Board of Regents workshop/materials

The Regents will hold their biennial workshop at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Feb. 10-12. Pre-meeting materials can be viewed at http://katie.luther.edu. Look for the Board of Regents site under the "my courses" section on the left-hand side of the page. A sub-folder contains February 2012 documents.

Candidate open forum

An open forum with Tanya Winegard, finalist for the position of Vice President and Dean for Student Life, will be held Monday, Feb. 13, from 11 a.m.-noon in Mott/Borlaug. Her file may be accessed on Katie in the VP-STUDENT-LIFE-2011 course under the President's Office 'candidate searches' folder.

Search for director of Human Resources

After 15 years as director of Human Resources, Roy Prigge will retire May 31. We look forward to thanking him for his steadfast service later this spring. A search for a new director of HR will begin immediately with the following persons serving on the search committee: Mona Nelson, chair; Carolyn Schwendeman, Jon Christy, Marsha Wenthold, Bob Shedinger and Diane Tacke. Business card deadline Feb. 8

The Publications office is accepting orders for business cards online at www2.luther.edu/printwork. Order in quantity increments of 250. Send a sample of an old card via campus mail to AJ Perling. Submit orders prior to Wednesday, Feb. 8. The publications office gathers business card orders at the start of each semester; please note that orders printed individually at other times cost considerably more to run.

Mandatory student employment supervisor meetings

All faculty and staff members who directly supervise student employees at any time during the year are required to attend one of four mandatory student employment supervisor meetings on Wednesday, Feb. 8. These meetings will be held in the CRH at 9 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., with each lasting approximately one hour. Items that will be covered include hiring process changes for 2012-13, payroll procedures, corrective action protocol and a discussion on the importance of work-study as a retention tool. Please plan on joining us for one of these sessions. Attendance will be taken.

Fundraising continues for 'Luther Neighbors' project with HFH

The Winter 2012 issue of the "Luther Alumni Magazine" incorrectly reported that construction had begun on the "Luther Neighbors" Habitat for Humanity house. The "Luther Neighbors" house will undergo construction in Fall 2012 on the lot adjacent to the Habitat for Humanity house pictured in the magazine. Fundraising for the "Luther Neighbors" house—a project of the college's sesquicentennial—continues. Parent Portal

The Office for Financial Services, Registrar's office, Financial Aid and LIS are excited to have the Parent Portal available for parents to assist their son or daughter with their financial responsibilities as well as to view grades and class schedule. A student can grant permission to a parent to view the student’s financial and/or academic information via http://my.luther.edu. Wanted: Teams for Wii Bowling

Sign up now for Wii Bowling League to be held Feb. 13-March 9 in the Book Shop. Teams of four will bowl once a week. All students, faculty and staff may join. Victim counselor training sessions

Luther College will host the Helping Services for Northeast Iowa 24-hour victim counselor training sessions Feb. 21, 23, 28 and March 1, 6 and 8. Sessions will be held from 6-10 p.m. in Loyalty Hall. Anyone interested in volunteering with Helping Services' 24-hour crisis line should attend. A light meal/refreshments will be provided at no cost. Employee health fair March 20

An employee health fair will be held Tuesday, March 20 from 7:30 a.m.-noon in the Union's Williams Lounge. All March blood screenings will be moved to March 20 during the fair, the blood draw times have been extended from 7:30-11 a.m. Employees who have already signed up for a March date will be contacted to reschedule for March 20 if possible or an earlier date.

Visitors in first-year classes for Shadow Days

Admissions' first Shadow Day of the semester is Monday, Feb. 20. Many first-year students will host guests as they go through their day's normal activities.The Admissions office has asked all first-year students to tell you if he/she is acting as a host. Those who teach first-year students will most likely have visitors in class. We know that in some sections space may get tight, but please be as welcoming and as accommodating as possible. Most visitors will leave after the 2:45 p.m. class period. A second Shadow Day is scheduled for Monday, March 5. Thank you, Admissions

Trial change in chapel schedule for 2012 spring semester

In an ongoing effort to be attentive to changes in the patterns of the community, this spring semester the campus will gather for weekday chapel on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Other than for special occasions such as convocation on Feb. 2 and the Black History Month Conference on Feb. 16, there will not be chapel on Thursdays. At this point, this change is not permanent but a trial for the 2012 spring semester. The campus pastors will be available for conversation on Thursdays during the chapel time both in the Union and the CFA Atrium.

Dickens birthday celebration in Preus Library

The campus community is invited to come to the main floor of Preus Library Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the 200th birthday of author Charles Dickens. Enjoy a humorous presentation of "The Essence of a Christmas Carol in 13 Minutes" by Harland Nelson and performed by a cast of Luther student actors. Birthday cake is to be served afterwards at the Research Help Desk.

'Why Most Student Organizations Don't Work'

SAC Diversity is bringing Joe Urbanski, motivational speaker, to campus Wednesday, Feb. 8. Urbanski will explain to the group "Why Most Student Organizations Don't Work" at 7 p.m. in Olin 102. The lecture is open to the Luther community with no charge for admission.

Biology Colloquium Feb. 9
All members of the Luther community are invited to a biology colloquium Thursday, Feb. 9 at 9:40 a.m. in Valders 206. Brook Shields, visiting assistant professor of biology at Luther, will present "Ubiquitin: Terminator of Proteins."  

CSS: Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul

Grammy award winning artist Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul will perform at Luther College Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets for the performance are on sale at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357. Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. Ivers' music blends many genres including Celtic, African, Latin, rock funk and jazz.

Faculty Artist Series: Miko Kominami

Miko Kominami will perform a piano recital Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Kominami's program features two works by Franz Liszt: "After Reading Dante" and "Petrarch Sonnet 104." The program also includes Beethoven's popular "Waldstein" Sonata, "Andante Spianato" by Frédéric Chopin and "Four Pieces" by Sergei Prokofiev.

Sympathy

To the family and friends of Orville Running, artist and Luther professor emeritus of art, who died Feb. 6 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Running, 101, began teaching art and Bible at Luther in 1946. Along with teaching and leading the Luther Art Department, he managed the college's annual Fine Arts Festivals from 1957-1966. He also taught courses in the religion department, delivered chapel talks, and preached in area churches. He was married to Marjorie Olney in 1934. They were the parents of four children: Marit (Pudas), George, Marjorie (Wharton), and Kristi (Carlson). Running married Mildred Lund in 1990; she died in 1999. Services are pending.

To the family and friends of Virgil Thuente, 89, who died Feb. 2 in Ossian. Virgil was the father of Vern Thuente and father-in-law of Donna Thuente, both of whom work in Facilities Services, and the father of former staff member Merle Thuente.

To Marty Jacobs, Facilities Services, on the Feb. 4 death of his father Marvin Jacobs, 71, of Springbrook, Iowa.

Welcome new employee

President Torgerson has named Ellen Modersohn the college's new director of publications and design. Modersohn will assume her duties with Luther on Feb. 27. She succeeds Greg Vanney who directed the Luther publications and design staff for almost 20 years before accepting a position with the University of Iowa Foundation in 2011. Modersohn will direct the college's publications operations. She will oversee the publications and design department and serve on the college's seven-member marketing and communications team.
