Nov. 3-4 staff meetings

The November staff meeting will consist of a recap of the fall Board of Regents meeting, an update on sesquicentennial plans and the "Ten Most Interesting Questions the Development Office Receives." The college will also recognize employees marking five-year anniversaries. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 4 at 9 a.m.  

New and improved Luther website

'Around the Clock' sale Nov. 3

The Book Shop will have an "Around the Clock" sale Wednesday, Nov. 3. Admissions Shadow Day Nov. 15

First Shadow Day of the year is Monday, Nov. 15. Many first-year students will host guests as they go through their day's campus activities. Admissions has asked each first-year student to tell faculty if he/she is acting as a host, but we also wanted to remind those who teach first-year students that you will most likely have visitors in your classes. We know that in some sections space may be tight, but please be as welcoming and accommodating as possible. Most visitors will leave after the
2:45 p.m. class period. Thank you.

College donates to Food Pantry

From food plot to pantry, Luther College Gardens planted, produced and donated approximately 70 pounds of potatoes to the Decorah Food Pantry as part of a Luther College Sustainability initiative. The seed potatoes, locally grown potatoes donated by the Luther Cafeteria, were planted by Luther student gardeners in the Luther Gardens in a plot dedicated to the Food Pantry project.

Fair Trade Fest Nov. 2

Luther College SEEDS will hold a Fair Trade Fest Tuesday, Nov. 2, 5:30-10:30 p.m. in Marty's Cybercafé. Fair Trade Fest is open to the public with no charge for admission. Fair Trade Fest is an opportunity for SEEDS to inform students of many of the social justice issues occurring in the world and offer steps that can be taken to stop those injustices. Their mission is to raise awareness of the problems as well as to celebrate the ways people are fighting back. Fair-trade goods on sale include coffee, jewelry and apparel. Many Luther student-led music and dance groups will be performing.

 

Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Nov. 2

 

Ginger Meyette will present a Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Tuesday, Nov. 2 at7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. A reception will be held in the CFL Qualley Lounge following the presentation. Meyette's lecture will explore the concept of transforming service, and service as a catalyst for transformation through an empowerment lens.

 

Norse Pack the Stands night Nov. 2

 

The campus is invited to Luther Volleyball's last home match of the season and the first Norse Pack the Stands night Tuesday, Nov. 2. SAAC and Mabe's pizza are partnering to sponsor Norse Pack the Stands night. The volleyball match will begin at 7:35 p.m.

 

'The Bill Sackter Story' film screening

 

A screening of "A Friend Indeed: The Bill Sackter Story" will be Tuesday, Nov. 2 at

8 p.m. in Valders 206. The film documents the life of Bill Sackter, who after a lifetime of institutionalization, emerged as an international hero for people with disabilities. Mickey Rooney portrayed Sackter in the 1981 TV-movie "Bill."

Teaching discussion Nov. 4

Join us for "Celebrating Common Ground: An Open Forum on Teaching Development," scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 4, 9:45-10:30 a.m. in the Jenson-Noble Choir Room. Religion Forum Nov. 4

John Maraldo, professor from the University of North Florida, will present the Religion Forum "Are Religions Only a Matter of Belief? An Alternative View" Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall.

World Fashion Show and Garage Sale

Come to the World Fashion Show and Garage Sale Friday, Nov. 5 from 7-9 p.m. in the CFA Atrium. All proceeds benefit the Sudan Education Program. In addition to the show and sale, there will also be a portrait booth, henna tattooing and a bake sale. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. 'They Will Stumble' SPIN Theatre presents "They Will Stumble Over the Weight of Our Deep Roots," a participatory performance work, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 5 at 9:30 p.m., Nov. 6 at 1:30 and 9:30 p.m. in the CFA, Studio I. Open to the public with no charge for admission.

Discovery Day Nov. 6

Luther's environmental education class will host Discovery Day Saturday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon on the Luther campus for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Children at Discovery Day will participate in environmentally focused education activities: learning about animal adaptation, tracking, nature's music, creative recycled art and local food investigations.

Take a Kid to a Game Nov. 6

Luther Athletes Serving Others will sponsor Take a Kid to a Game day Saturday, Nov. 6, 1-4 p.m. at Carlson Stadium. LASO invites children in kindergarten through fifth grade to attend the Luther football game against the University of Dubuque and sit in the stands with Luther student-athletes. 'Professor Kubinek Meets the Symphony'

A lunatic is coming to Iowa, and he's taking over the Orchestra. Luther will present the Iowa premiere of "Professor Kubinek Meets the Symphony" Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall.

Ticket prices are $23, $21 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. "Professor Kubinek" is part of Luther's 2010-11 Center Stage Series of professional performing arts events.

