Presidential Search Committee nominations
In her presentation to faculty and staff last week, Board of Regents Chair Paula Meyer invited nominations for the presidential search committee. Three faculty, one from each division, two staff, one exempt and one non-exempt, and one student will be appointed to the year-long committee. Nominations are due Friday, March 2. Faculty can send up to three nominations, one of whom should be from one's own division. Staff can send up to three nominations as well, and names can include exempt and/or non-exempt staff members. Associate Dean announced
Thank you to all who responded to the call for nominations for the three-year appointment to serve as Associate Dean and Director of Faculty Development following Lori Stanley's exemplary term of service. I am pleased to announce that Jeffrey Wilkerson has accepted the invitation to serve in this role.
Jeff has been a member of the Luther Physics faculty since 1997. An admired teacher, advisor and mentor, his service has included leadership as department head and as chair of the Faculty Organization Committee. Jeff was awarded the Janet Andersen Lecture Award by the Midstates Consortium for Math and Science in 2008 in recognition of his engaged teaching and involvement with undergraduate researchers.
Jeff will begin his new duties Aug. 1. Please join me in congratulating Jeff and welcoming him to the Dean's Office.

Fast and Feast
Fast and feast in community this Lent. Fast on Wednesdays during Lent from Ash Wednesday on Feb. 22 through Wednesday of Holy Week, April 4. As a way of sharing in a core spiritual practice of Lent, you are invited to choose a fast for Wednesdays in Lent. Fast from a meal, a particular treat (coffee, chocolate), or do an electronic fast (stay off Facebook, avoid texting, turn off your cell). Mark the day of fasting in community Wednesdays at Eucharist in the CFL with a simple communion service at 9:30 p.m. followed by a time of fellowship. Soup and bread will be served to break the fast.
International Studies declaration
Know a student interested in declaring a major or minor in International Studies? If so, the first step in that process is to attend an information session and fill in a plan of study form. There are two opportunities to do this in the coming weeks: Thursday, Feb. 23 and Thursday, March 8. Both sessions will be held from 9:40-10:30 a.m. in Koren 217. 2011 FSA must be used by March 15
Flexible Spending Account dollars deducted from employee paychecks during 2011 may be used for eligible expenses through March 15, 2012. Claims for these dollars must be submitted to Midwest Group Benefits by March 31, 2012.
LIS KATIE announcement

LIS faculty development brown bag
On Monday, March 5, 12:15-1:15 p.m. Barb Bohach and Deb Fordice will present the second in a series of brown bags highlighting the work of faculty who attended the "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology" summer workshop. This session will share a process that "virtually" brings children and adolescents into college education courses through guided video observations using iPod Touches, iPads and flipcams.

Human dissection seminars
Ever wanted to see what the inside of a human body looks like? The students who took Human Dissection and Anatomy during J-term would like to share their dissections. This opportunity will be offered to Luther students, faculty and staff from Feb. 27-March 15. Sessions will be in SHL 153 and last about 45 minutes. Faculty Artist Series: Beth Ray Westlund
Mezzo soprano Beth Ray Westlund will perform a voice recital Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.
The program features two Handel arias, five songs of Austrian composer Joseph Marx, and two songs of English-born Rebecca Clarke. The second half of the program contains song settings of Emily Dickinson texts by six different American composers. Ray will also perform waltz songs by Poulenc and Satie.
Jessica Paul is the collaborative pianist for the performance. Alumni lecturer Rachel Ware, soprano, will also perform.
SAC Spotlight: Tiff Jimber March 1
In celebration of Women's History Month singer-songwriter Tiff Jimber will perform Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Marty's CyberCafé.
Tickets are $10, available at the door the night of the show.
Jimber's performance features songs by music legends Madonna and Ella Fitzgerald and pop superstars Adele and Katy Perry, as well as Jimber's original songs.
Theatre/dance presents 'Invited to Tea'
The Luther theatre/dance department will present the spring production of "Invited to Tea" March 2-10 in Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts. "Invited to Tea" explores enduring personal and social patterns from different angles. Audience members are invited to bring smartphones to frame and reflect upon what they see, influencing the performance itself.
Production dates are March 2 at 9:30 p.m., March 3 and March 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will be held March 3 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 or free with Luther ID and are available at the Luther Box Office.
Public discussion with collaborators from theatre/dance, art and music, and Panela Leung of 5-D Immersive Design, on Friday, March 2 in the CFA, 1-2 p.m.

