Close offices during convocation

Convocations are an important way the Luther community gathers to affirm its mission. All are encouraged to attend Thursday's convocation at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL. No classes will meet during convocation time, and if possible, offices should close so all can attend. Eric Olson '85, U.N. economic affairs officer, will speak on the "United Nations' Quest to End Extreme Poverty." Faculty and staff should encourage students to participate as well.

Board of Regents workshop/materials

The Regents will hold their biennial workshop at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Feb. 10-12. Pre-meeting materials can be viewed at http://katie.luther.edu. Look for the Board of Regents site under the "my courses" section on the left-hand side of the page. A sub-folder contains February 2012 documents.

Vice president and dean for student life finalists

Four finalists for the position of vice president and dean for student life will interview on campus in February: Tanya Winegard, associate vice president for student life at Creighton University; David Vasquez, campus pastor at Luther College; Rosalyn Eaton-Neeb, associate dean for first-year students at St. Olaf College; and Corey Landstrom, assistant dean of students at Colgate University. Candidate files may be accessed on Katie in the VP-STUDENT-LIFE-2011 "course" under the President's Office candidate searches folder.

Open Forums for the candidates will be held at 11 a.m. in Mott/Borlaug on these dates: Monday, Feb. 13, Winegard; Wednesday, Feb. 15, Vasquez; Monday, Feb. 27, Landstrom; and Wednesday, Feb. 29, Eaton-Neeb. All are invited.

Search for director of Human Resources

After 15 years as director of Human Resources, Roy Prigge will retire May 31. We look forward to thanking him for his steadfast service later this spring. A search for a new director of HR will begin immediately with the following persons serving on the search committee: Mona Nelson, chair; Carolyn Schwendeman, Jon Christy, Marsha Wenthold, Bob Shedinger and Diane Tacke. Comprehensive fee increase

In a January conference call meeting, the Board of Regents approved a comprehensive fee increase of 3.91 percent for 2012-13, increasing the comprehensive fee from $40,585 to $42,170.

Business card deadline Feb. 8

The Publications office is accepting orders for business cards online at www2.luther.edu/printwork. Order in quantity increments of 250. Send a sample of an old card via campus mail to AJ Perling. Submit orders prior to Wednesday, Feb. 8. The publications office gathers business card orders at the start of each semester; please note that orders printed individually at other times cost considerably more to run.

Employee blood screenings

Health Service will hold employee blood screenings Feb. 16, 21 and 23, March 6 and 29, and April 12 and 19. The office prefers faculty and staff sign up for the earliest dates first. Since this is an even year your screenings will be paid for. Register online at health.luther.edu by clicking on Employee Blood Screening and following the directions carefully.

Facilities services update

Work is taking place in the CFL to replace ceiling tiles and add door holders to certain doors. Use caution when passing through the building as work is completed overhead. The projects should be completed within a few weeks. The elevator in Main is scheduled for repair the first part of February. The repair should eliminate the rough ride and noise when the elevator is in operation.

Mandatory student employment supervisor meetings

All faculty and staff members who directly supervise student employees at any time during the year are required to attend one of four mandatory student employment supervisor meetings on Wednesday, Feb. 8. These meetings will be held in the CRH at 9 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., with each lasting approximately one hour. Items that will be covered include hiring process changes for 2012-13, payroll procedures, corrective action protocol and a discussion on the importance of work-study as a retention tool. Please plan on joining us for one of these sessions. Attendance will be taken.

Fundraising continues for 'Luther Neighbors' project with HFH

The Winter 2012 issue of the "Luther Alumni Magazine" incorrectly reported that construction had begun on the "Luther Neighbors" Habitat for Humanity house. The "Luther Neighbors" house will undergo construction in Fall 2012 on the lot adjacent to the Habitat for Humanity house pictured in the magazine. Fundraising for the "Luther Neighbors" house—a project of the college's sesquicentennial—continues. Parent Portal

The Office for Financial Services, Registrar's office, Financial Aid and LIS are excited to have the Parent Portal available for parents to assist their son or daughter with their financial responsibilities as well as to view grades and class schedule. A student can grant permission to a parent to view the student’s financial and/or academic information via http://my.luther.edu. Wanted: Teams for Wii Bowling

Sign up now for Wii Bowling League to be held Feb. 13-March 9 in the Book Shop. Teams of four will bowl once a week. All students, faculty and staff may join. Victim counselor training sessions

Luther College will host the Helping Services for Northeast Iowa 24-hour victim counselor training sessions Feb. 21, 23, 28 and March 1, 6 and 8. Sessions will be held from 6-10 p.m. in Loyalty Hall. Anyone interested in volunteering with Helping Services' 24-hour crisis line should attend. A light meal/refreshments will be provided at no cost. Trial change in chapel schedule for 2012 spring semester

In an ongoing effort to be attentive to changes in the patterns of the community, this spring semester the campus will gather for weekday chapel on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Other than for special occasions such as convocation on Feb. 2 and the Black History Month Conference on Feb. 16, there will not be chapel on Thursdays. At this point, this change is not permanent but a trial for the 2012 spring semester. The campus pastors will be available for conversation on Thursdays during the chapel time both in the Union and the CFA Atrium.

