Message from the president

I am pleased to announce the Greg Jesson, assistant professor of philosophy has been appointed to a three year term as director of the Center for Ethics and Public Life, succeeding John Moeller, professor
of political science who completes his term at the end of May. Jesson has been teaching at Luther for the past three years. In addition to directing the work of the Center Jesson will teach three philosophy courses each year. Jesson's hope for the Center is that "it will touch the lives of Luther students directly and powerfully by helping form ethically sensitive persons who will carry out the highest ideals of Luther College by making the world a better place in their own spheres of influence". We welcome Jesson to this important role and extend our thanks to Professor John Moeller
for his foundational work in launching the Center for Ethics and Public Life.

Miller Challenge update

Luther is now more than 75 percent toward the $1 million Miller Challenge goal for the new aquatic center. The Millers’ gift will match one dollar for every two dollars contributed. LIS faculty development brown bags

On Tuesday, April 3, 11:30-12:30 p.m. Nick Gomersall, Ginger Meyette and Jayme Nelson will present the fourth and final in a series of brown bags highlighting the work of faculty who attended the "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology" summer workshop. Nick will report on an initiative that asked students, rather than working from published textbooks, to write their own ‘textbooks’ using personal wikis. Ginger will talk about the impact of the workshop on her SW 305 Research Methods for Social Work course. Jayme will talk about her work integrating SecondLife virtual reality software into her senior level nursing class.

GLBT Resources for Parents

Research suggests that how parents respond to their children when they come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender has a major impact on their well-being. Lead With Love is a 35-minute documentary that speaks directly and sympathetically to parents who may be struggling with their children's sexual orientation. Other GLBT resources for parents are available on the Counseling Service website.

Reimbursement for joining CSA

Eager to eat fresh, local summer produce? If so, consider purchasing a CSA. CSA or Community Supported Agriculture is a great way for consumers to purchase local, seasonal food right from the farmer. Consumers pay an up-front cost, and in exchange receive weekly or biweekly boxes of produce for the entire summer. Wellness and Sustainability are collaborating to offer Luther faculty and staff a 50 percent reimbursement on their CSA share. To receive the reimbursement you will simply need to attend two summer book discussions and two local foods cooking classes. PEEPtacular day

Thanks to all who created entries and who came to vote in the fifth annual Peep Diorama Contest. New Mail Center hours

The Mail Center window will be open until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays on a trial basis for the rest of the semester. The center will hand out packages for students. No cash sales. (Just like Saturday mornings.)

If you have a pre-paid package, or have a department account number to use, you may drop off outgoing mail. Have departmental account numbers clearly labeled on the packages.

Mail Center announcement

Signatures are now required for faculty and staff packages delivered to on-campus buildings. This helps us track down any misplaced packages. Contact Kim Bohr, 387-1013, with concerns.

Mail Center/Document Center name change

The Mail Center and the Document Center are both run by IKON Office Solutions. Three years ago IKON was purchased by Ricoh Corporation. Starting April 1 the IKON name will be changing to Ricoh.There will be no changes in our service levels, only the name change. You may have noticed that our service department starting using the name more than a year ago.

Document Center

The Document Center is pleased to announce a discount for large run jobs. Any on campus work done at the Document Center that has 1,000 copies or more will no longer have extra charges for collating, stapling or folding. The jobs need to be set up for the copy machines to do these functions automatically. Contact the Document Center on how to set your jobs up this way and get this additional discount. Staff Excellence Award nominations

Staff and faculty are invited to nominate a Luther staff member for this year's Staff Excellence Awards. The deadline for nominations, Friday, April 27, is earlier than normal so that the recipients can be announced at the Staff Celebration picnic on Tuesday, May 22. Facilities Services update

The chiller in the CFL has been replaced and additional work will be required to install the pumps inside the building. The process should take approximately two weeks. The new chiller will be more efficient than the original chiller and will utilize a more atmospheric friendly refrigerant.

