Summer hours reminder

Reminder that we started summer hours on Monday, May 21. 
Monday-Thursday:  8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with 45 minute lunch breaks; total hours = 8.25
Friday:  8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a 30 minute lunch break, and no morning or afternoon break; total hours = 7

Please note, each office must be staffed by at least one employee until 5 p.m. Fridays and breaks will not be scheduled at the end of the work day.

Farwell bridge

The Farwell bridge is closed to pedestrian traffic. The bridge will reopen by June 7. 

Fiscal year end reminder

Now that the end for the fiscal year is just around the corner, all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 11-12 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices (no faxed copies), and supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 13 to be included in FY 11-12 budget. Items for deposit must be sent to Office for Financial Services by June 5. Thanks in advance for helping us close out the fiscal year in a timely manner.

Cafeteria closed through June 5

The cafeteria is closed and will reopen on Wednesday, June 6. Summer board plans for students begin Tuesday, May 29 and may be used in Oneota Market. Email <diningservices> with questions.

Summer reading books available

The summer reading for the Fall 2012 incoming class is Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The Office of the Academic Dean and the Paideia Endowment have made a limited number of copies available free of charge at the bookstore for faculty and staff who are not already receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. To allow as many as possible to read the book we encourage people to share a copy with their friends and colleagues. If you would like to read this story and join the campus conversation this fall, please feel free to stop by the bookstore and pick one up. Right now there are plenty of texts left.

On Friday, May 25, Luther College hosted the annual spring conference for ILA-ACRL, the academic library chapter of the Iowa Library Association. Over 90 librarians from across the state were in attendance for the day-long event, which included a keynote address by Michael Porter, president of Library Renewal and four concurrent presentation sessions. The theme for the conference was "Build on Our Strengths :: Design for Our Future."

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute announced it has selected Luther College as one of 47 small colleges and universities in the United States to receive grants totaling more than $50 million that will enable the schools to work together to create more engaging science classes, bring real-world research experiences to students and increase the diversity of students who study science. Each four-year grant is in the range of $800,000 to $1.5 million, funds that will have a big impact at these primarily undergraduate institutions. Luther College has been awarded a $1.5 million grant and is one of eight schools receiving a first-time HHMI award. Luther is one of five schools to receive a HHMI award in the Preparing Future K-12 Teachers program. Others were Lewis & Clark College - $1 million, St. Olaf College - $1 million, University of Puerto Rico - $900,000, and Whittier College - $800,000.

Mary Jorgensen '66, of Rising Sun Life Coaching is partnering with Amanda Rhine, Pilates instructor, to present "The Happy SAGE: a Power-up for the Total You" at the Discover Happy studio, 222 E. Water St., Decorah, Wednesdays in June, 5:15-7:30 p.m. Integrated health practices include stretching, SAGE lessons in spirituality, authenticity, gratitude and enjoyment; plus light supper by Justin Scardina '05 and materials for a personal artistic expression. $35 per class. Mallory Heinzeroth '12 was named the recipient of Luther's Jenson Medal at the college's May 20 commencement ceremonies. Luther's Jenson Medal, established through an endowment gift from Luther alumni Elizabeth A. Jenson '45 and Paul G. Jenson '47, is presented each year to an outstanding senior, selected by the graduating class, who best demonstrates the ideals of the college through service to students and the college community. The award includes a $500 stipend.

Amy Weldon's essay "Traveling to Mary" has been accepted for a forthcoming volume titled "The Best Travel Writing 2012" (Solas Press). Her new story "Burning Lou" is out now in Fiction Southeast (fictionsoutheast.com).

Scavenger hunt through Driftless Safari

Sustainability tip

Powering Down PCs: U.S. companies waste almost $4 billion annually on nighttime electricity for computers, according to New Boundary Technologies, a company that says its Green IT Solution software (for Windows computers) can slash computing energy costs by up to 60 percent. After employees go home, the software puts their PCs into hibernation by automatically adjusting power management settings—and overriding any changes the employees may have made during the day. Similar systems include the 1E Nightwatchman, Faronics Power Save and Verdiem Surveyor.
