Kraus named VP/dean of the college

President Torgerson announced Monday that Kevin Kraus, a member of the Luther faculty since 1989, has accepted the invitation to serve as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. President Torgerson said Kevin is a gifted teacher, advisor, and mentor. He served six years as associate dean before returning to the Biology Department. He has led nine J-term study abroad courses, served on the appointment tenure and promotion and the academic planning committees and chaired the faculty committee that planned Sampson Hoffland Laboratories and the renovation of Valders. Kevin begins his duties July 1.

President's office invitation

Luther students, faculty and staff will gather for the annual Senior Recognition Convocation Tuesday, May 10 at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. All offices should arrange for staff members who wish to attend to be able to do so. This celebration is a time to honor all members of the Class of 2011, as well as recognize graduating seniors who have earned academic honors.

Dean of the College William Craft will give the address, "Through the Fire: Scholarship and Courage."

Board of Regents meet May 20-21

The Board of Regents will meet on campus May 20-21. The Board's business meeting is Saturday, May 21, 7:30 a.m. in the Loyalty Board Room and is open to interested members of the campus community. Pre-meeting materials can be viewed at http://katie.luther.edu. Look for the Board of Regents site under the "my courses" section on the left hand side of the page. A sub-folder contains May 2011 documents.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Reservation request

Reservations for the Family Reunion and Fun Festival on Wednesday, May 25 must be submitted to the President's Office by Friday, May 13. Event includes: food, games, prizes for kids of all ages, inflatable games, live polka music, a history walk, chances to win a one-of-a-kind bicycle and the announcement of the Staff Excellence Award. There is a rumor that the President's Cabinet may be on the grill team. All are welcome.

College Council executive summary

May 4: College Council reviewed the 2011-12 budget and a list of summer projects that will be presented to the Board of Regents May 20. Essential components of the projected 2011-12 budget are: 630 first-year and 40 transfer students; a 1.5 percent increase to pool for faculty and staff compensation; a revenue equivalent student of 2,223; total revenues at $109,046,694 and total expenses at $108,833,263. Non-mandatory transfers to plant total $161,995, leaving a surplus of $51,436.

On April 28-29 financial aid consultants Jim Scannell and Kathy Kurz visited with many faculty and staff to assess ways in which financial aid can be distributed to return more net revenue while achieving enrollment goals. They will develop an econometric model to assist the Admissions and Financial Aid offices with enrollment management. The Scannell and Kurz report will arrive in late June to be used in enrolling the entering class of 2012.

No events this week, nor during finals

A Campus Programming reminder to all that Tuesday, May 10 through Sunday, May 15 is considered Finals Prep Week and is intended to provide additional space for students to prepare for tests, papers and finals. These six days are set aside for academic preparation for finals, and Luther does not schedule public events during this time, nor during finals week. Exceptions include only athletic events, social gatherings, Cool Aid, Student Research Symposium and Senior Recognition Day.

Library books due May 13

May 13 is the due date for books checked out from the main stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, May 8. Books may be renewed by emailing <library>. The new due date is Dec. 10, Reading Day of fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (two years) will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." You may "View your account" online at library.luther.edu to see what you have checked out.

Bentdahl Commons scheduling guidelines

Official guidelines are finalized for use and scheduling of Bentdahl Commons. As you consider use of this beautiful space, take a look at the Commons guidelines. Book signing May 21

Luther College Book Shop will host a book signing session with author and Luther alumnus Theodor Robert Jacobsen Saturday, May 21, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Luther Book Shop. Written for children of all ages, "Hallowed Ground: A Luther College Legacy" is the story of Jacobsen attending the Luther 100th anniversary celebration with his grandfather when he was six years old. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Position appointments announced

Jennifer Self has accepted a part-time position in the Library as user services public services specialist.  A search is in progress to replace Jennifer as coordinator for music organizations and marketing.