Wind and Percussion Ensemble Nov. 9

Luther College Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform in concert Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Dorian Keyboard Festival Nov. 13

Nearly 150 junior high and high school students will take part in the 53rd annual Dorian Keyboard Festival at Luther College. Students will perform in piano, organ and harpsichord recitals Saturday, Nov. 13 beginning at 4:30 p.m., with an honor recital at 7 p.m. that evening. Angeline Jacobson's 100th birthday Angeline Jacobson, Luther professor emerita of library science, will celebrate her 100th birthday Friday, Nov. 5. She served as a reference librarian in Koren and Preus Libraries from 1951 until her retirement in 1976. Her research interests focused on Native Americans. In 1977, Scarecrow Press published her work "Contemporary Native American Literature: A Selected and Partially Annotated Bibliography." She has been a resident of Aase Haugen Homes since November 2005. Greetings can be sent to her at P.O. Box 510, Decorah, IA  52101.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Rachel Vagts, Habitat for Humanity advisor, attended the Habitat for Humanity National Youth Leadership conference in Columbus, Ohio with five Luther students. Jessica Samuelson '12, Alex Mundy '11 and Ross Bansen '11 presented about the history of Can Mountain Day: donating redeemable containers to build affordable housing in Winneshiek County. Also in attendance were Eric Eitrheim '12 and Colleen Foote '12.

Holly Moore presented the paper "Thrasymachus' Blush and Socrates' Performative Elenchos" at the annual meeting of the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy at Fordham University Oct. 17.

Jim Eckblad is teaching a one-week class in early November on "The Life and Times of the Mississippi River." The class is part of the LIFE (Learning Is ForEver) program in Rochester which is supported by Rochester Community and Technical College and University of Minnesota Rochester.

Mark D. Johns presented a paper, "Facebook as a tool for religious fund-raising and support by religious organizations" at the Association of Internet Researchers international conference, Gothenburg, Sweden, Oct. 21-23.

Marv Slind was elected to the board of directors of the Norwegian-American Historical Association.

Harlan Nelson and Richard Cole attended the Seven Rivers Region Fulbright Chapter Meeting at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. The chapter placed first in a national competitive grant application to fund a series of events for Fulbright alumni and visiting Fulbrighters to experience unique cultural/ethnic/ geographic opportunities in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. One of the events will be in Decorah.

Alfredo Alonso Estenoz presented a paper, "The Batrachomyomachia (The Battle of the Frogs and Mice) in the context of Borges's 'The Inmortal'", at the Borges Symposium, University of Pittsburgh, Oct. 15.

Karen Kanakis and Jacob Lassetter, along with pianist David Gomper from the University of Iowa, performed the world premier of the new song cycle "The Anthill" by composer Joe Dangerfield of Coe College on the Coe campus Sunday, Oct. 31.

Wanda Deifelt published an article titled "Advocacy, Political Participation, and Citizenship: Lutheran Contributions to Public Theology" in "Dialog: A Journal of Theology" volume 49, number 2, Summer 2010, p. 108-114.

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Football lost to No. 15 Wartburg Oct. 30, 18-24. The Norse put up 444 yards of total offense against the usually stingy Knights defense. Dan Ridenour '13 posted a career high with 154 yards on 26 carries. With 212 yards of passing on the day, Chris Reynolds '12 became Luther's all-time leader for passing yardage. Kyle McGivney '12 led the defense with 17 tackles, 15 solo.

Men's cross country captured their 32nd IIAC title Oct. 30, their fifth straight. Luther's five scoring runners were Erik Johnson '11, third, Evan Neubauer '13, 11th, Shane Steele '12, 12th, Scott Mittman '14, 15th, and Kyle Buck '11, 16th. Johnson, Neubauer, Steele and Mittman were named to the all-conference team. It is Johnson's fourth time to be so honored. Steve Pasche was named Coach of the Year for the fifth time.

Women's cross country captured their 11th IIAC title, with five runners placing in the top 10. Emma Spoon '12 won the race and earned the MVP title and all-conference honors. Also earning all-conference honors: Ellie Neubauer '11, third, Kim Horner '11, sixth, Christina Storlie '13, eighth, Sarah Lundine '11, tenth, Julia Scheifelbein-Egan '11, 11th, and Melissa Erickson '12, 12th. Anna Murray '12 who placed 15th, was not awarded all-conference honors because the Iowa Conference has a rule that only seven members from one team can earn all-conference. Yarrow Pasche was named the Coach of the Year for the third time.

New Nordic Choir album released

Luther has released the new Nordic Choir album, "We Sing with Joy," a compilation of works performed by Nordic Choir on their 2010 West Coast Tour and on-campus performances. The CD is $20 and available on the Luther website, http://www2.luther.edu/music/recordings/.

Upward Bound seeks employees

 The Luther College Upward Bound program is looking for college students and faculty to work our summer 2011 program. College students need to have completed their sophomore year by the end of May 2011. Faculty tutors can be any level of educator or a person who possesses a unique background that can be shared with high school students.
