February staff meeting change

Instead of the Feb. 15-16 staff meetings previously scheduled, all staff are invited to one session Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 11 a.m. to noon in Valders 206. President Torgerson and Paula Meyer, chair of the Board of Regents, will brief the staff on actions taken by the Board of Regents at their Feb. 10-12 workshop. Diane Tacke will share peer comparison data related to compensation. Because many offices need to remain open during this hour, departments are encouraged to designate a representative who can report back to colleagues unable to attend.

Candidate open forum

An open forum with David Vasquez, finalist for the position of Vice President and Dean for Student Life, will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 11 a.m.-noon in Mott/Borlaug.  His file may be accessed on Katie in the VP-STUDENT-LIFE-2011 course under the President's Office "candidate searches" folder.

Employee health fair March 20

An employee health fair will be held Tuesday, March 20 from 7:30 a.m.-noon in the Union's Williams Lounge. All March blood screenings will be moved to March 20 during the fair, the blood draw times have been extended from 7:30-11 a.m. Employees who have already signed up for a March date will be contacted to reschedule for March 20 if possible or an earlier date.

Visitors in first-year classes for Shadow Days

Admissions' first Shadow Day of the semester is Monday, Feb. 20. Many first-year students will host guests as they go through their day's normal activities.The Admissions office has asked all first-year students to tell you if he/she is acting as a host. Those who teach first-year students will most likely have visitors in class. We know that in some sections space may get tight, but please be as welcoming and as accommodating as possible. Most visitors will leave after the 2:45 p.m. class period. A second Shadow Day is scheduled for Monday, March 5. Thank you, Admissions

Health Risk Appraisals
Health Risk Appraisals have been mailed to all employees. Look for a blue envelope from the Office of Human Resources. The envelope will contain details about how to log onto the Other Health Plan website to do the Health Risk Appraisal. The Health Risk Appraisal is one of the three steps required in 2012 to avoid the additional increase in monthly health care premiums.

Facilities Services: driver announcement

Drivers of Luther vehicles are required to annually complete a driver's application.  Applications are available on the Facilities Services' web page or the Facilities Services office. Drivers are required to provide a copy of their driver's license. First-time applicants must provide a copy of their health insurance card and take a quiz at the Facilities Services office. Large vans have special requirements which can be found online in the "Vehicle Use Handbook."

Locally made treats for Valentine's Day

Forget the flowers...try something sweeter. Dining Services is selling special locally made treats this Valentine's Day. Swing by the C-Store for locally made chocolate roses and hearts, just $1 each. Then in Marty's on Valentine's Day from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. you can get a personalized heart-shaped red velvet cake from the Norse Bakery, just $6.95.

Discounted meals at the cafeteria

Luther faculty and staff receive discounted door prices at the Caf while they are working. The Caf is all-you-care-to-eat and features homemade recipes, local items-including 100 percent local Grass Run Farms hamburgers, every day and fresh ingredients. Join us for breakfast for $3.50, lunch for $5 and dinner for $6.75 any day of the week.

Brown bag talks Feb. 14, 21

Andy Hageman, English and environmental studies, will give a brown bag talk on "Post-'Nature' Projections: Ecological Media Teaching and Research," Tuesday, Feb. 14. Michael O'Brien, ethnomusicology, will present "This Is What Democracy Sounds Like: Soundscapes of the 2011 Wisconsin Pro-Labor Protest Movement" Tuesday, Feb. 21. 'The Vagina Monologues' Feb. 17-19

To raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls Luther College V-Day 2012 will present a benefit production of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" Feb. 17-19. Performances are Friday and Saturday Feb. 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall.

Tickets to the performances are $5 in advance and $7 at the door, available at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357, open 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekdays with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m.

SAC Diversity: Six Appeal

Six Appeal, a six-person contemporary a cappella group, will perform Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at Marty's CyberCafé. Tickets are available at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357, or at the door the night of the show. The performance is sponsored by the Student Activities Council Diversity Committee.