Luther College President Richard Torgerson announces the appointment of Keley Smith-Keller as director of the Career Center. Smith-Keller, currently the director and coordinator of Project Prosper Grant at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, will join the Luther staff June 1.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Kate Narveson served as guest editor for Women Devotional Writers of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, a special double issue of ANQ: A Quarterly Journal of Short Articles, Notes and Reviews, 24:1-2 (2011). She also wrote the introduction, "'Assistances and Encouragements in the Ways of Piety': Conceptions of Private Devotion in Early Modern England."

Amy Engelsdorfer will present a paper, "Open and Affirming: Music and Inclusiveness in the United Church of Christ," at the Christian Congregational Music: Local and Global Perspectives conference in September at Ripon College Cuddesdon at Oxford University.

Alfredo Alonso Estenoz published his article "The Batrachomyomachia (Battle of the Frogs and Mice) in the Context of Borges's 'The Immortal'" in the most recent issue of the journal Variaciones Borges (University of Pittsburgh, April 2011).

Bach benefit concert May 15

Luther music faculty members will perform an all-Bach concert Sunday, May 15 at
2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Decorah to benefit the First Lutheran Pastor's Discretionary Fund, used to help area residents in times of crisis. The concert is open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken.

Works included in the concert are Brandenburg Concertos No. 3 and 5, Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major, BWV 552 and Sonata in D Major, BWV 1028 for viola and harpsichord. 

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Softball won its second consecutive conference tournament title May 7, defeating Coe, 6-5. Norse solo homeruns by Shari Huber '13 and Lauran Snyder '12 sent the game into extra innings, and Morgan Franklin '13 hit a walk-off homerun in the eighth for the win. The win secured an automatic berth to the NCAA III National Tournament, was Luther's 21st in a row, and made the Norse's overall record 37-4.

Men's tennis captured their fifth consecutive IIAC championship May 7. The Norse defeated Cornell, 5-1, in the semifinal match, and Coe, 5-1, in the finals. Samriddh Burman '11 won both his singles matches. In doubles, Scott Sundstrom and Ramesh Karki, and Nick Mozena and Harrison Whitely won both doubles matches. The Norse are now 17-7.

Baseball defeated Central May 7, 13-1 and 5-1. Chris Erikson '13 was three for five with four RBI. The Norse are now 23-17.

MISCELLANEOUS

International student friends 2011-12

Forty new international students are coming to Luther College from 32 countries, and they'd like to share their cultures, as well as learn about yours. The Diversity Center is seeking individuals, couples and families to serve as friends to international students for the 2011-2012 academic year. Mollie and her Polka Band

Remember Luther's own Mollie Busta and her polka music? Mollie and her Polka Band will be here for the Family Reunion and Fun Festival on May 25. So bring your lawn chair or picnic blanket and come to hear some great music on Bentdahl Commons. 

Got extra meals? Swipe it

I-ImpactNow, a non-profit organization created by Luther students this year, is accepting meal donations towards the development of an irrigation-based farming cooperative in Ethiopia. The project will unite 50 farmers to grow food in a collaborative setting, produce marketable crops for the growth of their families and encourage a sense of empowerment in Ethiopian communities. Visit the I-ImpactNow table outside Marty's to help accomplish this mission.

'These Come From Trees'

You may have noticed leafy stickers with the message "These Come From Trees" appearing on paper towel dispensers all over campus. These stickers are meant to remind everybody to use only as much as they need. Please don't remove the stickers and do save paper towels. Try using one less than you would normally use. It all adds up.

Chris Norton fundraiser

The fourth annual Bikin' Bondu on June 18 will benefit Luther student Chris Norton and Doug Eshelman, residents of Bondurant, Iowa, who both suffered severe spine injuries.  The ride will be on the Chichaqua Valley Bike Trail from Bondurant to Baxter and back. Stops include Valeria, Mingo, Ira and Baxter.  Registration for the ride is $20. To register, visit the website http://www.bikeiowa.com. For more information, contact Jeff Cook, (515) 491-3355.

Gundersen Lutheran will host a Bike and Trail Safety Clinic Saturday May 14 from
