Staff celebration May 22
The 2012 staff celebration will be Tuesday, May 22 beginning with a staff luncheon in the cafeteria at noon. Following lunch, there will be a presentation in the CFL Main Hall by Andy Masters of Masters Performance Improvement, LLC titled "Time Management and Work/Life Balance," presentations by 2011 Staff Excellence Award winners, employee recognition and announcement of the 2012 Staff Excellence Award winners by President Torgerson. COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Grounds
The college lawns will be fertilized and sprayed for broadleaf weeds beginning Friday, May 25 in the afternoon through Monday, May 28 weather permitting. For more information, contact Gary Brickman, 387-1668.
Farwell bridge
The Farwell bridge will be closed to pedestrian traffic sometime this week for construction. The bridge will reopen by June 7.
Fiscal year end reminder
Now that the end for the fiscal year is just around the corner, all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 11-12 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices (no faxed copies), and supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 13 to be included in FY 11-12 budget. Items for deposit must be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 5. Thanks in advance for helping us close out the fiscal year in a timely manner.
Summer training opportunity
Announcing a summer training opportunity for faculty and staff to create their personal webpage. LIS and Publications are collaborating to hold training sessions on June 19 and Aug. 9 from 9 a.m.-noon in Olin 301-Round Table Room. Faculty and staff may register for either session online at: http://lis.luther.edu/node/6839 for the June 19 session or http://lis.luther.edu/node/6841 for the Aug. 9 session. There is a limit of 15 people per session. Faculty/staff on contract for the summer may attend either session as regular work hours, those not on summer contracts will receive a $25 stipend for completing the training session. Luther.edu/value site available
In the interest of transparency and sharing of basic information, Luther has made available the website https://www2.luther.edu/value/ to Luther parents, students, prospective students, friends and community members. The website contains information on why students choose Luther, survey findings, statistics, comparative data and other resources. The site was designed to help prospective students and parents make a more informed evaluation of Luther and other colleges in important areas.
Luther partners with travel management company
The Cabinet is pleased to announce that Luther has partnered with Travel and Transport, a full-service travel management company, to assist faculty and staff in making travel arrangements. After July 1 all college-related travel will be required to go through T&T. Employees with a prior history of travel have been notified that they will receive instructions for creating a user profile, and will be asked to attend a training seminar. Those who expect to travel in the near future and have not been notified can contact Chuck Riha, 387-1526 or Peggy Lensing, 387-1531 to be added to the list of potential users.
Steam shutdown May 22-26
As an annual reminder the steam shutdown is planned for the evening of May 22 through May 26. A limited number of buildings will have hot water and some HVAC systems will be cooler than usual.
Cafeteria closed May 21-June 5
The cafeteria will close after brunch on Sunday, May 20 and will reopen on Wednesday, June 6. Summer board plans for students begin Tuesday, May 29 and may be used in Oneota Market. Email <diningservices> with questions.
Book Shop closed for inventory
The Book Shop will be closed for inventory Tuesday-Friday, May 22-25. We will make every attempt to be open on Friday, May 25. We will resume our regular summer hours of 8:15 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 29. We are sorry for any inconvenience.
Graduation DVDs

Luther experiences growth in local dairy purchases
Working with two local dairies, Luther has achieved another milestone in sustainable food purchasing. This spring, Luther has begun to procure all of its yogurt and hard ice cream from two dairies that are located within 30 minutes of campus.
Country View Dairy near West Union, Iowa, and WW. Homestead Dairy in Waukon, Iowa, are the farms that supply Luther with the yogurt and hard ice cream.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Richard Tirk was a clinician and featured soloist for Dover-Eyota Middle and High School May 17-18. Tirk worked with both middle and high school jazz ensembles during the clinic on May 17. The concert, performed the next day, featured Tirk as the soloist on DeLange's famous tune "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans." He also performed two tunes with a jazz trio.
J. R. Christianson presented a paper on "The Spaces and Rituals of the Royal Hunt" at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark on May 1 as part of a conference sponsored by the PALATIUM project on the history of European royal courts. Birgitte Christianson also attended the conference.
Dallas Wulf was selected as a recipient of one of the 29th annual graduate study fellowships granted by the R. J. McElroy Trust. Wulf will pursue a doctoral degree in physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In making nominations, President, Richard L. Toregerson, praised the academic leadership accomplishments of Wulf. The fellowships carry a stipend of $10,000 per year. Wulf was selected from a field of six finalists from colleges and universities in northeast Iowa.
Evgenia Fotiou of Athens, Greece, has been appointed by Luther to serve as the Associated Colleges of the Midwest-Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow of Indigenous Religious Traditions for 2012-14. Fotiou will begin her duties at Luther in August. Fotiou has served as an associate lecturer and teaching assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the anthropology and the gender and women's studies departments.
"Gems Rediscovered," a recording by Spencer Martin and Miko Kominami, has been released by Delos Productions. The new CD features sonatas for viola and piano by four lesser known, late-romantic-era composers: Benjamin Dale, Robert Fuchs, Paul Juon and Ernest Walker. The CD is available in the Luther Book Shop for $16.99, or online at www.lutherbookshop.com.
Steven Holland has been selected to receive a Fulbright award to teach in the southeastern European nation of Montenegro for the 2012-13 academic year. Holland's teaching project will allow him to work with a Montenegrin university to help students and faculty better understand the relationships between economic growth and the legal and social institutions that affect it.

Sustainability tip
Better boating: Savvy skippers can help prevent the spread of the zebra mussel, an invasive species that wreaks havoc by clogging water pipes and out-competing native freshwater mussels. The fingernail-size creature can infest new lakes and rivers by hitching a ride with boaters who visit multiple lakes. The steps to keep zebra mussels and other invasive species in check are well known—and worth repeating:
- Remove all vegetation from your boat and trailer before leaving the boat ramp.
- Drain water from the motor, bilge and wells before leaving.
- Dump leftover bait on land, away from the water's edge.
- Back home, rinse your boat, motor and trailer; let them dry in the sun for several days before visiting a different body of water.
