ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nov. 3-4 staff meetings

The November staff meeting will consist of a recap of the fall Board of Regents meeting, an update on sesquicentennial plans and the "Ten Most Interesting Questions the Development Office Receives." The college will also recognize employees marking five-year anniversaries. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 4 at 9 a.m.  

Fall Regents meeting

The Regents will meet on campus Oct. 29-30. They will review and discuss the work of Task Group 150, the 2009-10 audit, fall budget adjustments, the land use management plan and debt financing options for renovating Miller-Dieseth. Board materials can be viewed at http://katie.luther.edu. Look for the Board of Regents site under the "my courses" section on the left hand side of the page. A sub-folder contains the October meeting materials.

150th celebration

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

HR health conversation announcement

One out of three women suffers from urinary incontinence: uncontrolled leakage of urine from the body. Urinary incontinence can limit lifestyles and relationships. While some conditions are temporary and can be managed with simple therapy or medicine, there are advanced treatment options available in Decorah.

On Wednesday, Nov. 10 Winneshiek Medical Center is offering a free urinary incontinence seminar, 5:30-7 p.m. in the lower level conference rooms at the medical center. The conversation will be facilitated by Brad Orvis, urologist with Decorah Clinic Physicians-Mayo Health System.

Luther Reuse Sales

A replacement for the annual Luther auction, Luther Reuse Sales will offer a variety of items no longer used by the college.  The sales will be held in the Ashmore-Jewell Barn near Baker Village.

The Reuse Sales, a project of Luther Sustainability, are held on selected dates throughout the school year.

Items will also be auctioned on the Luther Reuse Sale website, http://www2.luther.edu/sustainability/waste-recycling/reusesale/.

Office Supplies Reuse Station

From staplers to scissors and pens to paper clips, the Luther Office Supplies Reuse Station provides students, faculty and staff with the opportunity to sustainably dispose of and acquire office and school supplies.

Located in Room 376 in the Valders Hall of Science, the Reuse Station is open
8 a.m.- 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Faculty, staff and students are invited to donate used office and school supply items that are no longer needed.

All Saints Day Chapel Nov. 1

All Saints Day Chapel will be held Nov. 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. College Ministries would like help in identifying children born or adopted in the Luther community in the last year as well as the names of those loved ones who have passed away. Employees, their spouses and children, and students' parents and siblings will be listed in the bulletin. There will be an opportunity to light candles and name other saints to be remembered. Lutheran Festival of Writing at Luther

"The Vibrant Word: A Lutheran Festival of Writing," Oct. 29-31 at Luther, welcomes everyone interested in stories and poems. Thirty authors will read their work and keynote speakers poet Robert Cording and novelist René Steinke will give presentations. Former campus pastor Norene Smith preaches at Sunday worship. Luther faculty, staff and students can register at no charge. ACM's Newberry Library semester

The fall 2011 directors of the ACM Newberry Library Seminar semester, Diane Lichtenstein and Linda Sturtz, will hold a brown bag informational for faculty that have students with interest in the program Friday, Oct. 29 from noon-1 p.m. in the Bunche Room. The seminar next fall is titled "Crossing Boundaries" and focuses on topics related to geographic, national, racial/ethnic and gender role boundaries. 

SAC presents Relient K, Angel Taylor

Grammy nominated Relient K and the highly-praised Angel Taylor will perform at Luther Friday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. in the Regents Center Main Gym.  Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $27, available at the Box Office or online: http://www2.luther.edu/programming/boxoffice/.

'Haunted Lab' Oct. 30

Luther College physics department will hosting its annual "Haunted Lab" on Saturday, Oct. 30, featuring spooky hands-on science demonstrations that will entertain people of all ages.

The family-oriented Haunted Lab will be open from 6-9 p.m. on the first floor of Valders Hall of Science on the Luther campus. Visitors may attend the lab any times during the three-hour show. Enter though the southeast entrance on the lowest level of Valders. Signs will guide visitors to the Haunted Lab.

Oneota Winds present concert Oct. 30

Oneota Winds, a new faculty woodwind quintet, will present a concert Saturday,
Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. Performers include Luther faculty members Heather Armstrong, flute, Michael Chesher, clarinet, Carol Hester, flute, Helen James, bassoon, and Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, horn. They will be joined by junior Erik Wadman, percussion. The group will perform works by Valerie Coleman, Franz Danzi, Astor Piazolla and Maurice Ravel.

Residence hall trick-or-treating

Luther residence hall trick-or-treating is Sunday, Oct. 31, 5-7:30 p.m. in the first-year residence halls. Luther community members are welcome to bring their families trick-or-treating through Ylvisaker, Olson Hall and Brandt Hall. Participating rooms will have an orange pumpkin on the door. For children, there will also be cookie decorating in Olson, craft making in Brandt and games in Ylvisaker. Join us for trick-or-treating in the halls where the weather is always nice.

In conjunction with residence hall trick-or-treating, APO, a service fraternity, will be collecting loose change to help fund Park and Recreation activities for area youth and families in need.

