Making Appointments with Norse Calendar
Are you looking for an easy way to set up meetings with advisees and other students during your office hours? Google’s “Appointment Slots” feature lets you designate blocks of available time which can be offered up to others through an online appointment calendar. Join us on Friday, March 30, 12:15-1:15 p.m. in Olin 301 to work with the “Appointment Slots” feature. We will focus on preparing advisors for registration meetings with advisees. All students, faculty and staff interested in this feature may attend as well.

Arts manager lecture/conversation March 27

John Anderson, president of Barrett Vantage Artists, a New York based artist management agency will present a lecture/conversation titled "Starting Your Performing Career: An Arts Manager's Perspective" at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 27 in Studio Two of Luther's Center for the Arts. Anderson's agency primarily handles a roster of clients focused on a professional career in music, including vocalists, instrumentalists, jazz and cabaret, and chamber music ensembles 

Two-person exhibit on display through April 25

A two-person art exhibit featuring paintings by Sue Hettmansperger and drawings by Crit Streed is on display through Wednesday, April 25 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the Luther campus.

'District Preus' to host 'Capitol Style'" Hunger Games party March 29

"District Preus" invites you to a Hunger Games "Capitol Style" party in the library on March 29 from 8-9 p.m. Test your Hunger Games knowledge in a trivia contest, amp up your look at the decoration station and forage for Hunger Games-related food. Come dressed "Capitol Style" and pose for READ posters. The winning District trivia team scores dinner and a movie for the entire team. "Peep"tacular Day March 30

The Book Shop will hold the 5th annual "Peep"tacular Day Friday, March 30. Toss a bean bag to receive discounts off your entire purchase. Enjoy punch and marshmallow treats. From 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. vote for your favorite Peep Diorama. Winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m. with prizes awarded. Peep Diorama entries will be accepted through Thursday, March 29. CSS: 'Damn Yankees"

The musical comedy "Damn Yankees" will come to the CFL Main Hall Friday, March 30, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $26, $24 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, available at the Box Office, 387-1357. In "Damn Yankees" Joe trades his soul to the Devil for a chance to lead his favorite baseball team in the pennant race only to realize the true worth of the life he's left behind.

FAS: Karen Kanakis

Karen Kanakis, soprano, will give a solo voice recital as part of the Faculty Artist Series Saturday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the NRH with Jessica Paul, collaborative pianist.

Beasley photography on display April 2-May 20

Photographs by Minneapolis artist Douglas Beasley will be on display April 2-May 20 in the CFL.

Beasley will speak in chapel Monday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. A gallery reception with the artist will be held that afternoon from 3-4:15 p.m. in the upper level of the Center for Faith and Life.

All events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Holly Moore will present the Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture "The Garden of Adonis: Ancient Analogue of the Modern Agricultural Revolution" Tuesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. in the CRH. Sponsored by the Paideia Endowment.  

Passover Celebration April 12

Interfaith Holiday Meal Celebration—Passover Celebration will be held Thursday, April 12, 6:30 p.m., Peace Dining Room. Join College Ministries and the Diversity Center for a model Seder, a Jewish tradition that celebrates the Passover theme of freedom from slavery and oppression. Space is limited. CSS: Regina Carter

Jazz violinist Regina Carter will perform Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are on sale at the Luther Box Office. Tickets are $23, $21 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. The performance features pieces from Carter's latest album "Reverse Thread." The album is a blend of traditional African folk melodies infused with contemporary elements of American jazz.

To Jan Berg and family on the death of Warren Berg, age 87, Luther College professor emeritus of economics, who died Monday, March 26, at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 30 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Congratulations

To Rachel and Rod Vsetecka on the birth of their son, Derek Taylor Vsetecka, born Wednesday, March 21 at 8:30 p.m., weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces. Derek joins big sister, Danica.

New employee

Kathryn Seidel joined Luther as a temporary administrative assistant in the music department in October 2011. Her status has since changed to support staff. Her office is Jensen-Noble 210, telephone 387-1280.

Programmer analyst: Luther seeks a self-motivated, detail-oriented programmer analyst to support campus information systems. Knowledge of procedural computer languages, SQL databases and reporting required. Bachelor's degree in a computer related field or equivalent of education and experience with SQL Server reporting is preferred. Must have excellent communication, technical and analytical skills. Coordinator of Student Organizations: Ten-month/year position, primary responsibilities of the position include developing a plan for organizational development for the student organizations, providing educational and programming leadership for campus organizations, training members and advisors to become proficient with various computer software programs and working with program assessment, data collection and trend analysis. Bachelor's degree, preferably from a liberal arts college, is required; masters in student personnel administration, leadership studies or higher education, preferred. Fourteen Luther College students have been selected to present their research projects at the 26th National Conference of Undergraduate Research, the showcase event for exemplary research and scholarship by undergraduate students from the nation's top colleges and universities. The 14 students include: Georgianna Whiteley, Erin Voelschow, Mark Irish, Abby Nance, Jaci Wilkinson, Laurie Medford, Jonathan Grieder, Margaret Darling, Ashley Matthys, Ben Gardner, Daniel Warden, Charles Driscoll, Andrew Knight and Joe Thor.

Marjorie Wharton was the keynote speaker at the recent Conference of the Great Plains Chapter of the College Music Society. In her lecture "Poulenc created a POETRY cycle?!" she demonstrated that composer Francis Poulenc understood the works of modern artists and the poetic equivalents of surrealist poet Paul Eluard. Poulenc created a poetry cycle from poems never published as a cycle. Edwin Andereck joined Wharton to perform four of the poems.

Kristin Swanson presented "Judges 19-21: Anti-Ezra Polemic?" at the Central States Regional meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature/American Schools of Oriental Research, St. Louis, March 18-19.

Lecture and Fine Arts committee seeks applications

Help wanted to pick garlic mustard

Mary Lewis would like your help picking garlic mustard. Come help at Palisades Park Saturday, March 31 from 9 am.-noon. Go past the entrance to end of gravel road. Plan to arrive no later than 10 a.m., as the group may be moving. Bring gloves and garden hoes if you have them.

The Tissue Issue
"Ultra" brands of toilet paper may feel soft on your bum, but they're hard on the environment because they're made from virgin fiber and bleached with chlorine. Virgin fiber typically comes from trees grown for pulp production or from sawmill leftovers after trees are cut into lumber. The alternative: brands made from 100 percent recycled fiber, preferably with at least 80 percent postconsumer content. You can download a wallet-size buyer’s guide from Greenpeace (www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/forests/tissueguide) or the Natural Resources Defense Council (www.nrdc.org/land/forests/gtissue.asp).
