Luther College clarifies spraying policy

Luther College hired a contractor, No Lawn Left Behind, to apply fertilizer and herbicides on campus May 25-27. The Sunday, May 27 application was located near the Decorah City Pool.

According to readings taken on May 25-27, the college was well within state, local and college policies regarding herbicide drift.

The college maintains a standard that there be a minimum of 30 feet between spraying equipment and non-target areas. On Sunday, May 27 the closest proximity to the pool fence was 50 1/2 feet.

In applying herbicides, the college will not spray when wind speed exceeds 10 miles per hour. The lawn specialists from No Lawn Left Behind employed a wind anemometer throughout the application period in order to measure wind speeds on site. Wind speeds recorded May 27 did not exceed eight miles per hour.

The highest temperature recorded on May 27 was 74 degrees; the manufacturer's guidelines for the spray used, Horsepower®, specifies it can be used in temperatures up to 90 degrees.

Farwell bridge

The Farwell bridge is closed to pedestrian traffic. The bridge will reopen by June 7. 

OFS closes out end of year

The college's fiscal year ended May 31. The Office for Financial Services reminds all faculty and staff that supplies, materials, etc., must have been received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 11-12 budget.

Additionally, all outstanding travel expense reports, credit card reports, original invoices (no faxed copies), supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to OFS by June 13 to be included in FY 11-12 budget. Items for deposit that were in Luther's possession by May 31 should be brought to OFS immediately. Thank you for helping OFS close the year in a timely manner.

walkLUTHER day change

walkLUTHER participants will meet Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30-10 a.m.

Cafeteria reopens June 6

The cafeteria is closed and will reopen on Wednesday, June 6. Summer board plans for students begin Tuesday, May 29 and may be used in Oneota Market. Email <diningservices> with questions.

Summer reading books available

The summer reading for the Fall 2012 incoming class is Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The Office of the Academic Dean and the Paideia Endowment have made a limited number of copies available free of charge at the bookstore for faculty and staff who are not already receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. To allow as many as possible to read the book we encourage people to share a copy with their friends and colleagues. If you would like to read this story and join the campus conversation this fall, please feel free to stop by the bookstore and pick one up. Right now there are plenty of texts left.

School Performance Series tickets on sale

Luther College School Performance Series will bring two matinee shows, "ImaginOcean" and "Zorro," to the CFL stage for the 2012-13 season, Oct. 30 and Jan. 24. Tickets for the productions are on sale now at the Luther Box Office. Due to new sponsorship, tickets are now $2 per child. Area schools have priority for school matinees. Faculty workshop

On June 5 and 6 Storm Bailey and Jayme Nelson will lead a faculty development workshop titled "Ethical Issues and the Nature of Moral Decision-Making: Why You Don't Need a Moral Philosopher to Teach Paideia 450." Sympathy

To Kent Simmonds and Lynne Sootheran and family on the May 28 death of their 16-year-old granddaughter, Melody Simmonds, of Decorah.

To Joan deAlbuquerque on the death of her father, Anthony J. deAlbuquerque, 84. Anthony passed away June 4 after a long battle with Alzheimers. He lived in Auburn Hills, Mich. The funeral is Saturday, June 9.

Position opening

International admissions assistant, Center for Global Learning: The Center for Global Learning is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills for a 12-month position, approximately 35-hours per week during the academic year, 15-hours per week during the summer. Duties include:  data entry; helping manage correspondence with prospective international students, international parents, counselors and others; assisting in the preparation of admissions files; and preparing immigration documents according to federal regulations. High school diploma with post high school education preferred; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; and experience with Microsoft Office software and the ability to learn software specific to the position. Luther College seeks to build a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Richard Tirk performed at the annual International Trumpet Guild conference May 23 in Columbus, Ga. Tirk presented Luther Composer-in-Residence Brooke Joyce's work "Flash!" on a recital of all new works for trumpet. 

President Torgerson announced that staff members Sherry Alcock and Joni Rollinger are the recipients of the Luther Staff Excellence Award for 2012. Alcock and Rollinger were recognized at the annual Staff Appreciation Day on May 22. The Staff Excellence Award recognizes exemplary performance by staff members who consistently excel in their positions and demonstrate integrity and a strong commitment to the mission and values of Luther. Alcock serves as executive director of alumni relations and development services in the college's Alumni and Development Offices. Rollinger serves as employer relations coordinator in the Career Center. As part of the award, each recipient will be granted an individualized educational opportunity, funded by the college. The college works with award winners to pursue an opportunity in an area of special interest.

Michael O'Brien presented a paper titled "Jazz argentino o tango cosmopolita? Estrategias discursivas y musicales en el campo de la música popular argentina" at the Latin American Studies Association International Congress in San Francisco last week.

Loren Toussaint and Justin Marschall '12, both of the Luther psychology department, along with a colleague, David R. Williams, of Harvard University published an article on religiousness, spirituality, and forgiveness and connections to depression in the journal "Depression, Research, and Treatment." The study shows that religiousness/spirituality is predictive of depressive status six months later. Forgiveness acts as a mechanism through which religiousness/spirituality appear to have their health-enhancing effects. Seeking temporary housing for families

We are looking for housing for participants of the Movement Fundamentals Coalescence, July 18-27. Some of our participants are bringing their kids/families to participate in Lutherlag and are looking for housing which is more family-friendly than the dorms. Dozens of Dresses Day June 13

Anyone who can sew, iron, cut or provide fabric is welcome to join Dozens of Dresses Day, Wednesday, June 13, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Baker Commons.

Patterns, directions, laughter and encouragement provided. Bring your sewing machine (or serger) and sewing tools and a sack lunch. Coffee and tea provided.

East Side Masonry Materials sale

Public sales of East Side Masonry Materials will be held at the Luther College storage site on Pole Line Road, Monday-Saturday, June 11-16, from 10 a.m.  to noon.

Hard fired exterior whole and half bricks, soft Decorah kilned whole and half bricks are available, along with a large quantity of native Platteville limestone that was part of the underground foundation of the school. A very limited number of irregular pieces of the Kasota Minnesota quarried limestone from the above ground foundation of the former Decorah East Side School, along with a few clay tiles, single and double wide, are available.

Free firewood: The power line on Luther's land along Pole Line road was recently cleared by the power company. There are logs sitting in the right-of-way cut to firewood size.