Fair Trade Fest Nov. 2

Luther College SEEDS will hold a Fair Trade Fest Tuesday, Nov. 2, 5:30-10:30 p.m. in Marty's Cybercafé. Fair Trade Fest is open to the public with no charge for admission. Fair Trade Fest is an opportunity for SEEDS to inform students of many of the social justice issues occurring in the world and offer steps that can be taken to stop those injustices. Their mission is to raise awareness of the problems as well as to celebrate the ways people are fighting back. Fair-trade goods on sale include coffee, jewelry and apparel. Many Luther student-led music and dance groups will be performing.

Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Nov. 2

Ginger Meyette will present a Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Tuesday, Nov. 2 at
7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. A reception will be held in the CFL Qualley Lounge following the presentation. Meyette's lecture will explore the concept of transforming service, and service as a catalyst for transformation through an empowerment lens.

Religion Forum Nov. 4

John Maraldo, professor from the University of North Florida, will present the Religion Forum "Are Religions Only a Matter of Belief? An Alternative View" Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall.

Take a Kid to a Game Nov. 6

Luther Athletes Serving Others will sponsor Take a Kid to a Game day Saturday,
Nov. 6, 1-4 p.m. at Carlson Stadium. LASO invites children in kindergarten through fifth grade to attend the Luther football game against the University of Dubuque and sit in the stands with Luther student-athletes. 'Professor Kubinek Meets the Symphony'

A lunatic is coming to Iowa, and he's taking over the Orchestra. Luther will present the Iowa premiere of "Professor Kubinek Meets the Symphony" Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall.

Tickets for the performance are on sale at the Box Office, 387-1357, or may be purchased online at http://centerstage.luther.edu. Ticket prices are $23, $21 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. "Professor Kubinek" is part of Luther's 2010-11 Center Stage Series of professional performing arts events.

Mallory Marlatt '10 will serve as the college's acting director of music tours and marketing during the maternity leave of Jennifer Self, the college's coordinator for music organizations and marketing since 2008.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Todd Green gave an invited lecture at the J.M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, on Oct. 19. The title of his lecture was "Making Mountains Out of Minarets: The Newest Chapter in Europe's Resistance to Islam."

Robert Shedinger gave a lecture titled "Engaging Islam Islamically: The Problem of Religion in Interreligious Dialogue" at DePaul University Oct. 18. The lecture was jointly sponsored by the DePaul University Religious Studies Department, Muslim Student Association, Center for Interfaith Engagement and the Islamic World Studies Program.

Social work program faculty presented at the Council on Social Work Education annual conference in Portland in October. Britt Rhodes shared strategies for infusing gerontology education into the social work curriculum at the Curriculum Development Institute training at CSWE Oct. 14; Craig Mosher led a panel presentation on Sustainability and Social Work at CSWE on Oct. 15; and Ginger Meyette presented the paper "Grief, Aging, and Lesbians: Intersection of Identities Through a Queer/Feminist Lens" at CSWE on Oct.16.

Rebecca Sullivan's article "Web Research in Academic Libraries" was recently published by the Association of College and Research Libraries as part of a series that documents best practices for college and small university libraries. 

Nancy Gates-Madsen presented the paper "Tales of Disappearance in Juan José Saer's La pesquisa and Eric Stener Carlson's I Remember Julia: Voices of the Disappeared" at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association in Toronto, Oct. 5-9.

Diane Scholl's poem, "St. John's Bible, May, 2005" appears in the Nov. 2 issue of "The Christian Century."

Laurie Iudin-Nelson was a featured guest presenter at a STARTALK seminar for teachers of Russian for grades kindergarten through undergraduate college. STARTALK invited teachers from throughout the United States to the Russian Village of the Concordia Language Villages in Minnesota to participate in the seminar in June and July. Iudin-Nelson's presentations included sessions on folk singing, balalaika instruction and five lectures on various aspects of music as a pedagogical tool for foreign language and culture education.

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Men's soccer defeated Coe Oct. 20, 1-0, Cornell Oct. 23, 5-0, and St. John's University Oct. 24, 3-0. Matt Hoffman '14 scored the game-winner vs. Coe; Mark Fernandes '13, Brock Arend '14, Saul Rosales '13, Dickson Kwatampora '12 and Jason Block '12 scored in the Cornell match; and Rosales, Jason Lentz '11 and Andrew Eisenberg '11scored in the St. John's match.

Women's soccer defeated Coe Oct. 20, 1-0, and defeated Cornell Oct. 23, 7-1. Renee Weeks '12 scored a goal in each game. Dani Meirick '12, Paige Ofstedahl '12, Kirsten Stevens '13 and Maggie Herrity '13 each had a goal in the Cornell game; Anna Grinde '11 had two.

Volleyball won three of four matches at the UW-La Crosse Tournament Oct. 22-23. The Norse defeated UW-River Falls, 3-0, UW-Superior, 3-0 and UW-La Crosse, and lost to Carthage, 2-3. Hannah Walker '14 was named to the all-tournament team. She led the Norse offense with 69 kills.

Football defeated Buena Vista Oct. 23, 26-20. Seth Streeter '13 made two field goals, Chris Reynolds '12 threw for 207 yards and tallied 95 yards on carries. Steven Thompson '12 caught a career-high 10 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle McGivney '12 led the defense with 15 tackles and one forced fumble.
