Iowa Private College Week

Luther will again participate in the statewide annual Iowa Private College Week, Monday-Friday, Aug. 1-5.

Based on numbers from previous years, we anticipate 350-400 prospective students will visit our campus during IPCW. This number represents approximately 10 percent of our total visitors for the year. It is crucial that we make a good first impression on these prospective students and families.

To achieve this goal, we are asking Luther faculty and staff to lend us a helping hand during IPCW. We hope you will join us and engage in conversations with prospective students and their parents during daily breaks at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. These 30-minute breaks will be held in the lobby of the Dahl Centennial Union.

As you know, competition among colleges and universities for qualified students is fierce. Research tells us that prospective students' contact with faculty and staff plays a critical role in student recruitment. Therefore, much of our success is dependent on you and your willingness to interact with our prospects.

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to spare a half hour for one or more of the daily break sessions (11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Aug. 1-5), contact Marty, 387-1289 or <bergmart>.

Luther Book Shop Ridiculous Day Sale

As part of Decorah's Ridiculous Day event Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., the Luther Book Shop will be offering a ridiculous extra 20 percent discount on already low prices from our clearance area. Items may include specially marked clothing, books, gift and emblematic items.

Fine Arts Collection inventory

The Fine Arts Collection is beginning its summer inventory. If you have artwork that was left by a previous office tenant, or if stray work is hanging around your office suite, contact Kate Elliott at <ellika03> to have the piece picked up and checked back into the collection. Directory photos at Public Information

The Public Information Office will take faculty and staff headshots in July and August. Come in if your Directory photo is more than five years old or if you want a new photo taken. Come in July 18-22, Aug. 1-5 or Aug. 8-12 between 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. or call for an appointment. There is no charge for this service.

Health Care Council Executive Summary

May 26, 2011: Discussion continued on office visit and vision co-pays. Third quarter Caremark pharmaceuticals report was reviewed. The 2011-12 health care budget was reviewed. The July 1 reinsurance rates increase was noted. The council recommended increasing single premium $7/month and increasing family/employee + one premium by $10/month. Premium increase information has been sent to plan participants.

Erickson retirement reception July 19

Join Dining Services at a retirement party for Grace Erickson Tuesday, July 19 at 2 p.m. in the Caf. After 35 years at Luther, Grace will be retiring and we're having a celebration for her friends and family. Stop by between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for snacks and conversation.

Haemker retirement reception July 19

A retirement reception for Jim Haemker will be held Tuesday, July 19 from 2-4 p.m. to thank him for his service to Luther as director of the Book Shop and Union Services. Join us in the Addams Lounge, upper level of the Union, to bid Jim farewell. Deanna Casterton, Book Shop coordinator, will assume the position of interim director. 

Luther at the Iowa State Fair

Luther will have a table in the Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Aug. 11-21 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. The purpose is to gain some additional exposure in the growing Des Moines area.

Distinguished Lecturers announced

Campus Programming, in connection with Paideia and the Center for Ethics and Public Life, is pleased to announce the Distinguished Lecturers for the 2011-12 school year are Tracy Kidder and Nicholas Kristof.

Tracy Kidder will hold an "Ask the Author" session with incoming freshmen Wednesday, Aug 31, 7-8 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall, and will serve as the Sesquicentennial Convocation speaker Thursday, Sept 1, 9:40 a.m. Kidder is the author of Strength In What Remains, and Mountains Beyond Mountains.  

Nicholas Kristoff will address the significance of international attention and service in a lecture Thursday, Feb. 2 , 7 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. He is a New York Times columnist and co-author, with his wife Sheryl WuDunn, of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

Instructional soccer camp spots open

There are still spots open for children ages 8-14 at Luther's Instructional Soccer Camp July 24-28. Luther's camp offers Iowa and the Midwest top-quality soccer instruction. The camp enables aspiring players to learn the basic techniques and tactics of the game in an atmosphere of positive encouragement and support, while advanced players receive collegiate/pro-level training. Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt.

Last soccer mini-camp of the summer

The final Luther soccer mini-camp of the summer will be held July 25-28 for children ages 4-7. There is still time to sign up. The camp offers tremendous instruction from qualified staff for the boys and girls ages 4-7. The purpose of the camp is to introduce mini-campers to soccer by doing it the right way. Fundamental skills associated with the game are taught alongside simple concepts and ideas. A child’s first steps in the game become a perfect foundation to further development. Each camper receives a t-shirt and daily snacks.

Position opening

The Center for Global Learning is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills for a 12-month position (approximately 35-hours per week during the academic year, 15-hours per week during the summer). For more details see hr website at: https://www2.luther.edu/hr/staffvacancies/.

Welcome new faculty

Luther will welcome more than 20 new faculty members to the Luther community this fall. Check the next editions of Tuesday for information about new faculty members.

Rebecca Burkes will join the Luther faculty as an assistant professor of management in August. She holds the bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, Austin, the master's degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and the juris doctor degree from Baylor University School of Law. 

Lea Donhowe Lovelace will join the Luther College faculty as visiting faculty in the art department for the 2011-12 academic year. Lovelace holds the bachelor's degree from Luther and the master's degree in art education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Kyle Fey will join the Luther College faculty in August as an assistant professor of mathematics. He holds the bachelor's degree from Dordt College and the master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Hannah Leffler will join the Luther faculty as an adjunct flute professor of music. She holds the bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Oklahoma City University and the master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Andrew Wannigman will join the Luther College faculty in August as an alumni guest lecturer of music. He holds the bachelor's degree from Luther and the master's degree from the New England Conservatory, Boston.

Sustainability tip

Clean the driveway with a broom, not a hose. Instead of hosing down your driveway, sweep it off. By using water to clean it, you not only use up good drinking water, you also send contaminants such as oil, fertilizers, pesticides and detergents into the storm drain. These contaminants quickly make their way to streams and rivers, harming fish and aquatic life, and increasing the growth of algae. Wellness tip

Tips for staying healthy this summer:

·       Drink before, during and after exercise. It is essential. Adults should drink 12 cups of water a day, children 5-8 cups a day.

·       Start slowly. It takes about a week to get used to exercising in the heat.

·       Workout when it's cooler - morning or evening. If you plan to exercise outdoors, avoid the hours between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Exercise with a friend and apply sunscreen while in the sun.

·       Try indoor exercises during the summer, invest in a couple of good exercise videos and equipment.

·       Wear light colored, loose fitting clothes with "wicking" material. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect you from the sun.

·       Be especially careful on humid days, because your body's natural air-conditioner-sweat evaporation-doesn't work nearly as well. If the heat index is especially high, don't risk exercising outside.

·       Avoid hot and heavy meals.

·       Know when to stop. If you start to feel dizzy exhausted or disoriented. Stop. Find shade, drink water, breathe deeply and cool down.