Faculty Artist Series: Miko Kominami

Miko Kominami will perform a piano recital Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Kominami's program features two works by Franz Liszt: "After Reading Dante" and "Petrarch Sonnet 104." The program also includes Beethoven's popular "Waldstein" Sonata, "Andante Spianato" by Frédéric Chopin and "Four Pieces" by Sergei Prokofiev.

'Spotlight on Sex and Gender'

The women and gender studies program extends an invitation to gather for a conversation on "Sex and Gender" immediately following the 2 p.m. performance of the Luther College production of "The Vagina Monologues," Sunday, Feb. 19 in the CRH.  Moderated by Thomas C. Johnson, post-doc in communication studies, faculty and students will consider key questions in hopes to inspire social awareness and deepen understanding of sex and gender. This conversation will kick-off the "Spotlight On Sex and Gender: A Campus Conversation Series" initiative sponsored by the WGST program.  

Faculty Artist Series: Hannah Leffler

Hannah Leffler, adjunct faculty in music, will perform a flute recital Sunday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Leffler will perform works by Ian Clarke, Paul Hindemith, Lowell Liebermann, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Pierre Sancan.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

A chapter by Mark D. Johns, "Voting 'Present': Religious Organizational Groups on
Facebook" is included in the book, "Digital Religion, Social Media and Culture," recently published by Peter Lang.

Tom Bourcier and Lynne Rothrock '85 will perform a cabaret titled "Half Price Chocolates in a Heart Shaped Box" at ArtHaus, Feb. 17-19. Rothrock has performed from Nashville to the Manhattan Vocal Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center, while Bourcier has performed around the world with acts such as the Dirty Dozen Band and Dizzy Gillespie. They met at Western Michigan University; this marks their first collaboration. For details, visit www.arthausdecorah.org.

Nancy Gates Madsen's article "Bearing False Witness? The Politics of Identity in Elsa Osorio's 'My Name Is Light'" was published in "Pushing the Boundaries of Latin American Testimony: Meta-morphoses and Migrations" (Palgrave Macmillan Press, January 2012), edited by Louise Detwiler and Janis Breckenridge. 

Three Luther faculty presented at the ACM Conference "The Past, Present, and Future of the Book" held at Cornell College on Feb. 3-4. Andi Beckendorf featured student projects from Art 104 "Foundations: Visual Thinking" in the presentation "Rare Book Roundtable: Drawing Inspiration from the Curriculum" that was part of a session co-led by Leslie Hankins of Cornell. Andy Hageman presented the paper "Google Books and the Prospects of Distant Reading" which explored emerging methods of reading and how they enable us to rethink research in the humanities. Kate Martinson offered the hands-on workshop "Against the Grain" and presented "The Green Book - Teaching Sustainability through Knowledge of the Book," based on work from her Green Book course at Luther.

Carol Gilbertson, professor emerita of English, gave a reading of her poems from her recent chapbook, "From a Distance, Dancing" (Finishing Line Press, 2011), at the Library After Hours program at Grandview University in Des Moines, Friday, Feb. 3.  Her visit included teaching three creative writing classes.

Luther will implement new sustainability initiatives thanks to a grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation. The MAC Foundation awarded $383,612 to support efforts in environmental education and sustainability. The MAC Foundation grant is supporting sustainability internships, environmental education outreach programs and the staff coordinator who oversees these efforts. The college also received a five-year grant of $50,000 from the foundation in 2009.

Congratulations: tenure and promotion

Congratulations to the following faculty members who were granted tenure by the Board of Regents on Feb. 11: Alfredo Alonso Estenoz, modern languages and literatures; Heather Armstrong, music; Erin Flater, physics; Nancy Gates Madsen, modern languages and literatures; Doug Knick, education; Britt Rhodes, social work; Paul Savariappan, mathematics; and Stephanie Travers, psychology. These individuals were also promoted to associate professor.
