ANNOUNCEMENTS
Spring Board of Regents meeting
The Regents will hold their final meeting of the academic year on campus May 11-12. The Spring Report to the Regents can be viewed on Katie in the "Board Meeting Materials" course under the "Board of Regents" folder. The Board's business meeting, scheduled for Saturday, May 12, at 9:30 a.m. in Loyalty Hall, is open to members of the campus community.
College Resources Council: staff nominations
At last week's staff meeting, President Torgerson outlined plans for the new College Resources Council, which will replace College Council beginning with the 2012-13 fiscal year. Staff are invited to nominate up to two colleagues who have budget center responsibility to serve on the College Resources Council. Send nominations to Linda Skoda, <skodalda>, no later than May 11. A description of the Council can be found on Katie (http://katie.luther.edu/moodle/). Go to "Planning Documents" under the "Office of the President" folder.
Luther College Aquatic Center groundbreaking
A groundbreaking ceremony for the Luther College Aquatic Center will be held Friday, May 11 at 5:30 p.m. on the northeast side of the Regents Center. Rain location: Regents Center lobby. All are welcome to join in celebrating the start of this exciting project. Construction will begin in summer 2012.
Staff celebration May 22
The 2012 staff celebration will be held Tuesday, May 22 beginning with a staff luncheon in the cafeteria at noon. Following the lunch, there will be a presentation in the CFL Main Hall by Andy Masters of Masters Performance Improvement, LLC titled: "Time Management and Work/Life Balance," presentations by 2011 Staff Excellence Award winners, employee recognition and announcement of the 2012 Staff Excellence Award winners by President Torgerson. Invitations will follow.

Faculty recognition dinner
Luther's annual faculty recognition dinner is Thursday, May 10 with a 5:30 p.m. reception in Hammarskjold and 6 p.m. dinner in Peace with program to follow. The program will honor retirees David Judisch and James Rhodes. Twenty-five year honorees are Jennifer Cantine and Jacqueline Wilkie. Finals prep week reminder
Tuesday-Sunday, May 8-13 is considered finals prep week and is intended to provide additional time for students to prepare for tests, papers and finals. These six days are set aside for academic preparation for finals and Luther does not schedule public events during this time. Exceptions include only athletic events, social gatherings, Senior Recognition Day and Research Symposia, and Cool Aid. Contact Campus Programming with questions.
Fiscal year end approaching
The end of the fiscal year is fast approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 11-12 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices (no faxed copies), and supporting purchase orders/ purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 13 to be included in FY 11-12 budget. Items for deposit must be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 5. Thanks for helping Office for Financial Services close out the year in a timely manner.
Children's bargain book blowout
The Book Shop is celebrating Children's Book Week, May 7-13, with a bargain children's book sale beginning Monday, May 7. Selection includes hundreds of titles with prices starting at $1 and up. Hurry in, offer good while supplies last.
Health Care Council executive summary
March 16: Historical data on the costs of MRIs was reviewed. Immunization costs at Winneshiek County Public Health, Winneshiek Medical Center, Gundersen and Luther's health service were discussed. June 2011-Jan. 2012 health insurance expenses were reported.
Be a waste diverter
In order to reduce the quantity of materials ending up in the landfill during move-out week, Sustainability is running a volunteer program to help direct students on the proper way to dispose of items and materials they don't want. In teams of two or four, volunteers will be placed at residential halls near the trash/recycling area and inside the building. Go to luther.edu/sustainability and look under "What's Currently Happening" to sign up.
Bentdahl Commons
Facilities Services will remove sod from the inner area of Bentdahl Commons. The sod has not been growing properly due to the fact remnants of the old roadway that formed the circle drive to the Union are located in the affected area. Facilities Services will remove the asphalt, install black dirt and lay new sod.
Legends equipment usage survey
Legends is conducting an equipment usage survey April 30-May 13. We encourage patrons to fill out this survey, located at the front desk of Legends.
Summer reading for fall 2012 incoming class announced
The summer reading for the fall 2012 incoming class is Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The Dean's office and the Paideia Endowment have made a limited number of copies available free of charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who are not already receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. To allow as many as possible to read the book, we encourage people to share a copy with their friends and colleagues. If you would like to read this story and join the campus conversation this fall, please stop by the Book Shop and pick one up.
Retirement reception for Roy Prigge May 17
A retirement reception for Roy Prigge will be held Thursday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to noon to thank him for his service to Luther as Director of Human Resources. Please join us in Hammarskjold to bid Roy a fond farewell. Roy is retiring after 15 years of employment at Luther.
Book Shop closed for inventory
The Book Shop will be closed for inventory Tuesday-Friday, May 22-25. We will make every attempt to be open on Friday, May 25. We will resume our regular summer hours of 8:15 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 29. We are sorry for any inconvenience.
Library books due May 11
May 11 is the due date for books checked out from the main stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, May 6. Books may be renewed by emailing <library>. The new due date is Dec. 8, Reading Day at the end of the fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (two years) will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." You may "View your account" online at library.luther.edu to see what you have checked out.

