Faculty to discuss online instruction at Luther

The Dean's Office is sponsoring a summer workshop designed to explore the place of online instruction at Luther. Faculty are invited to meet from 9 a.m.-noon on June 18-19 with facilitators Deb Fordice, head of the Education department, and Lynn Nielsen, experienced online and face-to-face professor of undergraduate and graduate students in UNI's College of Education. Read and discuss works recommended for Paideia 111/112

Faculty are invited to read books that our Luther colleagues have recommended for the first-year Paideia program, and to discuss together which of the works are particularly suitable for the course. Participants will read two books each and then meet to discuss the readings on June 27-28. For more information and to sign up for this workshop go to http://lis.luther.edu/node/6816. Registration deadline is June 13.

The Bible: not for dummies

Religion 101: "Introduction to Biblical Studies" is required for all students at Luther, but how many faculty outside the religion department really know what this course entails? A two-day workshop, June 20-21, will give faculty a chance to be a Religion 101 student and see how one permutation of this course seeks to address critical thinking and its place in a liberal arts college of the church. For more information and to register go to http://lis.luther.edu/node/6812.

Sustainability tip

Buying green: Various soaps are made from natural ingredients such as vegetable oils and organic herbs and spices, but these cleansers are also manufactured without using any electricity. The employees at Real Goods literally pedal on bicycles to power the machines that mix the ingredients in soap vats. A gift box of five, 3.5 ounce soap bars in scents such as lemongrass-ginger and rosemary costs $10.50 at www.realgoods.com.

And finally…

June is international Surf Music Month. Thank you Beach Boys for leading the wave (pun completely intended) in this music craze.

"We'll all be plannin' out a route
We're gonna take real soon
We're waxin' down our surfboards
We can't wait for June
We'll all be gone for the summer
We're on safari to stay
Tell the teacher we're surfin'
Surfin' U.S.A."
