Special event parking notice

In order to accommodate the large number of visitors expected for Christmas at Luther we need to make adjustments in our parking area designations.  

The Valders parking lot will be converted to a Disabilities Parking Only lot from 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Alternatives to parking by Valders includes the Preus Library lot, Farwell lot, Regents and the roadway from Valders out to College Drive. 

The lots adjacent the CFL will also be designated as Disabilities Parking Only for the performances but will be available for normal usage during the day until 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

MGB representatives on campus Dec. 6-7

Representatives from Midwest Group Benefits will be on campus Monday, Dec. 6, 3-4 p.m., and Tuesday, Dec. 7, 9-10 a.m., in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union to answer questions on flexible spending accounts and health care questions.

Wellness check-up reminder

Reminder to employees and spouses on the Luther College health care plan. The Wellness check-up form is due by Dec. 31 to Human Resources. You can access the form on the hr.luther.edu website. Failure to turn this in will result in a $25 monthly premium increase. Thank you if you have turned in the form. If you have any questions contact Greg Lonning, <lonningr> or 387-2075.

Digital output cost adjustments

After continued review and study of our complex and changing use of digital output devices (document center, copiers, printers), Luther will adjust costs for digital output effective Jan. 1.

Tuition benefit application due Dec. 1

Luther is pleased to be able to offer its faculty and staff a benefit that is highly unique in today's workplace: higher education for one's dependents. There is a two-step application process for the Tuition Benefit Program.

The first step, the application for Tuition Benefits, is due in Scot Schaeffer's office by Dec. 1. The form is available at https://www2.luther.edu/hr/tuition or in hard copy form from Scot, 387-1430.

Wear clean shoes at Legends

In order to use the Legends Fitness Center facilities, you must be able to change into a clean pair of shoes. The equipment and floors are taking a severe beating due to the dirt being brought into the facility.

Habitat for Humanity staff positions

Applications are now being accepted for two paid staff positions with Habitat's spring break trip. Covered expenses for the selected staff member(s) include housing, meals and land transportation during the service trip. Staff will not be eligible for overtime pay, nor will they be paid more than their normal week's salary. For example, a part-time employees will receive their part-time salary. Ethnic Arts Holiday Bazaar Dec. 2

The annual Holiday Bazaar, sponsored by the Diversity Center, will be Thursday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the Williams Lounge, Dahl Centennial Union.

Stop by to purchase great ethnic gifts including jewelry, household items, toys and musical instruments.

Proceeds go to self-help cooperatives, scholarships-fund and the Luther Ethnic Arts Festival on March 4.

Book signings on Dec. 4 at Book Shop

The Luther Book Shop will host two book signing sessions on Saturday, Dec. 4. The events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Children's book author and illustrator Sue Cornelison will visit and sign copies of her book "The Twelve Days of Christmas in Iowa" as well as other books she has illustrated from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Gregg Narber will visit and sign copies of his book "Murals of Iowa 1886-2006," a comprehensive pictorial study of murals as community art, from 3-4 p.m.

'Christmas in the Union'

'Christmas in the Union' will be Wednesday, Dec. 8. Free games, cookie decorating, hot chocolate and cider, holiday movies, crafts and performances by a variety of Luther singing groups will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Santa will join the festivities about 5 p.m. The cafeteria is will host a holiday feast from 5-7 p.m. featuring turkey, ham, stuffing and fixings. At 5:30 p.m. Luther students are invited to enter an Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest for a chance to win a $75 Best Buy gift card.

'Christmas in the Union' Book Shop event

As part of 'Christmas in the Union,' the Luther Book Shop will serve popcorn and have storewide discounts from 8:45 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Holiday movies will be playing all day.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to enter the annual gingerbread house contest. Participants may use any materials they find to create a miniature holiday-themed house. Entries are due Wednesday, Dec. 8 by 9 a.m. The public will vote from
9:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and the winner will be announced at 4 p.m.

Orville Running art show and sale

Honoring Orville Running's 100th birthday, an art show and sale of Running's work will be held Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4, 2-5 p.m. in Jenson-Noble Music Hall, Room 174 (south-east corner of the building). The sale will include 45 remaining color woodcuts, black-and-white woodcuts, etchings, and some drawings and oils. 

SPORTS RESULTS/SCHEDULE

Wrestling defeated UW-Eau Claire Nov. 23, 28-15

Men's basketball lost to California Lutheran Nov. 26, 49-55, at the Surf's Up Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dane Larson scored 12 points, followed by Tim Merritt with seven, and Tyler Wedemeier and Michael Crocker both with six. The team was defeated by Whitworth University in the final game Nov. 27, 67-86. Larson scored 19 points and Wedemeier had 13 points.

Women's basketball played in the two-day Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic hosted by UW-La Crosse Nov. 27-28. The team lost to the University of Chicago Nov. 27, 55-85. Sam Jewell led all scorers with a career high 26 points. She also led all rebounders with seven. The team defeated Northwestern College Nov. 28, 70-65, in the final day. Jewell scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Taylor Johnson scored 14 points and Katie Etter had 12.

MISCELLANEOUS

Seeking shoes for suicide awareness event

Have pairs of shoes you don't wear anymore? Active Minds at Luther is collecting shoes for an upcoming event on suicide awareness. If you would like to donate shoes, please drop off any shoes at Counseling Services in Larson Hall by Dec. 1. A selected amount of shoes will be donated to Goodwill after the event. Shoes do not need to be in wearable condition.

Ridge Road luminary display

For more than 20 years, Decorah's Ridge Road neighborhood has shared holiday cheer with its display of more than 1,200 luminaries. Come enjoy the sight Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 4-5, from 5-10 p.m.

International education opportunity

The Institute for International Education announces the Freeman-ASIA Program that aims to increase U.S. undergraduate study in East and Southeast Asia by providing information and financial assistance. Award amounts vary from $3,000 for a summer program, to $5,000 for a semester/quarter program, and up to $7,000 for an academic year program. Hymn writing contest

Ethnic Arts recipe request

Please share with us a favorite 'finger-food' recipe from your cultural background or a traditional festive food. Recipes chosen will be showcased at the 2011 Ethnic Arts Festival on Friday, March 4. Please email your recipes to <fosmarda> or bring to the Diversity Center before Jan. 7. Recipe needs to include all ingredients, measurements of ingredients, thorough directions for preparing the dish and the country it is representing (including the U.S.). We also invite contributors and friends to help in the preparation to assure it will be authentic. Any and all recipes are welcome.

Sustainability tip

Tips for a sustainable holiday season:

Give a gift that will help a child be curious about the natural world, such as a zoo membership, an ant/butterfly farm, science kits, a kite, a tree you plant together, live plant kits, or the garden game.

Skip material gifts all together and give an experience instead such as performance/event tickets, a camping trip, cooking classes, a hot air balloon ride; give a service provided by you or a local business such as a baby-sitting gift certificate, a massage, a dinner out, hire a chef in, or dance lessons.

For adults, gifts you make yourself often have more meaning (and a smaller environmental impact than mass-marketed products): cook or bake a gift, write a poem or story about the person, or glaze some pottery.
