The Norse win streak is at 18, tying a 1974 school record for consecutive wins. In game one, Pagie Comentino '12 went three for three and Kelsey Weindruch '13 went two for two, driving in two runs. Lexy Determan '11 allowed one hit, walked five and struck out six. In game two, Lauran Snyder '12 went three for four with a three-run homerun. Becca Girvan '14 threw her seventh shutout of the year, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out 11.

I-ImpactNow, a non-profit organization created by Luther students this year, is accepting meal donations towards the development of an irrigation-based farming cooperative in Ethiopia. The project will unite 50 farmers to grow food in a collaborative setting, produce marketable crops for the growth of their families and encourage a sense of empowerment in Ethiopian communities.