LIS Demonstration: Google+

Curious about Google Plus, but want to know more before you dive in? Come to a demonstration Tuesday, April 10, 3-4 p.m., Hovde Lounge, by LIS social media team members Jennifer Rian and Sasha Griffin. Google Plus (G+) is a social network that was opened to all Norse Key accounts in February. We will demonstrate key features of G+, such as managing your contacts within Circles and video conferencing with multiple users in Hangouts. LIS 'Teaching and Technology': Social Pedagogies and Technology

LIS will hold a "Teaching and Technology" session Thursday, April 12, 3-4 p.m., Borlaug, Dahl Centennial Union, on Social Pedagogies and Technology facilitated by Andy Hageman and Brooke Joyce. This session will introduce case studies of how social media tools have been used in the classroom. The use of blogs and other social media tools will be discussed in the context of how these online collaborative tools can coexist with and extend instructional strategies. Update on summer 2012 faculty computer roll-out

LIS will hold a "Teaching and Technology" session Wednesday, April 18, 12:15-1:15 p.m., Mott, Dahl Centennial Union, on the summer 2012 faculty computer roll-out facilitated by Larry Sikkink. Faculty members in the following departments are scheduled to receive new computers this summer as part of the four year replacement cycle: art, classics, English, modern languages and literatures, philosophy, religion, theatre/dance. 'Believe to Achieve'

"Believe to Achieve Half-Marathon" race is rapidly approaching! Have you wondered if you could jog/walk 13.1 miles? This is the perfect race for you to try as it is designed for "newbies". You can not have run in a race longer than a 5K to participate. Date of race: April 15 at 1 p.m. out to the fish hatchery and back to Luther. Application process change for J-term off-campus study

Change in application process for J-term off-campus study courses: Beginning this April, students applying to participate in J-term 2013 off-campus study courses will complete the application online and request recommendations online. We've streamlined the process and hope that you will find it easy to use. Call Corby Preus, 387-1275, or Chelle Meyer, 387-1055, if you have any questions or problems completing the online recommendation form or would prefer to receive a paper copy of the recommendation form.

TIAA-CREF will be on campus for personal financial consultations in a confidential setting. Events this week

Climate Justice Campaign

Students will host a series of Climate Justice Campaign events on campus April 1-22 in conjunction with the international observance of Earth Day. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about climate change as a social justice issue and advocate for a sustainable and just future. Students will collect climate justice pledges, circulate petitions for specific climate actions, register voters for the 2012 elections, and collaborate with global concerns groups on the annual Peace Week.

· April 4, 7 p.m. - "Live Simply So Others May Simply Live," a film and dialogue on climate change, social justice, and sustainable living with interviewees in film, hosted by Kristi Holmberg

Two-person exhibit on display through April 25

A two-person art exhibit featuring paintings by Sue Hettmansperger and drawings by Crit Streed is on display through Wednesday, April 25 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the Luther campus.

A gallery reception will be held for Hettmansperger and Streed Wednesday, April 25, 3 p.m. in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery. Hettmansperger will also hold an artist talk titled "Entanglement: Nature and Culture in my Art," Wednesday, April 25 at 4 p.m.The reception is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Nordman exhibit on display March 29-May 17

Digital images by Omaha artist Russ Nordman will be on display March 29-May 17 in the Luther College Preus Library.

The exhibit features Nordman's "combines," manipulated digital photographs that result in kaleidoscopic, collage-like images.

In his work he transforms observations of the ordinary and the everyday into contemplative and imaginary commentary on the human experience.

Beasley photography on display April 2-May 20

Photographs by Minneapolis artist Douglas Beasley will be on display April 2-May 20 in the CFL.

Beasley will speak in chapel Monday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. A gallery reception with the artist will be held that afternoon from 3-4:15 p.m. in the upper level of the Center for Faith and Life.

All events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Paideia Texts and Issues: POSTPONED

Holly Moore's Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture "The Garden of Adonis: Ancient Analogue of the Modern Agricultural Revolution" scheduled for Tuesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. in the CRH has been postponed due to illness. Her lecture has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Olin 102. Note that the time and place have been changed as well.

Philosophy Colloquium on privacy

Andrew Askland, Arizona State University Law School, will present a Philosophy Colloquium on "Why There is Little Privacy, Whatever That is, in Your Future" Wednesday April 4 at 4 p.m. in Valders 362.

TIAA-CREF representative on campus

David A. Schmidt, managing consultant, Institutional Relationships for TIAA-CREF, will be on campus Thursday, April 5 to give the presentation:

To allow as many faculty and staff to go as possible, the presentation will be given twice: at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Mott Room in Dahl Centennial Union. Both sessions are open to all Luther employees.

Faculty Artist Series: Eric Ashcraft

Eric Ashcraft will perform a faculty voice recital Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.

The evening performance will feature pieces from various operas, including "Manon" by Jules Massenet, "Madama Butterfly" by Puccini and "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi.