Commencement speaker announced
Hans Brattskar, Norway's director general and special envoy for climate change, will give Luther College's 2012 Commencement address to the 565 Luther seniors receiving the bachelor of arts degree. Brattskar, a 1979 graduate of Luther, will be awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree during the ceremonies Sunday, May 20 at Carlson Stadium on the Luther campus.

Senior Recognition Convocation May 8
On Tuesday, May 8, the Luther community — students, faculty and staff — will gather for the annual Senior Recognition Convocation. The Class of 2012 Recognition Convocation begins at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. All offices should arrange for staff members who wish to attend to be able to do so. President Torgerson will give the address, "Giftedness with Purpose and Passion.”
This celebration is a time to honor all members of the Class of 2012, as well as recognize graduating seniors who have earned Latin honors, those who have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to honor societies in their major fields, those who have received departmental and post-graduate awards, and academic all-conference athletes. The printed program will include titles of senior projects.
Save the Date for Senior Sendoff
Faculty/Staff are encouraged to "Save the Date" for the 2012 Senior Sendoff. Sponsored by Student Senate and the Alumni Office, Senior Sendoff has become an annual celebration, bringing together soon-to-be graduates with faculty/staff for an evening of conversation and dancing. New employee
Kate Frentzel joined Luther as a writer in the Office of Publications on Monday, April 30. Her office is Dahl Centennial Union 263A, telephone 387-1483.
Andrew C. Last has been appointed the college's director of Collegiate Chorale and Norsemen, and as assistant professor of music. Last will begin his duties at Luther in August. Last currently serves on the voice faculty at Concordia University, Nebraska, teaching applied voice to undergraduate majors and non-majors. In addition to his work there, he held the role of graduate assistant and Hixon-Lied Fellow at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Luther senior Kelly Dotseth has been selected to participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals, a year-long, federally-funded fellowship for study and work in Germany. Dotseth was one of 75 participants selected out of more than 500 applicants for 2012-13. Dotseth will attend a two-month intensive German language course, study at a German university or professional school for four months, and complete a five-month internship with a German company in her career field.
Luther will receive the 2012 Second Nature Climate Leadership Award, recognizing Luther as one of the nation's leading colleges and universities with regard to reducing greenhouse gas emissions on campus and integrating this goal with the college's educational mission. The 10 award recipients in the Second Nature competition will be honored at the 2012 Climate Leadership Summit to be held June 21-22 at American University in Washington, D.C. President Richard Torgerson will accept the award on June 21.
Sally Mallam Hovden attended Professional Visit Days April 26-27 at Landmark College in Putney, Vt. Landmark College is dedicated to serving students with diagnosed learning disabilities, dyslexia, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. Richard Cole has the article "Martin Luther's use of rhetorical mask for Jews, Princes, Clerics and other enemies: The Problem of Meaning in a Post-Modern Age" in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Religious History.

Jim Martin-Schramm gave a presentation titled "Promoting Sustainability on Campus: The Luther College Experience" on Friday, April 20 at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. as part of their Earth Week programming. He served as one of two external reviewers of the religion program at Augustana College in Rock Island, April 26-27.
Amy Behrman '12, won the Stephen Wieting award for the best paper to integrate theory and research at the 2012 Iowa Sociology Association annual meeting, Saturday, April 28 in Iowa City. Also presenting at the conference were Adam Dane, Abby Sandry, Sam Anderson, Meghan Kaufenberg and Dustin Ziminski. Jennifer Green and Char Kunkel accompanied the students.
Philip Freeman's book "How to Win an Election" was reviewed by the political writer James Carville in the latest issue of Foreign Affairs.
