Interlibrary Loan closed for requests

The Library's Interlibrary Loan department will be closed for Luther patrons' loan and article requests from June 30-July 12, due to staff vacation. Requests submitted prior to June 30 will be processed. All interlibrary loans that arrive June 30-July 12 will be handled as usual by the ILL summer student worker. EVENTS

'Young Mother' on display in Preus

"Young Mother," an 1885 Herbjørn Gausta painting, is now on display in Preus Library after 10 months of restoration at the Midwest Art Conservation Center, Minneapolis. The restoration project is one of several paintings restored by the Luther College Fine Art Collection.

Casterton Interim Book Shop Director

Deanna Casterton, coordinator of the Book Shop, has been named Interim Director of the Book Shop. Deanna began working in the Book Shop in 1987 as a student worker and joined the staff as a regular employee in 1991. She was the last person to manage the Gift Shop as an independent store from 1997 to 2006. On Aug. 1, Deanna will assume the position vacated by Jim Haemker on his retirement.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Sean D. Burke led a retreat titled, "Reading the Bible with Heart and Mind" for All Saints' Episcopal Church of San Francisco at The Bishop's Ranch in Healdsburg, Calif., June 10-12.

Brian Caton organized and contributed to a panel, "Implementing a Critical South Asian History Survey Course: a Roundtable Discussion," at a conference on "Teaching South Asia Critically" at Oakton Community College, Des Plaines, Ill. on April 22.

Brooke Joyce's music was recently performed at a festival sponsored by the Iowa Composers Forum in Cedar Rapids. His choral work, "Four Latin Canons," was featured on the evening program. Luther alumnus Sky Macklay's ('10) "Lake Dublin" was featured earlier in the day.

Jon Christy presented a response to the book, "Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses," following a keynote address featuring the book's co-author, Josipa Roksa, at the Higher Education Data Sharing (HEDS) Consortium Annual Forum in Philadelphia, June 12-15. Christy was elected vice-chair/secretary of the organization for 2011-12.

Three alumni granted Fulbright awards

The Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has announced that Sean Anderson, Tyler Dryg and James Feinstein, three Luther students who graduated in the class of 2011, have been selected for Fulbright awards for 2011-12. Anderson will serve as an English teaching assistant in Columbia. Dryg received a research grant for a research project on late medieval history in Germany. Feinstein will serve as an English teaching assistant in Thailand.

And finally…

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.