Jessica Paul will accompany Ashcraft on piano. Also assisting on the recital are Kristin Hightower, Jonathan Struve, Andrew Wannigman, and Rachael Ware.

CSS: Regina Carter

Jazz violinist Regina Carter will perform Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are on sale at the Luther Box Office. Tickets are $23, $21 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. The performance features pieces from Carter's latest album "Reverse Thread." The album is a blend of traditional African folk melodies infused with contemporary elements of American jazz.

Spring Fling April 14

Luther Student Congregation will hold their Spring Fling community service day Saturday, April 14. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted. All donations will be split between the ELCA Malaria Campaign and the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center. Provide an explanation of the tasks to be completed in a 1.5-hour time frame.

Sihler workshop April 15

Luther alumna Amalia Vagts and musician Namoli Brennet will present the 2012 Luther Sihler workshop Sunday, April 15, 3 p.m. in Studio II in the CFA. Vagts and Brennet will lead an interactive afternoon performance exploring finding and using your voice in faith and activism. Attendees are invited to bring a musical instrument or other prop and prepare one selection of music, writing, movement or other original, personal reflection connected to faith, gender and activism.

Sympathy

To the family of Regent emeritus E.E. "Ray" Bentdahl '59, who died of
complications associated with pulmonary fibrosis on Monday, April 2 in
Scottsdale, Ariz. Ray and Shirley (Klingsheim) Bentdahl '59 — also a
former Regent — provided the gift that transformed Luther's central
campus into Bentdahl Commons. Shirley and Ray's two children are Ann

To the family of Warren G. Berg, age 87, professor emeritus of economics, who died March 26, in Decorah. To everyone who attended the Student Support Services celebration banquet on March 28. Nearly 160 guests enjoyed the evening which featured the presentation of several awards and scholarships, entertainment by Top Banana and a message from Nick Bonifazi '05.

Luther has sponsored the federally-funded SSS program for 40 years. The program serves over 160 students annually, with services ranging from tutoring and advising to leadership development and graduate school preparation.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Luther College Piano Quartet (music faculty members Miko Kominami, piano, Tarn Travers, violin, Spencer Martin, viola, and Eric Kutz, cello) along with guest violinist Conor O'Brien, are performing in Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa, on Sunday, April 15 at 2 p.m. They will perform piano quintets by Dvorak and Brahms. The concert is the spring event of the Czech Heritage Partnership of Spillville, and will take place in the church Antonin Dvorak attended in the summer of 1893. Adult tickets are $15, students free with ID.

Michael O'Brien presented a paper titled "Participatory music in the contemporary Wisconsin labor movement" at the Midwest Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology's annual meeting in Milwaukee.

Norma Hervey presented a paper on 21st century immigration and migration issues at the seventh annual conference, Cross-Cultural Cooperation in the Global Community in Kischenev, Moldova March 17.

Spencer Martin performed two concerts on the Bonneville Chamber Music Festival at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah March 21, 23. In addition to these performances, he also participated in a live recording for KBYU's "Highway 89" classical music show, and recorded the Chausson "Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet" for an upcoming CD release.

Richard Tirk taught masterclasses and performed a joint recital with Suzanne Tirk at the University of Brasilia, Brazil. Music performed included works by Luther Composer-in-Residence Brooke Joyce and Mitchell Dietz '11.

George Lowe (ceramics) and David Kamm (collage) are exhibiting their work in a two-person show at the Lowe Arts Center in Marion, Iowa, through May 25. There will be a gallery reception from 6-7 p.m. Friday, April 13, followed by music by Joe and Vicki Price as part of the coffeehouse night at the center. All are welcome.

MISCELLANEOUS

Bra drive April 10-14

I-ImpactNow is holding a bra drive to support women in Mozambique, Africa who are exiting the sex-trafficking industry. The bras will be collected, sent to Mozambique, and women will be given an inventory of bras which they are then able to sell in order to make a profit. This model provides the women with great income, a safe working environment, a flexible schedule, and a sustainable way of life. This idea was created by an organization called "Free the Girls" (http://freethegirls.com/).

Please donate gently used (or new) bras by bringing them to the Mail Center in a plastic bag labeled "BRAught Back to Life." Collecting bras April 10-14.

Financial donations will be applied to shipping costs. Send financial donations to SPO 270 in an envelope labeled "BRAught Back to Life." We will be collecting money until April 14.

Women, Faith, and Finance registration information
