Memorial service for Sylvia Nabukeera

A prayer service in remembrance of Sylvia Gift Nabukeera will be held Thursday, July 28, 11 a.m. in the Main Hall of the Luther Center for Faith and Life.

Sylvia, age 25, a 2010 graduate of Luther, died June 24 in Nairobi, Kenya. The memorial service at Luther is in conjunction with the scheduled funeral service for Sylvia in her home country of Uganda.

As the Luther community grieves Sylvia's death we are also offering support for her family. The family is in need of immediate financial assistance to pay the costs of bringing her body home for burial. They also face ongoing financial challenges because Sylvia was helping siblings with education and living expenses.

Nabukeera dies in Nairobi, Kenya

Sylvia Gift Nabukeera, a 2010 graduate from Uganda, died June 24 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Luther community mourns the death of this incredible and vibrant young woman. Her faith, smile and commitment touched the lives of many.  

Luther held an informal gathering of remembrance Thursday, July 21. We encourage members of the community to reach out to one another in this time of grief. Luther also offers counseling and support services; please call 387-1020 for information.

Our grief is complicated by the lack of information about Sylvia's death. Nairobi police believe she died June 24.  The Rev. Peter Ndungu, director of Friends of Ngong Road in Nairobi, identified Sylvia’s body at a morgue. An autopsy is pending and the investigation into the cause of her death will continue.

Prayers for Norway

The Prayer Chapel in the back of the Center for Faith and Life is available for candle lighting in memory of the victims of the Oslo bombing and the attack on the Island of Utoya. The community is invited to stop by and offer a prayer or light a candle. The chapel is available throughout the day, and candles will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Wednesday.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Royal Visit Oct. 13 - Ticket Lottery

Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway will visit Luther Oct. 13 in honor of the college's Sesquicentennial Celebration.

The royal visit will include a morning convocation in the CFL. President Richard Torgerson will present Their Majesties with the Spirit of Luther Award.

Tickets for the Oct. 13 Royal Convocation will be distributed through an online lottery process. Between Aug. 16 and Sept. 8, students, faculty and staff can request to be included in the ticket lottery through this website: http://www2.luther.edu/150/events/royal_visit/.

Directory photos at Public Information

The Public Information Office will take faculty and staff headshots in July and August. Come in if your Directory photo is more than five years old or if you want a new photo taken. Come in Aug. 1-5 or Aug. 8-12 between 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. or call for an appointment. There is no charge for this service.

Fine Arts Collection inventory

The Fine Arts Collection is beginning its summer inventory. Iowa Private College Week

Luther will again participate in the statewide annual Iowa Private College Week, Monday-Friday, Aug. 1-5.

We anticipate 350-400 prospective students will visit campus during IPCW, representing approximately 10 percent of our total visitors for the year. It is crucial that we make a good first impression.

We are asking Luther faculty and staff to lend us a hand-join us and engage in conversations with prospective students and their parents during daily breaks at
11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. These 30-minute breaks will be held in the Dahl Centennial Union lobby.

Research tells us that prospective students' contact with faculty and staff plays a critical role in student recruitment. Much of our success is dependent on you and your willingness to interact with our prospects.

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to spare a half hour for one or both of the daily break sessions (11 a.m., 2:30 p.m.,

History Walk performance

The campus community is invited to attend The History Walk Tuesday, July 26,
7:30 p.m. Created in celebration of the college's sesquicentennial, The History Walk is a performance event where the audience is led on a guided tour across campus and costumed actors bring to life moments from Luther's past. Weston Noble Alumni Choir reunion

The fifth annual Weston Noble Alumni Choir began rehearsals July 24. Choir members from Luther classes 1949-2001 will gather for four days of rehearsals.

The choir will perform Thursday, July 28 at 8:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The concert, open to the public with no charge for admission, will immediately follow the opening ceremonies for Nordic Fest.

All-Band Alumni Reunion July 29-31

Professors emeriti Frederick Nyline and Weston Noble will be honored at a Luther All-Band Alumni Reunion July 29-31, bringing together hundreds of former student musicians who performed in the bands directed by Nyline and Noble over the past 63 years.

The band will perform Sunday, July 31 at 3 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall.

Distinguished Lecturers announced

Campus Programming, in connection with Paideia and the Center for Ethics and Public Life, is pleased to announce the Distinguished Lecturers for 2011-12: Tracy Kidder and Nicholas Kristof.

Kidder will hold an "Ask the Author" session with incoming freshmen Wednesday, Aug 31, 7-8 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall, and will serve as the Sesquicentennial Convocation speaker Thursday, Sept 1, 9:40 a.m. Kidder is the author of "Strength In What Remains," and "Mountains Beyond Mountains."  

Kristoff will address the significance of international attention and service in a lecture Thursday, Feb. 2, 7 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. He is a New York Times columnist and co-author, with his wife Sheryl WuDunn, of "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide."

Welcome new staff

Eric Ellingsen, of Apple Valley, Minn., has been named coordinator for music organizations and marketing. Ellingsen, a 1999 Luther graduate, will begin his duties as coordinator Aug. 1. He holds the bachelor of arts degree in vocal music.

Welcome new faculty

Luther will welcome more than 20 new faculty members to the Luther community this fall. Check upcoming editions of Tuesday for information about them.

Thomas C. Johnson will join the Luther College faculty in August as a postdoctoral teaching fellow in the communication studies. Johnson holds the bachelor of arts degree from Saint John's University and the master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Laurie Iudin-Nelson (Modern Languages, Russian Studies) was invited to be the key presenter at Indiana University's Summer Workshop in Slavic, East European and Central Asian Languages (REEI, Russian and East European Institute) to lead workshops on the topic of music in foreign language pedagogy.  Nearly 50 teachers from throughout the world attended the workshop, including speakers of 23 languages. Iudin-Nelson also led sessions on beginning balalaika technique and folk songs.  Indiana University's summer Slavic Workshop attracts about 300 students for its intensive summer language program.

Johnson chosen for select Ultimate team

Luther student Eric Johnson is one of 15 players selected for the NexGen Ultimate Tour, an ultimate frisbee team composed of the best up-and-coming talent from colleges around the world. The NexGen Tour consists of 15 stops throughout North America where the NexGen team will offer lessons, training sessions and compete in games against some of the best club teams in the world. Sustainability tip

Give a second life to usable discards. Home furnishings, clothing, construction project leftovers in good condition are still useful once you are done with them. By donating items to nonprofit organizations you save resources. Broken, torn, stained, worn out or damaged items, or items that require repair or cleaning are not usually accepted. Wellness tip

Apply Sunscreen Frequently

Nothing can ruin an otherwise great day like severe sunburn. In June the FDA announced new guidelines for sun protection and offered other advice for avoiding sunburns and skin damage.

·      Most people don’t put on enough sunscreen. Doctors say that to be fully covered, apply the equivalent of a shot glass full of lotion to your body.

·      Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes to two hours.

·      Make sure sunscreen is "broad-spectrum" and protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

·      Choose an SPF of at least 30. Doctors say that anything over SPF 50 doesn't really mean anything.

·      New guidelines will no longer allow sunscreens to claim they are "water proof" or "sweat proof." They can claim to be "water-resistant" but doctors and scientists say sunscreen still needs to be applied every 90 minutes to two hours. Borrowed from: http://tinyurl.com/summerwellness.