Art Song Jamboree March 5
The second Song Jam of the 2011-12 Luther Art Song Jamboree series will be Monday, March 5, 5:15 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the CFL.
Art Song Jamboree is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Jessica Paul, professor of music, has been the creator and lead advocate of the Art Song series, part of her ongoing research and mission to find art songs written by composers of all eras, musical styles, languages and nationalities.
Paideia Texts and Issues lecture March 6
Nancy Gates Madsen will present the spring Paideia Text and Issues lecture Tuesday, March 6, 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge.

Guest lecture: Becky Stiger '08
Becky Stiger '08 will present the lecture "Human Trafficking: Finding Hope at the Intersections of Tragedy, Justice, and Mercy" Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. Stiger is a program coordinator for Chicago Commons, a community based social service agency, and a program development coordinator for Traffick Free, a volunteer-based organization whose mission is to provide public awareness and advocacy as well as direct services for victims.
Don Kemp memorial event
In recognition of Social Work Month, the Social Work department invites you to help us celebrate the life of Don Kemp, award two scholarships and induct new members of the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society. Jeanie Lovell's article on understanding the difference between grants and proposals appeared in the February 15 issue of the Association of Lutheran Development Executives "Wisdom Wednesdays" blog for development professionals. Andi Beckendorf was invited to present at the Music Library Association Annual Meeting, held in Dallas Feb. 15-18. Her presentation "Starting Out on the Right Note: Active Learning Engagement for an Introduction to Music Research" outlined the teaching model and information literacy principles used in working with Luther's sophomore music students. The session was part of "Incorporating Active Learning Techniques in Library Instruction," which was co-sponsored by the association's Education and Instruction Committees.
After being invited to speak for several days to Midshipmen and Naval officers at the Naval Academy last fall on the topics of truth, empirical knowledge, and knowledge of values, Greg Jesson from the philosophy department was invited to speak at the Pentagon on ethics and leadership. His main lecture on Feb. 15 was titled "The Barbarians are Inside the Gate: Relativism Undermining Character and Leadership." 25,000 people work at the Pentagon.
Gregory Peterson gave a master class, "Creative Hymn Playing" for the Chippewa Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the First Congregational Church in Eau Claire, Wis. The next day the Chapter sponsored him in an organ recital featuring works of Bach and Vierne as well as music to celebrate Black History Month and President's Day.
Stephanie Diebel and Vanessa Anderson were selected to perform in the 2012 College Band Directors National Assocation Intercollegiate Band Feb. 23-25. They are both French horn players and will perform with other collegiate students in the honor band. The band will be conducted by Russel Mikkelson, director of bands at The Ohio State University. The intercollegiate band will rehearse Feb. 23-25 and perform Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at 4:15 p.m. The performance is part of the CBDNA Conference, held at Central Michigan University.
Eight Luther College December graduates of the nursing department received pins as a part of a Dec. 3 ceremony marking their completion of the nursing major. Margaret Buchta, Erin Fencl, Christina Hammer, Amy Hooper, Breanna Ketelsen, Kirstin Manges, Rachel Schutter and Jamie Stippich received pins during the ceremony.

Hip Hop classes
Birte Heinecke from Hanover, Germany will be teaching studio Hip-Hop classes as part of her internship study with Jane Hawley. Birte is currently working on the master's degree in performance studies at the University of Hamburg. Birte will be researching how the movement fundamentals curriculum can develop more creative approachs and abilities within hip-hop training. Hip-Hop classes for adults ages 16 and up will be Sundays, 7-8:30 p.m. in Studio II, Center for the Arts Feb. 26-March 18. Hip-Hop classes for children ages 6-15 will be held Mondays, 4-5:30 p.m. in Studio II, Center for the Arts Feb. 27-March 19. These classes are free and open to the public.
Summer school changes announced
The Dean’s Office is excited to announce changes for summer school 2012. Taking a summer course has become more affordable as the tuition fee has been reduced to $400 per credit hour (a 33 percent reduction from last year).