Wellness brown bag lunch

Wellness will host a brown bag lunch, Tuesday, Jan. 31 at noon in Valders 206. "In The Family" is an excellent video on the role genetics plays with breast and ovarian cancer. If you have a family history of cancer this is a must see video. For more information contact Greg Lonning <lonningr>.

'Pursuit of the Spiritual' exhibit

Luther will host "Pursuit of the Spiritual," an exhibit of paintings by Chicago artist Salah Mubarek, Feb. 1-March 16 in the CFL.

Mubarek’s exhibit will coincide with Luther's ninth annual Black History Conference, Feb. 15-16. Located on the upper level of the CFL, the exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Spring Convocation lecture Feb. 2

Luther alumnus Eric Olson, an economic affairs officer for the Department of Economic and Social Affairs in the United Nations Secretariat, will present the college's Spring Convocation lecture Thursday, Feb. 2 at 9:40 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Olson's address, titled "The United Nations' Quest to End Extreme Poverty," is part of a day-long theme focusing on global human rights issues.

Kristof to host afternoon conversation

Farwell Distinguished Lecturer Nicholas Kristof will present an afternoon conversation, "Turning Oppression Into Opportunity: A discussion about gender equality" as part of his visit, Thursday, Feb. 2, 2:45 p.m. in the CRH. All Luther students, faculty and staff are invited to this special opportunity presented in part by the Women and Gender Studies program "Spotlight On Sex and Gender" conversations. Farwell Distinguished Lecture Feb. 2

Nicholas Kristof, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the New York Times, will deliver the Luther 2012 Farwell Distinguished Lecture Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. A book signing and reception will follow the lecture. All events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Kristof's lecture, titled "Half the Sky: A Call to Action," centers around women's rights and how helping women in developing nations can change the world.

SAC Concerts: Eric Hutchinson

SAC Concerts is hosting singer/songwriter Eric Hutchinson with special guest Dustin Hatzenbuhler at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 in the Center for Faith and Life. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $15 in the Luther Box Office or online at boxoffice.luther.edu. Hutchinson's music is a blend of pop, rock and folk sounds. Hatzenbuhler will entertain with vocals, ukelele, guitar and piano.

Music in the Shape of a Pear festival

A Luther concert series is expanding its format for 2012. Luther's semi-annual Music in the Shape of a Pear, directed by Brooke Joyce, Luther composer-in-residence, will become a weekend-long festival of new music from Feb. 3-5, with events at on and off-campus locations.

Charles Dickens' 200 birthday celebration

The campus community is invited to celebrate Charles Dickens' 200th birthday with the Preus Library staff Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. The event features a short parody of "A Christmas Carol," written and directed by Harland Nelson and starring a cast of Luther students. 

CSS: Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul

Grammy award winning artist Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul will perform at Luther College Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets for the performance are on sale at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357. Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. Ivers' music blends many genres including Celtic, African, Latin, rock funk and jazz.

Midwest Black History Conference Feb. 15-16

Luther's ninth annual Midwest Black History Conference will be held Feb. 15-16. The conference, titled "Modern Blackness and the New Jim Crow(s)," commemorates the legacy of Malcom X. Registration is open to the public, cost is $25. The conference includes presentations, panel discussions, a plenary lecture and book signing by keynote speaker Michelle Alexander, and a gallery exhibit and reception. To Jim Iverson, Facilities Services, on the Jan. 21 death of his brother Gary Iverson, 66, of Fairbank, Iowa.

To the family of Sandra Rockwell, 57, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, at her home in Decorah after a long battle with cancer. Sandra was an administrative assistant in the music department. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday,
Feb. 1, at the Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah. The funeral will be held at
10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, IA.  Sandra is survived by husband, Kevin '79, and two sons, Trevor '07 of Decorah and Erik '10 of Garnavillo, IA.

Position opening

Residence Life Area Coordinator: The area coordinator is part of a five-person hall director/area coordinator team, in a 2,200-bed system.  Master’s degree in related area and hall experience preferred, bachelor’s degree required.
